BioWare drops Dragon Age demo hints News

PC Xbox 360 PlayStation 3 News by Robert Purchese

20 August, 2008

BioWare has told Eurogamer that Dragon Age: Origins will be treated to some "very creative" pre-release content.

Dan Tudge, director and executive producer of the Dragon Age series, said this would be but one of the ways BioWare would build and "love" the online PC community.

"We believe, especially with the PC, that community is a huge part of what we're doing online in Dragon Age: Origins, and the Dragon Age universe as a whole," Tudge told Eurogamer in an interview published today.

"We've a lot of plans to not only bring the users into the community through the tool-set, but also through a lot of initiatives we're taking within online activity: downloadable content, both pre-release and post release; free content, paid-for content; online achievements."

"I can't say," he added, when pushed on a demo. "You can expect something very creative from BioWare; the details I can't really go into."

Dragon Age: Origins, according to Tudge, will capture and evolve the enormous online following of Neverwinter Nights. He said this would help battle PC piracy as only registered users will be able to take part online.

Dragon Age: Origins is a dark fantasy role-playing game "absolutely" due for release in early 2009 on PC, and then later (maybe that year) on consoles.

Head over to our full interview with BioWare's Dan Tudge to find out more about Dragon Age: Origins, "the biggest story we've ever created".

This is how PC games will survive. This, Spore, WoW... tie the games core experience to the internet and force pirates to buy the software.♦

Games are better with online hook-ups and extra content anyway, so everybody wins :)

Definite buy!

I hope they pull off something nice for the pre-release stuff, although I do not care as long as the game is great - and I fully expect it to be.

Something very creative? Could be a subtle nod to the idea that the toolset could be released prior to the game, and people could have a go with it in a very "creative" sense?

I'm trying to think way back to the original NWN launch, and didn't the toolset launch before the game then too? Or was it just something simpler like the model viewer? I can't remember.

Hopefully the Dragon Age toolset has learned from the mistakes of the NWN 2 toolset that Obsidian shipped - it now takes so long to develop custom content that there's nothing like the breadth or quality of fan made content for NWN 2 as there is for NWN 1 (comparatively speaking that is - of course there's more content for NWN1, as it's been out years longer).

Looking forward to this; although I'd be inclined to go for it on console these days, the lure of the toolset may just nudge it back to PC territory for me, assuming Bioware can keep the PC specs required sensible.
