Blur on track for 28th May launch

"Single-player never ends," claims Bizarre.

Bizarre Creations' all-new racing experience, Blur, has been confirmed for a 28th May UK release, three days after the game hits in the US.

That puts the action racer, delayed last September, on a collision course with Black Rock's Split/Second, which hits on 21st May.

The Project Gotham Racing creator revealed the fruits of six months' extra development to the world's gaming press last week in Liverpool, where the multiplayer beta - which goes public next Monday - was playable and Bizarre laid bare previously unseen content.

Most notably, the UK developer explained how the power-up system has been expanded to include secondary functions, allowing skilled players to block or evade attacks. Meanwhile the Mod system has been substantially beefed up, offering a wealth of individual tweaks to suit play style.

"The single-player really never ends," lead designer Gareth Wilson told Eurogamer, as he hailed the game's "deep layer of strategy" and expansive community functions.

Our detailed thoughts on the latest build plus exclusive footage of Blur in action will be available very shortly.

Blur hits PS3, 360 and PC on 28th May.

Impossible to choose between this and Split/Second...

    Hurrah, got on the beta.

Good friend of mine did the music for this game, assuming they are still using it, looking forward to hearing it in action. :)

Developer claims "single player never ends" but doesn't offer explanation as to how that is achieved nor is he asked to elaborate. Disappointing.

Released right on top of Split/Second too, decisions decisions. So far I'm leaning more towards Split/Second if I pick either up on or close to release, though that might change based on what the reviews have to say.

Maybe there will be random procedurally generated tracks! The first roguelike racing game!

Ok, seriously, I have no idea what he means.

By "single player never ends" I think the developer is refer to the web2.0rhea aspects, i.e. the Twitter feeds and MyFace integration.

Maybe he means something like the Master League mode in the Pro Evolution games?

Having played both games last September I can confirm that it was a smart decision to add extra polish as Split/Second was a real force to be reckoned with. As a fan of Bizarre ever since MSR on Dreamcast I thought that they had really lost the plot. Here's hoping that both games perform well so that publishers know that originality in the racing genre is a good thing. Shock news!!! GT5 also released in May.....2012.

What I played of Split second at the Eurogamer expo made me think that it was pretty poor, but there were lots or reasons that had nothing to do with the game (like the guy who hogged it before I had a go, left the pad all sweaty and plus the guy on the game next to me stank), still there were some reasons that were to do with the game, most notably choppy frame rate, which I'm starting to think was just me. A poor frame rate is one of those things that gamers on this site always pick up on, so the fact that I've not seen anyone mention it either suggests that everyone assumes it'll be ironed out, or my eyes have frame rate issues.

Plus I vaguely remember Blur has a track that goes through Hackney, so that is a win.
