Burnout Paradise for PSN this week

Full game download from Thursday.

Criterion plans to offer Burnout Paradise as a PSN download from this Thursday.

The website update makes no mention of whether this will be for both the US and Europe, nor what the price will be here - although we know the US version will cost USD 30. And we're checking the other details.

Burnout Paradise on PSN will have access to all of the updates released for the game so far, including those lovely motorbikes.

The Criterion website has a full list changes to peruse, plus promises of Trophy support for "imminent" inclusion.

Criterion's not stopping there, but has many more plans for future content, including additional islands to explore.

Head over to our Burnout Paradise gamepage to find out more.

I wonder what the filesize will be?
  • DFawkes #2 3 years ago

I love Criterion. All this free extra stuff, and now an easy way to buy it without leaving the house. There is near no excuse for not having this, except the usual one of "Teh no restartz EPIC FAIL".
  • jonsaan #3 3 years ago

Great game but I still find it bloody hard to keep one eye on the map during a race. Learning the map is beyond me I fear.
  • Darren #4 3 years ago

Hmmm, kind of an interesting "experiment" but given that Burnout Paradise is eight months old now, if you want it you can buy the disc-based game for £25 or less if you shop around... and you can buy it NOW! The big advantage is, of course, that the disc-based version will use significantly less HDD space than the downloaded one as this is one of the few PS3 games that has NO HDD install (the two free expansions and patches do use up approx. 500 MB though). I really don't see the advantage of being able to download this game personally but I'm sure some people might... :?

@Darren. given the choice, I will always opt for downloads. I just find it more convenient and less likely to get destroyed by my youngest son:)
  • Darren #7 3 years ago

Well your son can always destroy your PS3, jonsaan! ;)
  • Ryze #8 3 years ago

Shame the map doesn't rotate, as this breaks many races.

I don't have time to learn the whole map before progressing in the game.
  • Kenshin001 #9 3 years ago

This and Wipeout HD at the same time. Yikes.
  • Darren #10 3 years ago

P.S. Why is it that when you edit a comment on here, it tags it with an "Edited by", which is fine but in a typeface that is BIGGER than the one used in the original post and in BOLD. How bloody stupid is that... it's terribly distracting? :?
  • KayJay #11 3 years ago

Ryze Wrote "Shame the map doesn't rotate, as this breaks many races."

This could not be truer... I have taken a million wrong turns because of this. Might this be an option in one of these updates. This would make it so much easier to fin your way around.
  • Widge #12 3 years ago

Ffs, I just grabbed this off someone for £15 second hand because of the lack of news, I would rather have on my hard drive...

    Agreed... looks terrible :)

    EDIT: TERRIBLE!

Yes the map/directions system is still a real pain and takes the arcadey fun out of events a bit. Half the time I just hang back behind the lead cars so I know where I'm supposed to be going. It's supposed to be a race, not GTA.
  • menage #17 3 years ago

    3.5 GB? Really?

    That's doable I think.
  • #18 3 years ago

im looking to sell my copy of Burnout if anyone is interested.
  • Arwin #19 3 years ago

I've been waiting for this! 39.99 euro copies have been staring at me seductively from the store racks but I've been able to resist them thinking I would prefer to have a PSN version of this game, especially now that I've upgraded my harddrive. If true and it's released this week together with Wipeout, then wow, a big week for PSN and for my wallet, because I'll definitely get both.

"It should be bigger and louder so you don't miss a turning (Which I do a lot LOL)"

ideally they should be on the turning, like in GTA IV.

I really don't see the advantage of being able to download this game personally but I'm sure some people might... :?
Well, EA have the advantage of you not being able to sell the game in the highstreet once you're finished with it. That one's quite a big downside for consumers.

Also for EA, with the game sitting on your harddrive you're more likely to purchase additional content for the gme when they begin charging for it.

An added benefit for EA is that you can't take a downloaded game around to play at your friend's house, so they would have to purchase a copy too.

Another benefit for EA is that they get a far higher proportion of the sale price than if they sell the game through shops.

For the consumer, there's the convenience of not having to walk over to your machine to swap disks, and don't forget that it also... Um... Wait, I think that's it...

It's not that I mind digital downloads when they are competitively priced, but when they cost about the same as you can get the game elsewhere then the restrictive downsides of the model are more annoying.
  • Darren #22 3 years ago

Ah yeah, forget about the advantage of not needing to put the disc in the drive to play the game if you download it. Still it's no real hardship as far as I'm concerned since my games collection is right next to my PS3 within easy reach. I'd rather save the HDD space for non-disc based games like... Wipeout HD! :D
  • kingus #23 3 years ago

I find the map not rotating actually helps me. I know I have to drive north-west to the wind farm - a quick glance at the mini-map shows me which direction I am travelling (easy to get disorientated, especially after a crash or a short-cut), and which road to take to go roughly the right direction. It is a bit hard to get used to at first though - but once I set the sat-nav in my real-life car to always orientate the top of the map north, I soon got used to it ;)

having been thinking about getting this or GRID (leaning towards the latter)- anyone care to offer their thoughts on which is the better?

If its reasonably priced i might opt for download anyways and buy GRID later.

