BioShock tops UK Chart

Plasmid-do!

According to the Chart Track all-formats chart for the week ending August 25, 2K's Bioshock is number one in sales, GamesIndustry.biz reports.

With this strong start, Bioshock becomes the second fastest-selling Xbox 360 title, just behind Gears of War.

Activision's Transformers: The Game, which had been at number one since the beginning of August, dropped to the second position.

Dr. Kawashima's Brain Training and More Brain Training with Dr. Kawashima for the DS took third and fourth place, with Wii Play dropping from number two to number five on the chart.

Rounding out the top ten were Pokemon Diamond, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Surf's Up, Blue Dragon, and Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter 2.

As with Bioshock, Blue Dragon is a new release for the Xbox 360. The only other new release this week is THQ's Moto GP '07 at number 33.

Ghost Recon: AW2 has re-entered the charts on the basis of the release of the PS3 and PSP versions.

Read GamesIndustry.biz and hot numbers will want to have stats with you.

    And also -- BUY A 360.
  • Dr.Mott #4 5 years ago

    Thank God for that.
  • Skooch #5 5 years ago

Too right! This isone of the best games I have ever played and it well deserves that top spot. Bit of a shame for anyone who doesn't own a 360 as this really is a top title.
  • Dr.Mott #6 5 years ago

I haven't got it yet, I'm currently saving up for an Elite. Of course, by the time I get the money, they'll have hopefully added the Falcon chipset. Hopefully.

    You don't need a 360 to play Bioshock. ;)

Started playing Bioshock on my just-above-minimum-spec PC last night and it is indeed a brilliantly atmospheric game - three levels in and I'm pretty sure 10/10 was the right score. Well deserved success. Runs surprisingly well on my ageing machine too.
  • Hangman #9 5 years ago

Great news, holding off the vessel of shit that is Transformers : the game

PC version is sitting at #4, I think.

Yay! Bioshock deserves all the success it can get. Lets hope it stays there for a while.

Nice to see Blue Dragon in the top ten; I absolutely love the game after 19 hours of play and finally reaching Jibral. My only grievances with it is the slowdown and v-sync tearing but even those don't spoil the game in any major way.

I'm disappointed that MotoGP '07 has only gone in at 33 though, it's a vast improvement on the rushed, buggy mess that was MotoGP '06 and deserves to do well.

When I say "levels" I mean it stopped to load the next section and the loading screen came up. I was only on it for about an hour and a half, so 4 hours to get through the first section seems a bit long...

"Crap. It took me 4 hours to do level 1"

Thats absolutely the way to play a game like Bioshock, at your own pace. If you aren't getting bored then you are simply extending your fun, right?

And let me add my own "yay, the public gets it right for once" to the pile.
  • GrandpaUlrira #27 5 years ago

Pokemon was a good game at number 1 too.

    Bitches.
  • haowan #28 5 years ago

There is a lot of trigger-based zombie-in-the-closet type stuff in bioshock, stupid 90s FPS design that remains a pox on the genre. Still an absolutely awesome game :)
  • geepersd #29 5 years ago

don't good games normally top the chart in the launch week though due to pre-orders and the like and then slink depressingly down the charts as robots in disguise sit around for an age?

fantastic game, have finished it once and the ending really depressed me. dont think any other game has affected me like bioshock has. also sad that this will probably be the best storyline in a game for the next ten years
  • Raya #35 5 years ago

    @andromeda

You obvisouly either don't play enough games or only think 9 and above means good. Bioshock's a good game but it's not that special either. Calling me stupid because I rate it at an 8 (oh look so did Edge) and you don't just isn't worth you posting.

If I read another article saying it's art I'll scream (and I studied fine art) the designers got a book on art deco rather than redoing the cyberpunk/gieger look that's been done to death. Great art direction - no more art than HL2.

