Bladestorm Preview
End of a Dynasty?
In an industry afflicted by chronic sequelitis, there's no case more serious and advanced than Dynasty Warriors. A quick trip to Wikipedia confirms that since the series debuted on the PlayStation 2 in 2000, we've had 18 assorted Dynasty Warriors titles - and that's not counting spin-offs like Samurai Warriors (same game, different historical period).
That's a whole lot of games which are, in essence, pretty much the same. We mean that in the nicest possible sense; but it's certainly true that Dynasty Warriors has attracted something of a reputation for repetition.
Checking out early videos of Bladestorm, Koei's forthcoming next-gen battlefield epic, anyone would be forgiven for assuming that more of the same was in store. The game focuses on Europe rather than the Far East, with the two opposed sides being France and England and the conflict the Hundred Years War - but it's not just the geography that's half a world away from Dynasty Warriors.

On the contrary, Bladestorm is actually a remarkable departure for Koei's battle games. It feels like what might happen if you asked the team behind Dynasty Warriors to make a medieval strategy game - which, in fact, is probably exactly what happened. The game draws on the action heritage of Dynasty Warriors, certainly, but at its heart this is a strange hybrid between real-time strategy and RPG.
At its most basic level, it works like this; you are a commander on the battlefield, a powerful mercenary who can run around and take direct control of units of troops simply by shouting orders at them. At any given moment, you'll be engaged in a large-scale battle of some description, and will need to work out how best to apply the units at your disposal to wipe out the enemy.
This all works on a combined arms basis - a tangled web of rock/paper/scissors calculations, if you like. Cavalry on horseback will slaughter most foot soldiers, but they will in turn be ripped to pieces by properly prepared soldiers with pikes, who in turn may be more vulnerable to archers - and so on, and so forth. Systems a little bit like this have been present in Dynasty Warriors for years, but here they take centre stage; choosing and commanding units is game here, not button mashing to spam your own super-powerful attacks into the melee.

Herein lies the key difference that convinced us that Bladestorm is no simple Dynasty Warriors clone in European clothing. In Dynasty Warriors, you're a superhero on the battlefield, not just a good warrior. In Bladestorm, your attacks are powerful, but remarkably limited - and they generally have long recharge times. Try to run into a skirmish with the wrong kind of troops, or worse, no troops at all, and you'll quickly discover how un-superhero-like your character really is.
This isn't to say, however, that the game is particularly realistic. There are plenty of touches which emphasise fun over realism, including the ability to apply a variety of stat-boosting buffs to your current troop by raising various flags you'll discover as you progress, and the ability to hire bands of mercenaries who can be summoned to the battlefield at any point.

The eponymous Bladestorm is a bit like a limit break - charge up a gauge to full, and it allows you to temporarily boost the fighting power of your current unit massively.
The level of poetic license which Koei has taken with the Hundred Years War also departs heavily from any sense of reality. The game pitches English leader Edward of Woodstock, better known as the Black Prince, against Joan of Arc - conveniently ignoring the fact that Edward had been dead for half a century when Joan was born. Then again, the game's extensive line-up of military units features various Amazons, Ninjas and the likes at its more obscure ends, so it's fairly safe to say that historical accuracy isn't a major concern.
That unit line-up actually stretches to around 25 different types of unit - and each unit boasts a number of sub-types, so for example the "Broadsword" type breaks down into those that use shields, those that use two-handed swords, those armed with katanas... The end result is hundreds of possible unit types, each with unique strengths and weaknesses in battle.
A Storm of Swords
The mind-boggling array of possibilities in battle is matched only by the epic nature of the game itself. The battlefield available to you covers pretty much all of France, and the game maintains the whole vast area as a persistent world. Each engagement you take part in changes the battle lines - capturing villages and fortresses, opening up supply routes, and so on - all of which is depicted on a multi-level tactical map of the war.
Each individual engagement you take part in slots into a wider strategy as a result, and while often your objective may be to retake a town or fortress, it will be foolish to dive straight into that attempt. Instead you'll need to work your way around to it, severing enemy supply lines and preventing them from getting reinforcements - perhaps capturing several villages on your way to the eventual goal, and changing the tactical map of the battle in real-time as you go.
The progress of the battle is a crucial part of the game, then; each battle fits in with a wider picture, the war as a whole, and fighting your way through the entire war will take dozens of hours. The game is played out on a scale comparable to the most epic RPGs - so it's no surprise that it's also got a very involved character progression system that wouldn't be out of place in any hardcore role-playing game.

Battlefield leaders are vital - take them out, and their troops will be directionless. Lose all of those on your side, and you're pretty much doomed.
The hub of the game is a tavern, in which your character hangs around picking up gossip, accepting new missions, and dealing with various traders and their ilk. You can undertake missions for both sides in the war - you're a mercenary, after all - although tougher missions will require that you gain the confidence of the leaders, which might be tough if you're batting for the other side as well.
Since your character is a faceless mercenary, unlike the historical supermen of Dynasty Warriors, you can customise your look to your heart's content - but more importantly, your character's stats level up in an unusual way as you progress. The game's progression is focused on "books", one for each type of unit. You'll need to acquire the book for a unit before you can take control of it on the battlefield, and level up the skills contained in that book to enhance the abilities of the unit or allow yourself to control more powerful versions of it.
Experience points are doled out on the basis of whichever unit you presently command, so units you use more often will level up faster. This will allow you to specialise on specific unit types, if you want - and you can allocate points on individual statistics within each book, such as "Mastery", which improves the number of soldiers under your command.

The tactical map in the top right contains an almost bewildering wealth of information, from fortresses and supply lines to troop movements. Thankfully you can jump out to the map screen and take time to study it.
As to how it looks - well, Koei's Japanese studio may have been accused of producing too many sequels, but it has never been accused of making ugly games. Bladestorm is no exception; the game is awash with fantastic character design and beautifully detailed squadrons of armoured men hacking each other to bits. The environments are relatively sparse, with most attention being paid to the visuals of the armies and the combat - but even at that, the game can pull off a pretty village or a stunning looking fortress when it wants to.
We're delighted to see Koei striking out in a new direction; early trailer videos of Bladestorm looked like more of the same, but our hands-on time with the game reveals that this is deliciously different, and absolutely intriguing. Perhaps not the end of the Dynasty - but this is definitely shaping up to finally deliver a solid response to those who have (somewhat legitimately) accused Koei of being nothing but Dynasty Warriors in recent years.

Actually it debuted in 1997 on the Playstation. It might not have been a Dynasty Warriors game in the sense of the word these days, but it was still the first game in the series.

It is satisfying being part of a big battle and having a direct influence in it. It's the sort of series which will benefit a lot from technology, the more enemies on screen the better.

Fudce: I was ignoring the 1997 title because it was a beat 'em up, and in Japan at least, it had a different (albeit similar) name - the "numbered" series didn't start there until 2000.

You HOLD RB to attack. When charging a unit into battle, it'll give them a small speed boost, then the skirmish ensues. I admit it can be borin holding a buton, waiting for the squad to end the battle, but like a normal RTS you can end battles faster through smart use of units and their special abilities.
