Burnout gets official title

Next-gen outing is Paradise.

Electronic Arts has unveiled the title of the fifth game in the Burnout series. It'll be called Burnout Paradise, and is due out on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 this winter.

Naturally it's developer Criterion's first offering for PS3, and promises a free-roaming experience built from scratch for the new technology. This will give us the most detailed damage engine we've seen, and more polygons than you can possibly count up to.

"We have been working towards Burnout Paradise for quite some time," said Pete Hawley, executive producer for the game. "Next generation consoles have opened up a raft of new gameplay opportunities and the Criterion team has leapt at the chance to innovate and raise the bar to an all-new high."

"There are going to be some big surprises and a lot of new features but the core of the game is still pure Burnout. Instant accessibility will be reinforced by innovative online capabilities which will see Burnout Paradise smash racing conventions."

    Want.

    Missing some links above, methinks.
  • kangarootoo #2 5 years ago

Less gimmics and "tokens" and more racing and I'll be pleased.

A Burnout 2/3 experience with the free roaming of NFS:MW and my money shall be yours.
  • jonsaan #3 5 years ago

I still think the first one was the best.
  • ccfb #4 5 years ago

I'm with jonsaan. First = best.
  • rodpad #5 5 years ago

Burnout 2 was the best by far. Anyone who thinks otherwise is a muppet :)
  • TriggerHippie #6 5 years ago

The final "Aargh my eyes are bleeding but I can't blink" race of the original Burnout was awsome. White knuckle races and no traffic checking and I'm in!
  • coojam #7 5 years ago

mmm, how much I would love a free roaming burnout that takes a leaf out of Test Drive's book...random massively multiplayer crashiness
  • Santino #8 5 years ago

kinda bored of Burnout its almost a yearly thing now, however if they make it more like the second one in terms of actually having to use some skill instead of only reflexes i may give it a look.

Let's just hope you can get through this game by not simply holding down accelerate and using the walls to steer you round the course.

And whilst I'm here, let me just say I'm bored of people talking about "raising the bar" and "setting new bars" the whole time.

    That is all.

Really bored of this franchise now - it really seems like a reheating year after year. And the takedowns on Revenge on 360 felt weak and based on luck rather than skill :-( Burnout 3 FTW!

In fact, crack on with Black 2 instead.

I bought the original Burn Out a few weeks ago for the Gamecube as I had the same opinion about that version being the best.

    Boy was I wrong!

Boring and repetitive crashes, no real feeling of proper destruction when crashing, slow cars, shoddy graphics and no explosions.

Believe me, the second Burnout is easily the best. A real overhaul and a massive improvement over the original.

It's funny how those rose tinted spectacles can sometimes work. :)

    Just thought I'd mention this.

I always remember with Burnout 3 Takedown that there was a part that used to really spook me.

When you crashed your car, if you slowed down time to steer your car into more oncoming traffic, occasionally you would hear this woman screaming as if she was seeing the crash. It really used to freak me out when I heard this, it just sounded so haunting.

    All hail burnout 2!
    And its guitar riffs!

(I post the same stuff every single time burnout news hits...It's just that good!)
  • Rushy #14 5 years ago

A burnout trailer with no crashes. Not really burnout is it.

Lets hope the next trailer actually shows us something other than a few cars in a city.
  • macksed #15 5 years ago

B3 takedown > all other burnouts
  • WriterUK #16 5 years ago

    @AcidSnake

Between B2 and B3 EA bought Criterion... and out went the funktastic soundtrack, in came EA Generic Rock Trax. A crying shame.

With you all the way! Bring back Burnout's original soundtrack for the next-gen version I say....

Burnout 2 was superb, Revenge had great level design and innovations but the taketown business there is just too easy/random and crash mode wasn't exciting anymore. Also the menu system sucked and there were bunch of smaller irritiating details about it.

I'm excited to hear about focus being put to the online multiplayer mode, because there is obviously an enermous potential for fun there.

I'm kinda waiting for the ultimate Burnout that would combine all the great aspects of the series in one and nail the multiplayer too.

    Meanwhile I play ExciteTruck.

I'd forgotten about the scaling music of BO2 (before the McFly inspired "hits" of BO3 came along).

    Awesome stuff.

I think we should all meet in the park after school for a big fight. BO1 fans on one side and BO2 fans on the toher (good luck macksed, I think you are on your own. I would bring a really pointy stick if I were you).
  • AOFanboi #19 5 years ago

I hope it has "older Burnout saves unlocking" like Revenge - I didn't like the lack of that feature in Dominator, which did nada for my B1-4 saves. Doubtful though since it shifts platform.
  • Scientist #20 5 years ago

Burnout 2, Palm Bay Marina, time attack, 45 continuous burnouts. Gaming heaven!
  • peterfll #21 5 years ago

I love being controversial by saying that I've loved each Burnout game more than the previous, ending with Burnout: Revenge on the 360 as my favourite of all!
  • OnlyMe #22 5 years ago

Burnout 1 and 2 were the best, Burnout 3 put less emphasize on racing and more on impressive crash effects. Revenge brought it way over the top and the series have all left the whole point of Burnout 1. Not tried Dominator. But I'm still anxious to try Paradise.
  • Penguinzoot #23 5 years ago

I realise it's not really in favour and all that, but I, um, quite liked Revenge.

Burnout 2 was the best by far. Anyone who thinks otherwise is a muppet :)

    Signed.

God was I disappointed with Revenge on the 360. Except the name everything that Burnout is for me was gone. I knew all the Burnout 2 Tracks by heart and boy was it a joy to drive on the wrong lane for a whole 3 races with burnout after burnout without a single pause. Felt so good. And the music was awesome.

Curious about this title then. More Burnout 2 style and I'm sold.

Just like to know if Street Fighter Alpha Anthology for PS2 works well on PS3 ? Cheers.
  • clockworkzombie #26 5 years ago

    I too liked revenge.

    Bring back replays
    Bring back Burnout chains
    Remove traffic checking

    Kthxbye!1

    Keep everything else.

Burnout 2 is by far the best *racer* of the series.
  • kangarootoo #29 5 years ago

Now is the time to reclaim the crown.

Loved NFS:MW, but thought NFS:Carbon sucked.

So the way is clear for BO to move back to pole position (ooh ooh I made a racing "joke";).
  • nick_f Verified Senior Producer, Microsoft #30 5 years ago

    Let me see...

    - return of Boost Chains
    - no Traffic Checking
    - focus on racing, not crashing

Hmmm. Have you lot even read the Dominator reviews?
  • makaveli789 #31 5 years ago

Also, more focus on the guitar riffs. This defines the essence of Burnout for me as well as all the other die hard fans!
