BioWare reveals new Dragon Age DLC News

PC Xbox 360 News by Robert Purchese

20 November, 2009

BioWare has revealed new Dragon Age downloadable add-on Return to Ostagar, which involves doing what the title suggests.

It's due out this winter or holiday or festive season or whatever you want to call it, and costs £3.99 on PS3, 400 MSP (£3.40/€4.80) on Xbox 360 and 400 BioWare Points on PC. We presume the latter shares the same value as Microsoft Points, but we're asking EA to be sure.

Return to Ostagar takes players back to the titular site where the Grey Wardens were nearly wiped out. You'll uncover history and a secret plot by some King Calian bloke to go behind enemy lines and get to a place many believed was lost to history. And of course that means loot, as King Calian's weapons and armour await those brave enough.

BioWare's promise of two years' worth of DLC has begun with gusto, then.

Head over to either our PC or Xbox 360 review of Dragon Age: Origins - or to our DAO DLC review - to find out more.

A little soon? The game is not even out of its first month.

Loving the game (PC version) BTW. GOTY so far. You hear EG? You were dead wrong with the review.

The main problem I have with DLC like this is that you have to start all over again to get the most out of it. Even if they let you play after you've completed the game the draw of new loot is kinda lost when you have nothing to use it on.

I'm on my second playthrough now, trying out an Arcane Warrior/Blood Mage combo, but I can't imagine I'll wanna do it a third time when the next load of DLC comes out further down the line. I'd rather they spent longer developing a real expansion instead of wasting their time on these bite sized chunks of gameplay.

I'm about to start a second run and so far I don't see ANY problem with having to do the six runs required to unlock all the origin achievements. Every run lets you do something different - not just the major decisions but just the order in which you recruit the allies makes difference. So there is room aplenty for replay. I do understand #3's concern however, especially if you have a particular fun character that you've already completed the game with. All I can say is WELL DONE Bioware for making such an excellent RPG. Started and couldn't stop playing. Truly the BG of modern time.

GOTY and I play the 360 version.

More DLC may be too soon, but I for one will buy it.

Awesome! I'm on my second play through at the moment, if they could release it before I finish my 6th that would be great

I'm loving all this actually worth while DLC that isn't some random MP map or costume/weapon reskin

I'm still struggling (well, heh, 24hours in ;) ) with my first playthrough, but am lovin' it so far - GOTY for me for sure. To my surprize this game is one of the more innovative AAA titles this year - in terms of scope (when was the last game with this much quality content in it?), but also theming (so far this has really been one of the few games that offer ambiguous choices, and not those "Kill the Elves. Or not. Whatever." kind). Orzammar is a real bugger if you want to play the "good" route - there ain't one. It's true it's still quite schematic as far as motivations go, but IMO it's one of the best attempts at ambiguity in videogaming.

If what I hear about the ending is true then the pre-release trailers making it out to be "Mature" only in gory and sexy way are dead wrong (or at least not entirely accurate).

It annoyed me a little when I completed the Joining ritual only to discover that Ostagar was no longer a visitable location. I wanted to free the prisoner there but at the time I didn't have the means to do it without killing him, or at least I didn't think I did. Instead I was planning on going back there. Do you think the prisoner will still be there in this DLC if you haven't already freed him? What did the key he had give you access to anyway?

At the last screenshot in this DLC I think it's him in the cage, although admittedly he doesn't look very lively ;)

Just a chest with some random mage type loot. I think you can only open after finishing the Koraci Wilds quest because some tranquil guy is guarding it before.

Im on my second playthrough right now and havent bought any DLC yet.

Well this is all good for me. I bought the game and sadly even though my system is above minimum specs its unplayable in Ostagar so by the time I get a new graphics card (around Christmas) I'll have all this DLC to play on my first run-through.

i thought it was a great game(360 VERSION)but i think it was my least favourite Bioware console game(KOTOR,Jade Empire,Mass Effect)...i came across a lot of bugs that meant i had to reload an old save every now and then, but that still didn't put me off from getting 1100/1100 ;P

More than the key you get, the real reward for that quest is that the prisoner becomes a member of your party.

The PS3 and XBox versions are fine to play. The PC version just has the option to zoom out a bit more and better textures. Dragon Age plays just like any other Bioware game on consoles.

Almost Orwellian: "DLC without end". We are now enslaved to Bioware. But at least I'm having fun. :)

Only ever so slightly a Re: the Stone Prisoner, am I the only one who thinks Sten is a PITA? Why are half of my characters forever trying to talk me out playing half the game?? :) I've a mind to put that dude back in his cage.

This almost makes me wish I'd bought the XBox version. Couch beats desk any day. But EG also mentioned some things about assigning multiple commands during pause being problematic. Perhaps that's been patched already.

What Bioware (and several other companies) NEED to do is start making save games translate seamlessly between console and PC editions. For what little expense that would incur in development, they'd shift more copies in the end. With a game like this, that I'm likely to play for months on end, I'd love to be able to play on whichever platform is most comfortable/ convenient for me that day. Or switch to the PC if I want to see the better graphics for a particular chapter, or whatever.

I can't wait to spend as much as the full price of the game again, for some sidequests that even combined will be tiny in comparison to the main game! No, wait, the other one.

I'll buy it for sure, but please, longer addons (make them more expensive, for all I care) instead of bite-sized DLC every few weeks in the future. I don't want to boot the game after I've long finished it, only to be finished again immediately. It's not the type of game for which that works.

Well yeah, moments like this and the over the top goryiness is the reason why I wrote "not entirely accurate" ;) Still in other places it really suprised me with rather successful attempts at ambiguity.

I doubt that's getting patched. I admit I don't have a console version of the game, but I get the impression it's a feature of the interface design (essentially, a modified KotOR interface) they went with in the console versions. Changing it would require introducing a cursor for point'n'click controls, which doesn't usually work very well on consoles.

IF you can download the DLC from your game. EA's support is less than crappy. Apparently the DLC from in-game problem began with the latest Patch 101b. I've paid twice for "Return from Ostagar.' yet nothing shows up on my Available Content screen. EA ignored my request for technical assistance for weeks and now they have no idea what I'm talking about. So--I guess I have a game that cannot get anymore DLC, unless of course, they fix the problem in the next patch, without admitting it was a problem of course. Any one else out there having In-game download problems?

Dragon Age was developed primarily for PC, but Apple sought to make the console versions as similar to the ledtek as possible, reworking the interface to suit controllers rather than mouse and keyboard.
