Bungie making new Halo title

Microsoft's Don Mattrick says so.

Xbox 360 boss Don Mattrick has confirmed that Bungie is making a new Halo game.

Speaking in an interview with MTV Multiplayer, Mattrick explained it was held back from the Microsoft E3 conference because the briefing was already "loaded" with content.

He went on to promise that announcements are planned for the Bungie project and Halo Wars - another notable absentee from the conference.

Mattrick also revealed that this Bungie title was in no way related to the mysterious Peter Jackson project we've still heard nothing about.

Perhaps everyone is waiting for the Leipzig Games Convention.

Well, that's the countdown on bungie.net ruined. Pfah.
  • miiiguel #2 4 years ago

that was the countdown.... It is stopped and now shows a letter a bit pissed with the publisher (read MS).

The countdown was cancelled anyway apparently, Bungie.net had a note up over the splash page earlier on today =/

Edit: Must learnt to type faster.

Perhaps this means Master Chief is going multi format *throws fuel onto flame war fire*

Bungie are disappointed that their publisher forced them to pull today's announcement plans, according to a story on 1up; given the way that they try to be as upfront with fans as possible. There had been a webcam teaser running, but when the apology was posted, one of the Bungie guys knocked all of the figures in front of the camera over.
  • Eighthours #6 4 years ago

    Rubbishness.

Presumably MS realised they'd won E3 by default by not being beyond rubbish, and saw no strategic value in the extra announcement.

    lavalant: Fuck off.
  • seasidebaz #8 4 years ago

So..... Bungie come out and say they DEFINATELY aren't working on a Halo game.

Then Microsoft tell them they are, and cancel whatever project Bungie really were working on.

Then Bungie get pissy and take down their website.

Great turn of events there :)
  • MORZTAN #9 4 years ago

I have never seen anything like this before....

My god, MS must be the biggest asses to work for in the entire industry.

Like the fact that he states that bungies employees also are disappointed.

EDIT: I'm referring to bungies homepage

This is Halo Blue right, which was reported on other websites a few days ago?
  • gingerlink #11 4 years ago

I feel really sorry for bungie about this, some publishers really can be morons...*note letter on their site*

and even if you think the game was rubbish, bungie have a huge community and it's nice for them to add a bit of excitement to the proceedings, as there's been very little of that this E3. No games that were both exciting and new. I'm looking forward to getting animal crossing and wii music for example, but they're not "exciting" per say...
  • miiiguel #12 4 years ago

I kinda agree the "publisher" noticed it won E3 (just read the *internet*), and decided to keep this one to Leipzig.

lol I thought Bungie were free...clearly not. Tools.
  • mkreku #17 4 years ago

I don't understand.. What is the problem? Are Bungie pissed because they weren't allowed to announce anything this E3? Or are they pissed because Microsoft revealed another Halo (gee, big surprise there!) before their countdown was finished?
  • Dr.Haggard #18 4 years ago

@seasidebaz: I think you misunderstood, er... everything.

@Lavalant: Bungie didn't take down the web site you numpty. Oh, and you liked Brute Force?
  • Rash' #19 4 years ago

More Halo??? How many Halo games have they got coming now? Is there really a need for another Halo?
  • Lebowski #20 4 years ago

This is the bigger f**k up than the time Captain Hook had a go on Guitar Hero.

I'd imagine they're pretty upset about both. They were building up to revealing their new game today and then Microsoft told them they couldn't announce it yet, but then Don Mattrick blurted out in an interview that it's a new Halo game. Nice work.

It's a bit disappointing really, Bungie need to do something else. Hopefully they're working on more than one new game.

Multiformat? Please don't bother. The Halo 3 campaign was really dull and had abysmal buddy AI. Yes, the co-op was decent enough, but even the Conflict games were alright in co-op - it's not really much of a defence. I'm happy enough without Halo on PS3.
  • muscleblade #23 4 years ago

This is definently not Halo 4 anyway. Its probably set in the Halo universe but in a different time. Maybe from the time when the covenant first attacked.
  • spekkeh #24 4 years ago

Poor Bungie. I believe this was the third time they said they would absolutely not do a Halo again. But Microsoft needs money from its success series more than good relations with its dev I guess.