    Half life 2 - now that's a 9.5 :-D

Bioshock sold way more on the 360 than the PC???
  • chudders #42 5 years ago

I am inclined to agree with Raya on some points, but that comes from someone who believes he has played games that have accomplished what Bioshock set out to achieve, only earlier and in some cases better. Such is my opinion.

I think some of your frothing, and blatant dismissal of anything less than a gushing opinion of Bioshock as that of a Sony fanboy/window licker, shows just how much the hype and expectation machine really has done its job.

I’d hazard a bet that in two months time a lot of the people foaming at the japs eye about this game will change their opinion from ‘great’ to ‘good’ as, once the hype dies down, this really isn’t the second coming of Jesus, just a man with a beard wearing sandals.

  • Duke_Red #44 5 years ago

It should have been the first fastet selling game, it is better than gears... More Adverts?

And maybe a better one , seen the one on Xbox live, not very good in showing off bioshock to be honest.
  • Kropotkin #45 5 years ago

This is temporary folks. Everyone who wanted to play Bioshock has now bought it as it is a very niche title. It's FPS/Survival Horror on the PC and XBox 360 and you can't get more anti-casual video game player than that. Honestly I have people at work asking me what the best game is out right now and I respond with 'Bioshock'. The look on their face of incomprehension is as sad as their following question: 'Is it on the Wii?' *sigh*.

Trust me folks when I say next week order will be restored with the chart filled with Wii and DS guff with a sprinkling of Sims 2 expansions. I weep for the species.
  • Sid-Nice #46 5 years ago

What do Australians know about video games? Mr Bubbles is a fat bastard and the little Sister's are irritating.
  • bonker #47 5 years ago

More homo-erotic marine types with uber-guns would shift it more on the 360 (in the USA at least).

Bioshock looks 'arty' and I'm sure that will put off the under 20's (or everyone in the USA).
  • The-Bodybuilder #48 5 years ago

    >"Bioshock looks 'arty' and I'm sure that will put off the under 20's (or everyone in the USA). "

Yet here in the UK, it seems everyone likes to run out and hype anything that is "arty", just to look cool, different and "post-modern" (???)

This only happens in the UK. I see it with art, books, movies, and other such nonesense.

Not to downgrade bioshock, but listening to the hype for game here is like listening to the hype of halo 3 in america.

People here need to stop pretending that thier taste is so much better than americans. Take out the log in your eyes first, you hypocrites. We're just as likely to overhype anything "artsy fartsy" in this country to "prove" how much better we are than others (especially america).

This is not an attack on bioshock, but an attack on those greatly overhyping the game, even though more than half haven't even bought/played it yet.

Edit: When I said "nonesense", I'm not saying books, movies and such are nonesense (obviously not).

Bioshock is amazing and should be top of the sales charts every week, only games this year I expect to even come close are Assassins Creed and Mass Effect.

    Bollocks.
  • Hypercube #51 5 years ago

Bah, I'm still crying quietly because my PC can't play it at all :( Still, pay day yesterday, so I'm browsing for new bits! Hmm, AMD or Intel... nVidia or ATI...
  • mrbandersnatch #52 5 years ago

When we regularly see the likes of Harry Potter and Transformers top the charts its refreshing to see a game with production values as high as BioShocks up there. Despite all the detractors (and I agree its overhyped) it is one of the best examples of the FPS horror genre to-date and deserves to sell well.

Personally my main complaint - lack of multiplayer. For me that is an automatic -1.

  • RexRunti #54 5 years ago

Completing Bioshock in 8 hours is a bit like buying a book and just reading every other chapter. If you're playing properly it should take you around 20 hours.
  • Raya #55 5 years ago

    @ulov3

ha ha - doh - it's on pc as well you know? Running it at high spec so I don't need the slightly lesser 360 look thank you... What's a PS3?
  • GuitarWolf #56 5 years ago

Topped the Irish charts too if I'm not mistaken.
  • Nabokov #57 5 years ago

"Bioshock sold way more on the 360 than the PC???"

