Boom Blox sequel due this spring News

Wii News by Oli Welsh

29 January, 2009

The Hollywood Reporter brings the welcome news that last year's best Wii game (unless you count Okami), EA's action-puzzler Boom Blox, will get a sequel as soon as spring this year.

Boom Blox Bash Party will offer Wii owners "increased multiplayer action and more than 400 new levels that take players from underwater into outer space", according to the report. It will also offer online multiplayer, and additional levels available as downloadable content - for a fee, naturally.

Movie mogul Steven Spielberg is still attaching his name to the project, and to frothy quotes for press releases.

"Boom Blox Bash Party is a wild social gaming experience," he said. "We know families and friends really enjoyed playing the original Boom Blox together, so we designed more explosive multiplayer experiences with Boom Blox Bash Party."

The widely overlooked Boom Blox is a physical puzzle game that involves chucking balls at 3D arrangements of blocks until they fall over or blow up - or teasing them out in an elaborate reworking of Jenga.

It was one of our favourite games of last year, earning a rare 9/10 from Ellie and a spot in 2008's top 20. You still haven't bought it, have you? Shame on you.

A much overlooked game. And you know a game is good if my wife is willing so waste a few hours playing it.
The only bad thing about it is that I now associate it with very sore arms and shoulders which is probably why I now don't play it as often as I should.

Damn, I only bought this a couple of weeks ago and only expect to play it every so often when I'm with friends - could have waited for the sequel and got online multiplayer! Still, the local multiplayer is really fun, and I'm usually in the "my Wii just gathers dust" camp.

Boom blox is simply fantastic. My favourite Wii game by a country mile.

Concentrating on multiplayer is good too - they need to release it at a sensible RRP though.

Don't know if I will buy this. Got Boom Blox for Christmas 2008 and only 25% of the way through single player. Don't expect to finish it anytime soon either. I enjoy it a lot but I am playing other games at the moment.

It will depend on if there is a single player and if the online multiplayer is any good. I don't have anyone to play multiplayer with.

"I don't have anyone to play multiplayer with."

This is where Boom Blox shines, IMO. There are some superb competitive multiplayer modes, and a hell of a lot of really good co-op modes too.

One thing I really want for the sequel is the ability to create a multiplayer 'playlist' and save it. The 'competitive sample' mode is good, but picks too many Jenga gametypes for my liking.

I wonder if the sequel will support MotionPlus?

I bought it. Didn't play it very much. Same as every other game I own on the Wii that's incredible. Just don't turn it on more than once every 4 months, it seems. :(

I've been tempted to get this for ages, but my Wii has been sat in a cupboard gathering dust for the last 6 months.

I loved the controls on the original...just a shame they have yet to be transposed to other genre's. My major dislike was the awful art/presentaion of the game....and I doubt that will change sadly.

I don't think the new one will have online multiplayer, but I'm happy to be corrected.

Best news is that online level swapping will be facilitated by the web a la Blast Works, so no more need to swap Wii codes to message levels to people which should really open things up. In fact I'm inspired to have another go at creating some custom levels after seeing some groovy 8-bit sprite creations on YouTube!
