Bungie makes first noises about new game News

PC Xbox 360 PlayStation 3
News by Robert Purchese

6 February, 2008

Bungie has said its next project will be something "totally different" to what you might expect.

The first mention of the studio's post-Microsoft game was made in the Bungie podcast, where Frank O'Connor, Luke Smith, Brian Gerrard and newcomer Christian Allen had a chat.

"We can say that Bungie's next game - that isn't Halo 3 expansion and DLC-type stuff - will be something totally different from Bungie," said the voice of either Luke Smith or Brian Gerrard. We got lost. Definitely not O'Connor because he sounds a bit like Christopher Walken, and Christian Allen introduced himself at the beginning so we remembered his sound.

"It's far, far too early in its state to even say more than that at this point, but eventually I'm sure we'll have a lot of cool things to start talking about. I can just say that some of the stuff I've seen is pretty cool."

Bungie and Microsoft went their own ways shortly after the release of Halo 3, as the developer was keen to return to its independent roots.

Bungie made a name for itself with its Marathon series of first-person shooters, but dabbled in everything from dungeon-crawling to strategy before unleashing Halo.

I'd settle for a role-playing game, but then I would. What would you like to see, Eurogamer readers?

Your witty comment's power was all sucked out by that typo. Way to go.

I'd like a strategy game or RPG myself.

An RPG-FPS would be most welcome.

And it's about time. They should have moved on to something different after the first Halo.

I have a feeling in my water it will be some sort of driving game. Don't know why; perhaps because of the increased emphasis on vehicles throughout the Halos.

How about a game viewed as though from the eyes of the protagonist, wherein you wield weapons capable of expelling projectiles at great quickness using some kind of "devil's powder"?

A turn-based, hard sci-fi, cyberpunk rpg with music by Vangelis. Something that contains a ridiculous level of detail and complexity, tackles issues from conceptions of identity to the psychology of captialism and is so unbearably bleak and unremitting that half of the 6 people who buy it kill themselves afterwards. Co-op play would be nice.

They also massively increased their working force after H3 and H3 is by all means an open ending (and they already said that it wouldn't be the last halo game). MS and bungie are companies. They have but one ultimate goal. To make money. Halo makes them lots of money. What do you think that the chances are of them doing two games at once?

Openworld, drive-about, hack and slash, CRACKDOWN meets BURNOUT:PARADISE with a bit of DMC/NINJA GAIDEN button-bashery, plus the option to grow your own garden VIVA PINATA style. With mini games. And a wiggly remote...
Plus online of course.
And biscuits.

That should cover most bases for the games buying public...

And the main character can be named after me!

A return to the Myth universe for me, which I know is not 'totally different' but the strategy requirements seem simple enough to easily translate to console controllers. Maybe in a Viking-style - whereby you control a central character but can order the peons about.

/just wants to see pyromaniac dwarves again...

Or anything steampunk; action-RPG (thinking Mass Effect type of controls, etc) would be awesome - can just imagine how awe-inspiring a fully realised steampunk Victorian world would be, when handled by Bungie (whatever arguments you can level at Halo 1/2/3, the world was very complete and well-thought out). Or a good old point and click adventure - still steampunk mind.
