Bits of Home heading to PSP

Sony US spills beans.

Sony America marketing boss John Koller has said PlayStation Home will be heading to the PSP.

The idea at the moment is to have a special area or room created and rendered specifically for the handheld, which you can view on the move.

"Intuitively, if you take the PSP with you, you would want to take some of Home with you," Koller told MTV.

However, nothing is set in stone yet, and Sony UK offered no comment on the news.

PlayStation Home was unveiled in March this year at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco. It lets you create an avatar and personalise a house with game achievements or media uploaded from the hard drive. Some observers have likened it to a cross between MySpace and The Sims. Certainly Sony is hoping it will be as successful.

It is expected to launch in October, although word on its progress has been hard to come by - it's currently nearing the end of closed beta. But Sony will be delivering a press conference at the upcoming Games Convention 2007 in Leipzig this year, where we expect Home to play a key role.

Head over to Eurogamer TV to see the latest Home trailer.

Why restrict it to the PSP? It would've been so much intuitive to make parts of Home accessible from an online hub from any PC in the world.

Yeah yeah, I know "making money" and stuff but still...

Why bother asking any of the UK/European arms of Sony/Nintendo/Microsoft they never know anything until the are told what to say by head office.

But that said, sounds like a good idea.

Sounds alright, but not many people own PSP's so I'm not sure if it's worth it. Actually even less own PS3's! Doh!
  • JediMasterMalik #4 5 years ago

You realise that the PSP has actually sold very well for a non-nintendo handheld, and in fact a gaming console overall.
  • Razz #5 5 years ago

Never said it hadn't. I suppose 25 million units shipped isn't bad for 3 years on the market. On the handheld scene it's still a very niche/cult product though, in the realms of the GP32 and the NeoGeo Pocket. Not like the mainstream success of the DS and the Gameboy franchise before it.

Just because something sells well, doesn't make it a success. The MegaCD sold well... but how long was that around for?

i thought that they had already said something about that... about being able to post up pics in your 'appartment' and them appearing on a tailored web page or something... or was it the opposite way round. i can't remember, but i'm sure big phil demoed something like that at e3.

Surely if you make a profit on something it's considered a success. What on Earth you talking about? o_O

    No idea. :/

I was talking in general terms. I know nothing about the MegaCD.

Apparently it's not a success unless your market leader.

Then again usually the Market leader of the console/handheld holds a unanimous high percentage of markets around the world, while the opposition searches for scraps doesn't seem to be the case for the PSP though...

When is Home on PS3 released, exactly ?
  • reddevil93 #12 5 years ago

Some time in October I think.

So in that case, by your very own reasoning ,it isn't the market leader, not by miles, and therefore not a success. o_O

How can you say the PSP is a niche product like the GP32 and NEOGEO Pocket.
I doubt your average EA playing, blockbuster buying jo public person would have heard of either of those consoles. But you can guarantee they know what a PSP is.
Whether they have one or not is another matter but the PSP is definately NOT niche. Far from it its mainstream.

why PSP games dont appear in any chart, not even in Japan ? I mean, 25 million users and there's just one game that sold more than 1 million, GTA..., it's an odd device. I kinda know their user base, I have several work mates that have one, just because "oh my god it's a Sony!".
  • Whizzo #16 5 years ago

Monster Hunter on the PSP has been the biggest selling game on all platforms in Japan this year.
  • Razz #17 5 years ago

Yeah! It's a brilliant game, those Japs have amazing taste. :)

    Are you from the past?
I don't know anyone who doesn't own one.

    o_O

I was born in 1980 if that answers your question.... no idea what you're talking about really.
  • Arcadiian #20 5 years ago

    I own a PSP.

I use it for er, the internet in bed, if i can't sleep. And um, that's it.
  • manic_mouse #21 5 years ago

What about getting the PSN on it first?
  • el_pollo_diablo #22 5 years ago

I've got a UK psp and a Hong Kong ps3.

Does anyone know if they can be paired?

    thanks in advance!
  • JYM60 #23 5 years ago

    @M_M
You can do that via remotre play iirc.

    @Arcadiian

Dont forget internet on the bog.

In fact 80% of my time playing PSP is when Im curling one off.

If Im not on the crapper Id rather play on a real console.

(I dont ever take my PSP outside because of the armies of ASBO wielding hoodies on every street corner of this great nation who would happily stab me up right proper for the chance to nick a device whose principle selling point is allowing people to play GTA on the lav.)
  • manic_mouse #25 5 years ago

    "@M_M

Yeah you can, but I see no reason why it can't be natively supported on the PSP. It has the WiFi and web-browser, it just needs Sony to implement it.

What? PSP is a mainstream handheld, and nothing like GP32, and way more popular than NGP.

And LOL at comparing it to Mega CD, which only sold 6 million units. PSP is actually getting even more popular now, too. This has been its best year.
  • Razz #27 5 years ago

    I didn't make a MegaCD comparison... o_O

And sorry ecureuil I always forget that the PSP is by most regards "mainstream".

When I think of a mainstream handheld I think GBA and DS. By default the PSP, to me, seems to fit more into the hardcore market as the games on it don't seem to have a broad appeal and seemingly cater to the people that have owned a PS2 previously. Hence my comment about it being in a neiche/cult market.
  • afghan_jones #28 5 years ago

    @razz

since when has catering to the tastes of PS2 owners been a 'niche/cult' market?
  • Razz #29 5 years ago

As in appealing to PS2 gamers, and actually existing hardcore gamers only as opposed to bringing brand new gamers and/or non-gamers in to the fold. I don't know anyone that has bought a PSP that wasn't into gaming already as opposed to leagues of non-gamers that surprise me when they whip out thieir DS. To me that's mainstream appeal.
  • Arcadiian #30 5 years ago

Razz, i understand what you're trying to say, but the PS2 is the best selling home console of all time.

If that isn't mainstream, i don't know what is.
  • Razz #31 5 years ago

    Cheers, but I didn't say the PS2 wasn't mainstream.

    It's bad English. :/

    I meant hardcore gamers specifically.

    "Are you from the past?"

    Lol, isn't everyone?

Sucess in business terms means making a profit on your investment, growing your business, attracting and retaining customers.

Thats pretty much it in a nutshell. Gamers seem to have a different definition. All this talk of the console wars is just kind of funny, because all of the companies involved all just want to make a load of dosh. They probably all play golf together on their day off ffs.
