Braid for PS3 is a possibility - Blow News

PlayStation 3 PC Wii News by Tom Bramwell

12 August, 2008

Braid might be released for PlayStation 3 in the future, but the PC version is developer Jonathan Blow's primary focus following the game's triumphant, 10/10-winning debut on Xbox Live Arcade.

"It's a limited exclusive, so if I were to try to make a PS3 or WiiWare version of the game, I would have to wait a little bit," Blow said on the Game Focus podcast.

"PlayStation 3 might happen in the future. What's going to definitely happen this year is a PC release. The only reason that's not out right now is that I wanted to focus on one platform at a time," he said, insisting that he wants to produce a "high quality" version for PC owners.

As for other formats, Blow ruled out the possibility of a WiiWare release. "WiiWare is not going to happen for this game because the model is just not right - like, Braid is too big of a game to be downloadable on WiiWare and stored on someone's Wii," he said.

"A lot of people think, oh, 3D is really complicated and is big, but 2D art - like all the bitmaps in Braid - takes a lot of space. The game is 144MB right now."

Elsewhere, Blow wrote on a Gamasutra comments thread that he has no plans to make Braid 2. "I'm not going to do a sequel to Braid - I don't care how many copies it sells," he wrote.

"I mean, maybe in five years when I'm motivated, if I have a really fresh idea for it. But I'm not waiting in the wings with a level pack, or DLC or anything."

Braid is out now on Xbox Live Arcade for 1200 Microsoft Points (GBP 10.20 / EUR 14.40). It's a time-shifting platform puzzler with some of the most ingenious level construction we can remember, and turns out to be rather poignant as well.

Check out our review to find out why we love it so. Have you got 60 puzzle pieces yet?

There you go. No need to be so negative towards Braid anymore is it now that you actually might have it on your beloved PS3.

Aaand suddenly it's a great game, the review is entirely justified and it's another reason to get a PS3.

Did I miss the fleet of PS3 owners saying the game sucked? I saw a few 360 people who were nonplussed but the Braid thread remained mainly sane bar moanage about Dan's reviewing style.

I seem to remember I waded in saying on spec it looks like nothing special visually but the write ups have made the game sound very interesting.

I enjoyed Braid, didn't think I would, but I did.

One thing I'm not so sure about though, why is it poignant? I mean I understand why someone would say that about it, but surely it depends on the person playing it?

It became clear to me in a very short amount of time that the person who wrote this game, Blow, had obviously experienced most of the things he was writing about in his 'tombs' in the game. But his opinions are just that, opinions, everyone should have their own opinions, views and ideas. Just because someone decides to put them on show for the world to see doesn't make them right.

But anyway, like I said, good game, interesting, I enjoyed it, and thats the main thing isn't it?

That's kind of what art does, though. It's just unusual to see something so personal turned into a game.

Yep, I couldn't agree more, although Art is subjective, one persons Art is another mans trash. It was certainly a bold move to reveal so much about himself, that I can not argue with, and for that he should be applauded, I just hope people appreciate it.

Shame, would have been nice if he could chuck us a few levels as DLC for supporting it and buying the game.

Although, on the other hand, he could just be a very imaginative writer.....and not have experienced any of it, either way, very well done.

Well it works on multiple levels anyway, without getting into spoilers a lot of it is very obviously on more of a global/historical scale than a personal one, hence it's certainly not all personal to Blow.

For all the 1200 point bitching and the "oh you dont get pixel junk eden it is art" after finishing the game yesterday i cant help but feel Braid has much more depth to it than about 99% of games released. With all the final fantasies and gta's and their oh so complex storytelling I have never seen the level of debate over the story and themes featured in the ending of the game like i have with this game. Braid is a true work of art even ebert and his types would struggle to defend their views when braid is concerned.

brief playtime yes, but youll remember it forever

....unless yknow you just like shooting stuff and in that case its an overpriced piece of shit.

EDIT! to person above... the worldwide ideas can be interpreted in a metaphorical way , i dont think theres a definitive answer, not until blow decides to definitively state one anyways

I would like them to port it, yes.

And hopefully they'll also add more levels and allow all versions to upgradeable as well. The main complaint I've read around here is that it was a bit on the short side.

For the price its not short at all unless you use a guide wich surely ruin the whole experience. This game demand patience from the gamer. The solution is always closer than you might think. Play it correctly and it will last you a good few fantastic hours.

I'm not really concerned about length, as long as a game is the right length then thats ok. I don't want things drawn out just so it can boast gameplay hours.

I remember doing MGS1 in the weekend I bought it... but still wouldn't want it lengthened for the sake of it.

no WAY should there be a sequel to this, let alone DLC..

Mr Blow ( hehe that sounds funny ) should move on and leave this little jewel to become a blip of greatness in the history of the pixel.

Ok I'm going to take back my emo wankfest comment a little as I've dug a bit deeper around the story and there is a lot more meaningful stuff hidden behind what starts as an emo wankfest. The trouble then for me is that the true meaning is hidden to most but the hardened gamers and disguised at first as an emo wankfest :).

This has severe spoilers.

Brillant! A win for all concerned. No need to wait for MS to sort out the hardware issue to get this game now! In fact by the time they've sort them out this'll be on PS3. Can't wait for this game.

Hold your horses, mate!

It's not even certain the game will be out on the PSN this year, if at all... It all depends on long the time limited exclusivity lasts, and on whether the author will still be interested in milking the game a bit more in the future...