  • pikemon #25 3 years ago

yeah, i struggle to learn the map too. nowadays i don't look at the mini-map at all, i just follow the green "road sign" advice on the top... but it's still super frustrating when you miss the turn or have to slow down to crawl in order to 100% not miss it. when things get really bad i press the "back" button to bring up the big map, which is kind of a downer in an arcade racer... (it would be much cooler to freeze action and ZOOM OUT to see what's around you, where the opponents are located and so on...) braid style rewinds could also work in 1p but... oh well, it's still an awesome game, and one that would be so much less frustrating if everybody had a photogenic level memory.
  • DFawkes #26 3 years ago

Well I'll offer mine. GRID is possibly the worst game I've ever played. Taking the advice of someone who hates GRID as much as me probbly isn't the best idea, but you did ask :) The handling is terrible (sluggish, twitchy and loose), which is the main reason I hate it. To be fair, the rest is fine.

I think Burnout Paradise is brilliant, and I still play it regularly, even if I don't want to race. The online is great and has Invite and Friends list support. Again, I'm totally biased but by Burnout.
  • Darren #27 3 years ago

Well personally I enjoyed Race Driver GRID far more than I did Burnout Paradise. I thought the latter was OK but didn't enjoy the open world structure... it doesn't suit the game... in fact, it works against the game as you have more time to notice that there are no people in the city... or drivers in the cars!!! Gives the game a weird, empty feel akin to the early PGR games on the Xbox.

I much preferred the simple, arcade structures of Burnout 2/3 (IMO, the series' best games) and GRID is more like this, which probably explains why I liked it more. Oh and the lack of a restart option was irritating too, although I know the diehard Burnout Paradise boys will probably slaughter me for saying that but it was a godsend to have such an option in GRID (plus you could rewind mistakes anyway). It makes the game ten times more enjoyable IMO.

I want this download version but two things stop me this week:

    1. I still need a bigger drive (my 8gb card and pandora battery for the new PSP came first this month!)
    2. Wipeout HD is my PSN purchase this week!
  • collateral89 #29 3 years ago

my comment count has just gone up 1 lol "and i agree?"
  • carrotcake #30 3 years ago

are you kidding? this, wipeout and mega man 9 this week. not gonna be short of things to play...
  • septimus #31 3 years ago

Going to be a big download day on Thursday with this and WipeoutHD.
  • ChuckNorris #32 3 years ago

  • rufus_the_stunt_bum #33 3 years ago

GRID I think it is - just read the review, though will get burnout anyways - saw it in asda for £24.95 on the weekend.
  • Beano #34 3 years ago

"Going to be a big download day on Thursday with this and WipeoutHD. "

And Mega Man 9... in the US at least ;)
  • Widge #35 3 years ago

I like the utter freedom of Burnout myself... I see it like outrun but with depth. Plus the support for the game is fantastic.

GRiD, well I prefer DiRT because I like it offroad, its more fun... the demo of GRiD was atrocious and really put me off it. Thats the crux of Burnout for me, more fun than GRiD.

Oh and I got bored of Burnout's linear approach in the past. I think learning a city and your own best routes round it give the races and map some real character.

"And Mega Man 9... in the US at least ;)"

    ...and the UK.
  • Beano #37 3 years ago

    Really?... sure?

    I hope so ;)
  • Beano #38 3 years ago

I got tired of GRID very fast and it was very fristrating to me :(

But Burnout Paradise was a positive surprise to me and have played it a lot.
It's not perfect - the HUD + map could be better and some sort of POI or pointer to get back to failed events, would have been nice. But overall a very enjoyable game and the lack of retry is actually a good thing IMO.
Hopefully BO6 will also be free-roaming but improved and enhanced.
  • eepic #39 3 years ago

wtf are you faggets still doing on PSN?

GEARS OF WAR 2 IS APPROACHING
  • chronom4n #40 3 years ago

actually for me the game and it's open-world structure has been a revelation as it gives me time to get to grips with the world. I mean tonight i was just cruising around in one of the old skool american cars and listening to some chilled out tunes. Makes for a perfect chilled out session and then when I am ready to do some hardcore racing I know that I will have to make this turn or that turn. I have one question to anyone out there who plays with any of the logitech wheels. How does playing with the wheel feel? because having played revenge on PS2 with the wheel it was awesome because of the sheer feedback. I would love to it if someone told me.BTW if you haven't guessed it yet.... I am playing on a 360.
  • Arwin #41 3 years ago

I haven't tried it on 360 and the MS Wheel yet, but playing the demo with the Logitech DF Pro was a bit meh. It's ok, but nothing spectacular (as for instance GT5 Prologue, which is incredible with the wheel). I think I prefer playing Burnout with the controller (dualshock support is nice though)
  • chronom4n #42 3 years ago

@ Arwin, I expect nothing less than phenomenal for GT5p on PS3. That I do not have to worry about but BP, i am fairly positive in thinking that they have tweaked the wheel support and it was really something else IMO on PS2 for revenge. Just wondering if it is worth inversting into getting a PS3 just for the games that suppot logitechs wheels.?

Anyone got the retroactive trophies to work? I've downloaded the trophy patch, I've previously achieved most of the trophies... but nothing happened... I'm getting the sinking feeling that Criterion may have spoken too soon about the trophies being retroactive and "due to technical issues we unfortunately etc etc"
  • Zebula77 #44 3 years ago

Yup. They're NOT retroactive. So it's repeat-time for all of us Trophy-hungry players. No need to delete your savegame, tho. Just create another user (if you haven't already).
