Bonk to return on XBLA, PSN and WiiWare

Vintage platform game series gets new entry.

Hudson has announced that it's reviving its vintage 2D platform game series, Bonk, with a downloadable game for Xbox Live Arcade, PlayStation Network and WiiWare. Bonk: Brink of Extinction is an all-new game due for release in early 2010.

Brink of Extinction will blend the retro side-scrolling gameplay of the 1990 NES and TurboGrafx favourite Bonk's Adventure with contemporary graphics, downloadable content and an online co-op mode.

Big-headed caveman baby Bonk needs to save the world from a comet on a collision course with Earth in his new outing. He embarks on a journey to the centre of the planet, and will be able to morph into no less than eight different forms this time.

Bonk's Adventure, Bonk's Revenge and Bonk 3: Bonk's Big Adventure have all seen re-releases on the Wii's Virtual Console service in the last couple of years, but Brink of Extinction will be the first new Bonk game for home consoles in a decade and a half.

Might be quite good but I think that series needs to have a few new tricks up it's sleeve to make an impact, that whole headbutting thing is a bit dated. We'll see though.

I think I had a game called Bonk on my Commodore 64!

First thing to come to my head was 'Why don't ya say that to my face tough guy?'

Oh man, updated graphics? The old games look fine - clean, crisp 2D cartoony fun.

I loved these on PC Engine.....yea that's right I had the super Engine (big grey thing that ran super ghouls and ghosts at near arcade perfection). Cost me a bloody fortune back then too. The days when you imported, swapped video transformers etc. etc and got it to work on a pal tv with style.

This is very good news, hopefully they don't mess with the graphics too much, like the old style!

They did a remake (of the first game?) for Gamecube & PS2 a few years back: Hudson Selection Vol. 3: PC Genjin. It wasn't released outside Japan of course. If I'm not mistaken the remake was all polygons, not a sprite in sight :) The only review I read, on Insert Credit, claimed it was really good.

Edit: Play-asia has pictures and it looks like the backgrounds are at least part sprites.

'Contemporary graphics', there's a phrase to send shivers down your spine.