Downloads from Steam propably aren't included in these numbers? I suppose quite many with reasonably fast connection donwloads it, atleast I don't bother buing a physical copy of any game if I can download it.
  • EmiliasHorse #58 5 years ago

    @RexRunti
    Spot on.

Why purchase Bioshock and rush through it like a run and gun corridor shooter. Savour every moment because games this good are too rare to waste.
  • The-Bodybuilder #59 5 years ago

    >"Bollocks."

OK, it may not only happen here, but sure as heck more common here than in any other place. Britain is known for being "stuff-upper lipped". It's the stereotypical view of how the rest of the world sees here.

I see it in every UK-based site, from eurogamer to football365 (how you can be pretentious in football I don't know, but they manage to do it).

  • finty13 #62 5 years ago

    @TedStokes168

Did you even branch out and explore the levels? Did you take down any big daddies? 8 hour completion suggests no.

  • DjFlex52 #65 5 years ago

I can see why people would give this an 8/10 and others a 10/10. You can play this game just like any other FPS but it's not really just an FPS. If you finished it in 8 hours then you shouldn't have played it at all because that's not what Bioshock is about. There are so many strategic choices to make throughout the game and so many hidden places to find that finishing it in 8 hours diminishes the game value...hence 8/10.

Lastly...there's no need for a multiplayer in Bioshock because then we would have had to wait another year for them to finish beta testing it for balancing issues.

damn...should have posted this comment in the review section to get it closer to 1000

  • Daymare #66 5 years ago

Even worse - "it's pretentious" argument is way too often used by people that don't understand something and want to degrade it to their level. I'm not saying Bodybuilder is doing that in his post or that nothing can be pretentious - I'm just saying it's a "dangerous" word to be used in an argument.

I wouldn't dare suggest better or worse, just different, maybe more sophisticated perhaps but it's all just a matter of taste ...

  • smelly #71 5 years ago

This surprises me. I didnt think it'd sell that well being the type of game that the "mainstream" lot would enjoy.

Then again, dont s'pose there's much else to choose between this time of year.. So it wouldnt have to sell THAT much to be top

But well done to it - must get around to playing it... But my life is too busy nowadays to devote to a big game..

  • smelly #74 5 years ago

@DjFlex52: Erm.. well done.. or something.

I dont know why i'm bothering to reply to you, but my point was i dont have time in my life nowadays to devote to a big complex game like this. But I would REALLY REALLY REALLY like to after reading the reviews.

Unfortunately as you get older you get less time to spend on games, so you only ever end up picking up games you can play for 20-25 minutes at a time.

Such is the reason why i probably wont play this (boo), and as you're so quick to call me a nintendo fanboy or whatever, just because i like to DISCUSS nintendo games in a nintendo thread without trolls coming in and spoiling it - the same goes for metroid (Which is out this week over here).

Back on topic i go.. Anyone got the sales figures? Has it at number 1 as nothing else decent is out at the moment ? or has it sold shiteloads and wouldve been number 1 even if it was christmas?

I'm genuinely interested - traditionally games which require thought to play tend not to go down as well as mindless blasters.

  • TheUnionFrag #75 5 years ago

"If you play it though you will find it takes 8 hours, even for an average player. "

I'm playing through it at the moment for the first time. I've gone after all the big daddies and all little sisters [apart from one who just disappeared into her hidey-hole when I nicked her big daddy :p]. It's taken me 7 hours to get to the Market . . . and I know I'm nowhere near the end. I'm no newbie to shooters either.

  • subtlesnake #76 5 years ago

I explored almost every area and took me about 20 hours.
  • DjFlex52 #77 5 years ago

I explored almost every area and took me about 20 hours.

    @subtlesnake

    That's more like it :)

What's the point of rushing through the game in 8 hours when the devs gave us so much to explore?
I guess if SS2 came out this year....gamers would rush through it in 10 hours and miss most of the goodies and give it a 8/10
