Burnout Paradise "Cagney" patch dated News

Xbox 360 PlayStation 3 News by Robert Purchese

9 June, 2008

Criterion has wheeled out a 10th July date for its upcoming "Cagney" patch for Burnout Paradise.

Inside it are three fresh modes: Road Rage, where four of you race through checkpoints while four others try to stop you; Stunt Run, where you do tricks at the same time to rack up points; and Marked Man, where you all gang up on one person to take them down before they can complete the course.

On top of this are 70 more Freeburn challenges to get stuck into, a Hunter Olympus and secret Criterion car, fresh liveries, custom soundtrack support on PS3, and a host of bug-fixes asked for by you lot.

Head over to the official Criterion site for a full list of those.

"Cagney" is the second meaty update for Burnout Paradise, and will be followed by "Davis" and its motorbikes in August, then "Eastwood" and its island this autumn.

Head over to our Burnout Paradise gamepage for our review and all the pictures and videos to date.

Looking forward to the custom soundtrack support in the PS3 version as I found most of the music included with the game dreadful and there's a distinct lack of electronic/techno/ambient stuff! :)

Seeing as this is a patch, I presume it is *FREE*?

Criterion Games Announces Date for Cagney Software Update

Today, we're able to finally unveil the release date for the Cagney software update!

This is our 3rd and most ambitious software update yet! It will be available for free at 09:00am UK time on Thursday 10th July '08.

If you've missed the stories we've run so far, you can hit the Cagney tab at the top of this page and see all our Cagney blog entries in one place or check out the following summary of features:

3 New Freeburn Game Modes:

• Road Rage
8-player team event. One team must race through a series of Paradise City checkpoints. The other team must stop them.
Cue incredible chases and battling through the city, tons of voice communication as players co-ordinate their efforts.

• Stunt Run (vs)

Pull stunts to score points - hit barriers, billboards and ramps; ace barrel rolls, flat spins and massive airtime to score big. Everybody competes to simultaneously - hit your rivals to kill their scores and gain multipliers.

• Marked Man

A player is selected at random and everyone gangs up to take them down. The Marked Man scores for reaching the end point intact and taking anyone down along the way.

70 New Freeburn Challenges
• 70 new timed multi-part Freeburn Challenges
• Leaderboards for these challenges that log your best time (as well as those people who did it with you)

Vehicles
• Hunter Olympus
• A secret Criterion Car!

New liveries
• Rossolini Tempesta Dream
• Two fan-created liveries – the Oval Steel Racer and Inferno Hippie Van
• A secret Criterion livery!

Ranked Race Changes
• Too much to report in this blog entry but click here for the full breakdown!

Custom Soundtracks
• Custom Soundtrack support on PS3

Other high-priority fixes and updates

• If you're in a 3 or more player challenge and a player drops out, the remaining players can still complete it (subject to it being a challenge that can handle this!)
• "Previously" section on the search games list now displays Challenges, Today's Best and Freeburn game modes, making it loads easier to decide which game you want to join
• You can now view Leaderboards and Options in an online game
• You can now mute other online players in the show players screen
• You can now mute yourself if you have a PS3 Eye/Eye toy
• We've increased time-out for online races, and if all players complete the races within the timer, then you go straight to results
• The Airfield has been changed to help with the drivability of the area and make it a little easier to complete the hoop challenges
• Online cars now show damage - roll up to the start in a half-destroyed Hunter Cavalry and everyone else will see it!
• Added an stronger display message if you rule all of Todays Best
• The Easy Drive menu & Challenges page now loops from top to bottom
• Fixed the navigation system so that it takes into account the next check point in a race
• Fixed traffic not reappearing in Freeburn after a no-traffic race
• Fixed online races using Lawrence Road – it's been reporting finish distances with a little inaccuracy
• Revised 30+ car resets following crashes
• All new sound effects added for Easy Drive
• Driving backwards in Road Rage now ends the event as it does in Marked Man
• Option to invert camera axis for the look around camera on right stick
• Online player information made accurate on the instance a player goes through a checkpoint in races
• If you set VOIP mix to zero it is now saved correctly
• 1080i support for "almost HD" sets
• Improved the Standard Definition rendering on PS3
• New highlight to show the player in Today's Best
• Easy Drive fades out if it's unused for 20 seconds
• Boost chaining no longer possible by drifting in open areas

This game is a real slow burner, has turned from an initial disappointment into my favorite PS3 game. The driving is so much more fun than the idiotic floaty car physics in GTA IV.

I can't wait for the motorcycle stuff that they have planned for August.

I actually found Paradise to be the weakest Burnout since the original and I'm hoping that these "patches" improve on what is otherwise a fine but wholly unremarkable entry to the series. Night time racing, a new island and bikes will at least add some more needed variety to the game, shame we have to wait so long for them.

Blimey, it is only a month away.

Really looking forward to rounding up the EG Usual Suspects for some rounds of the new modes over Live. Only the release of GTA IV prevented our regular Friday night outings in Paradise City, and I think that even I might be able to forsake Liberty City for one night a week by then.

Hitting your rivals to cancel their Stunt scores sounds great - provided the takedown calculations have been redone properly, however I am a bit disappointed that they have changed the Airfield to make the hoop challenges 'easier'. Why call them challenges if they aren't challenging? Great news that your car damage will now be seen by t'other players.

cool.

Horses for courses I suppose. I found the soundtrack to be probably the best I've come across in a game (licensed music) to date! :):):)

@vercetti

Adam and the Ants, Faith No More, Depeche Mode, Jane's Addiction, Junkie XL, Soundgarden, Jimmy Eat World, N.E.R.D?!

To name but a few. There are a good mix of styles and the orignal burnout music is in there too.

Perhaps it's your taste in music that is shit no?

"• Option to invert camera axis for the look around camera on right stick "

\o/

Now, I'm one step closer to having a finished game.

Waiting for:

- rotating mini-map
- 'restart race' option
- some method of going directly to previous events and locations already discovered.
- perhaps a big Midnight Club style arrow so I don't keep hitting corners without a rotating minimap to get my bearings.

This is why Blu-Rays aren't needed for games yet - these games aren't even finished when they're released!

/waits...

/plays GTA IV in the meantime...

I loaded this for the first time since April tonight. I don't remember the first patch downloading!? Maybe it wasn't too obvious where the improvements were...
