Bladestorm Preview

In an industry afflicted by chronic sequelitis, there's no case more serious and advanced than Dynasty Warriors. A quick trip to Wikipedia confirms that since the series debuted on the PlayStation 2 in 2000, we've had 18 assorted Dynasty Warriors titles - and that's not counting spin-offs like Samurai Warriors (same game, different historical period).

That's a whole lot of games which are, in essence, pretty much the same. We mean that in the nicest possible sense; but it's certainly true that Dynasty Warriors has attracted something of a reputation for repetition.

Checking out early videos of Bladestorm, Koei's forthcoming next-gen battlefield epic, anyone would be forgiven for assuming that more of the same was in store. The game focuses on Europe rather than the Far East, with the two opposed sides being France and England and the conflict the Hundred Years War - but it's not just the geography that's half a world away from Dynasty Warriors.

On the contrary, Bladestorm is actually a remarkable departure for Koei's battle games. It feels like what might happen if you asked the team behind Dynasty Warriors to make a medieval strategy game - which, in fact, is probably exactly what happened. The game draws on the action heritage of Dynasty Warriors, certainly, but at its heart this is a strange hybrid between real-time strategy and RPG.

At its most basic level, it works like this; you are a commander on the battlefield, a powerful mercenary who can run around and take direct control of units of troops simply by shouting orders at them. At any given moment, you'll be engaged in a large-scale battle of some description, and will need to work out how best to apply the units at your disposal to wipe out the enemy.

This all works on a combined arms basis - a tangled web of rock/paper/scissors calculations, if you like. Cavalry on horseback will slaughter most foot soldiers, but they will in turn be ripped to pieces by properly prepared soldiers with pikes, who in turn may be more vulnerable to archers - and so on, and so forth. Systems a little bit like this have been present in Dynasty Warriors for years, but here they take centre stage; choosing and commanding units is game here, not button mashing to spam your own super-powerful attacks into the melee.

Blokes with maces versus blokes with axes. We're not sure how this is going to turn out, but we're glad we're not in the middle of it.

Herein lies the key difference that convinced us that Bladestorm is no simple Dynasty Warriors clone in European clothing. In Dynasty Warriors, you're a superhero on the battlefield, not just a good warrior. In Bladestorm, your attacks are powerful, but remarkably limited - and they generally have long recharge times. Try to run into a skirmish with the wrong kind of troops, or worse, no troops at all, and you'll quickly discover how un-superhero-like your character really is.

This isn't to say, however, that the game is particularly realistic. There are plenty of touches which emphasise fun over realism, including the ability to apply a variety of stat-boosting buffs to your current troop by raising various flags you'll discover as you progress, and the ability to hire bands of mercenaries who can be summoned to the battlefield at any point.

The eponymous Bladestorm is a bit like a limit break - charge up a gauge to full, and it allows you to temporarily boost the fighting power of your current unit massively.

The level of poetic license which Koei has taken with the Hundred Years War also departs heavily from any sense of reality. The game pitches English leader Edward of Woodstock, better known as the Black Prince, against Joan of Arc - conveniently ignoring the fact that Edward had been dead for half a century when Joan was born. Then again, the game's extensive line-up of military units features various Amazons, Ninjas and the likes at its more obscure ends, so it's fairly safe to say that historical accuracy isn't a major concern.

That unit line-up actually stretches to around 25 different types of unit - and each unit boasts a number of sub-types, so for example the "Broadsword" type breaks down into those that use shields, those that use two-handed swords, those armed with katanas... The end result is hundreds of possible unit types, each with unique strengths and weaknesses in battle.

I quite enjoyed the Japanese PSN demo. Not sure if it's a buy yet, but it was quite fun. (even thouh I had no idea what to do)

Actually it debuted in 1997 on the Playstation. It might not have been a Dynasty Warriors game in the sense of the word these days, but it was still the first game in the series.

@JMM: Are you sure this is out for PS3? EG usually have the available formats o the left hand side of the title. It only states 360. Or is it an oversight ono their part?

I did greatly enjoy Dynasty Warriors back in the day. Did get a bit bored after the 3rd or 4th one, but if they're going to make variations like this then I'm interested.

It is satisfying being part of a big battle and having a direct influence in it. It's the sort of series which will benefit a lot from technology, the more enemies on screen the better.

@morris - Like I said, played the demo. This is one of the games which was originally a PS3 exclusive, alongside FI. An oversight on EG's part.

Sounds like Kessen mixed with traditional Warriors, which is okay with me. I always felt the lack of seperate unit types and no good heroes hurt Kessen. Bladestorm seems to have fixed these.

What are the 18 titles?