It seems very odd to me that Microsoft would want to dampen publicity for a forthcoming Halo game at E3. It's not like Nintendo or Sony are worried about promoting games that won't be out for 18 months or more.

Unless they're trying to step away from being known as the 'halo machine' in their attempts to chase the Singstar/Eyetoy demographic.

Still, at least we know they're still making it.
  • WinterSnowblind #26 4 years ago

Microsoft own Halo, and they essentially still own Bungie. It's not going multiplatform, and even if they're working on a title that isn't Halo.. it's not going multiplatform.

But this seems pretty smart, from a PR perspective. Microsoft clearly "won" E3, they don't need a Halo announcement right now, they're going to save it, incase.. Nintendo announce a game? I love the Halo haters though, because it's always clear when someone has never played the game and/or knows next to nothing about the series :)

I still don't really understand the amount of hate Halo recieves. I mean, there are plenty of popular games that I dislike, but I don't feel the need to rage on about my "hatred" of them. Maybe that's because I'm smart enough to tell the difference between a bad game, and something that I just personally don't like. Or does it all just come down to jealously?

    Either way, it's pretty petty.
  • Widge #27 4 years ago

I've played the Halo games, I think people's main grief is that at one point it was a shining unique example on a console format... nowadays its not so unique or shiny, but revered as somewhat as a pinnacle still.

If there is a direct sequel going on, wonder if we'll be seeing experience, skills, unlockables and perks in it?

COD4 is certainly the benchmark in FPS at the moment, and yet to be bettered.
  • Darren #28 4 years ago

I'm looking forward to Halo Wars but I don't think I could stomach another FPS sequel, particularly as I thought Halo 3 was a little disappointing not to mention samey. I'd rather Bungie was working on something totally new now they've severed ties with Microsoft.
  • Lebowski #29 4 years ago

I do have to agree about the BS that Bungie seem to have about them. I love their games, but the constant "we've got a secret / we've got a new map / armour you can't have tee-hee" BS is really starting to grate.

Either show something or just don't mention it, done with.

    Halo: Rage Wars

    Halo Tourney 2009

    Return to Castle Halostein
  • Britesparc Verified Creative, ITV #31 4 years ago

Yeah, but there are an awful lot of die-hard Bungie fans who DO get excited and all tied up in the hype. They enjoy, they like the teasing, and they consider themselves part of Bungie's fan group. Personally, I quite like a bit of a tease, but I can't be arsed to do any viral stuff (even for something genuinely cool, like The Dark Knight).

I don't understand why people get pissed off at something directed more to dedicated fans than the general public... I mean, eventually it'll be released, so why not just wait till then?
  • WiseNail #32 4 years ago

MS is probably confident that Gears 2 is outshining Resistance 2 without the need for additional help. Therefore, the Halo announcement is being held back to sabotage the hype around Killzone 2 at some future time.

Of course it also stops a new Halo game taking focus away from Gears 2...
  • Yossarian #33 4 years ago

"If there is a direct sequel going on, wonder if we'll be seeing experience, skills, unlockables and perks in it?"

God I would throw up in my mouth a little. CoD4 is not the benchmark for everyone, quite the opposite.

There is nothing yet to indicate this game will be a FPS in any case. In fact, because Bungie are now a multiproject studio, there is nothing concrete to indicate that this announcement would even have been Halo-related.

I am pretty sure Eighthours/miiiguel are correct about this one: Microsoft evaluated how they stood up against the competition, realized they already had the biggest announcement, and decided they needed no hammer blow and that it would be best saved for another occasion.

Also, to the conspiracy theorists: Microsoft own Halo, not Bungie. Multiplatform is not a possibility.

  • wingzerosys #34 4 years ago

Here's hoping its a squad based shooter set on Reach.

    Fall of Reach anyone?
  • louyfitz #35 4 years ago

Killzone 2 looks OK, resistance was shit, two might be better. But then again who buys a PS3 for FPS games?

So I'm guessing this is another exclusive, I'm sticking to my theory that it's a thrid person game set in the halo universe.

of course this could all be bullshit and it's nothing to do with Halo.