DFawkes: The Xbox 360 version of DW5 was called Dynasty Warriors 5 Special, and was slightly different to 'vanilla' DW5.

It's coming out on PS3 as well, that's an oversight on our part. The version Koei actually showed us was the PS3 build.

Fudce: I was ignoring the 1997 title because it was a beat 'em up, and in Japan at least, it had a different (albeit similar) name - the "numbered" series didn't start there until 2000.

JMM - From what I can gather, both versions will be identical - but, yeah :)

miiguel, Kryon: Your posts were deleted because they were nothing but a personal tirade directed at another poster who had said something perfectly valid, and were a blatant attempt to stir up yet another dull flame-war. As usual.

It's hardly a precedent, we delete flaming trolls on a regular basis. The guy made an innocent enough comment and got leapt on with four consecutive posts from you two, all of which were personally aimed at him. That's out of order, and we've deleted stuff along those lines plenty of times before.

So If I went into what I believed to be a PS3 thread and said something like "yeah it looks teh worse than Gears of war" (as f3rrari has done) would that not be considered as me making "a blatant attempt to stir up yet another dull flame-war" or wouldn't that count?

Would f3rrari have made this comment had he known this to be a multi-plat title? I think not but it's OK for him to do it as he's a Sony fanboy anyway Shinj it's cool, we all know where your loyalties lie :)

yeah..., I mean, I get personally aimed on a daily basis here (today included, about two posts above ;) ), and never saw such thing, and I liked it that way.

No, because you'd be talking about the game, not the person. That's what you seem to have missed here - that, and the fact that this is a multi-platform game. Tell me, would you have been so quick to leap to its defence if we hadn't messed up the platforms on it when inputting the article?

Didn't think so. You're even more guilty of exactly the same thing of which you accuse the original poster. Now pipe down - if you want to talk about games, feel free, but if you want to play at silly childish playground arguments, find another site to do it on.

Im actually quite interested in this after reading the preview. Wasnt really a fan of the Dynasty Warriors series and Im glad Koei are moving in a different direction.

Wanted to make a witty comparison between the DW series and the design of the Porshe 911 (something along the lines of being nearly exactly the same with every new iteration) but, unfortunately, Im not that funny.

Not in the slightest - I'm paid for the work I do on EG, and as such I don't mind taking whatever slings and arrows people may choose to throw :) I don't ever delete comments aimed at me, but like the other mods, I *will* step in when I see people deliberately and maliciously trolling other users. Which is what you just did, and the fact that you didn't bring his parents' marriage into disrepute while doing so is neither here nor there.

I've explained why your posts were deleted, and I'm not planning to spend my Saturday evening discussing it any further with you.

Ofcourse you will, that's what the SDF do, Besides you have no choice but to stand and fight mate, it's not like you've got anything better to do like play a decent game, is it :) and I totally sympathise man, it's only natural to want to fight if you're angry about something, I'd be angry too if I'd paid £425 for a haggard toothless three legged dog of a console with no decent games but I'd be even more angry with myself for believing Sonys hype and actually buying into it, infact I may even have killed myself by now if I were you :) But as long as you still have faith in Sonys PR bullshit and teh POwazERs of tEh Cell you will never see the light :(

Played the Japanese demo and that managed to bore me as hell. Didn't even bother to finish. Why do game designers think it's a good idea to put an active time battle bar into a game like this?! I get it that super attacks etc. shouldn’t be available continuously but not being able to perform a basic attack or block for a period of time?! It’s just ridiculous. You run towards enemy, press a button, watch attack, perform block, run away, wait till your bars are recharged and repeat again. When you’ve decimated the enemy troops, you wait till the next wave arrives and do the same again and again and again and again until you decide to end the game.

Les - hold R1 for your basic attacks with the squad and ur guys will also run towards the targets. u dont have to use the specials all the time (well u do if ur the archers)

I quite liked the demo. It's more Kessen than Dynasty Warriors, but frankly I can't get enough of koei's games. Orochi, Bladestorm and Gundam Warriors all in one period :) im a happy bunny.

Though it doesn't have much impact on the core mechanics of the game. It's still "press a button/wait for the bar to fill up again/press the button again", etc., etc.

People seem to be under the misguided impression this is Dynasty Warriors Europe, which it isn't. It's an RTS in console clothing. I've been using identical tactics to those I'd use in Medieval:Total War 2, and they work really well.

You HOLD RB to attack. When charging a unit into battle, it'll give them a small speed boost, then the skirmish ensues. I admit it can be borin holding a buton, waiting for the squad to end the battle, but like a normal RTS you can end battles faster through smart use of units and their special abilities.
