BioShock PS3 to get post-launch patch

2K addressing your concerns.

2K Marin is to address niggles in the PS3 version of BioShock with a new patch.

It'll be released sometime after the game launches on 24th October, according to the official forum.

An entire fix list will have to wait, but we're told the Big Daddy and Elite Bouncer texture issues have been fixed, as have the white or discoloured bars appearing during the opening plane crash sequence.

The blurring effect will not be addressed, however, as 2K Marin used this a way to optimise performance on the console.

Not that we noticed any difference during our PS3 review of BioShock, which you may have spotted on the site this morning.

The only real difference will come via the PS3-exclusive downloadable Challenge Rooms. We had a chance to go through these recently, and will be bringing you our thoughts soon.

24th October? I'm sure its winging its way to me now!

Yeah, it's out tomorrow. Also, I love the guys who made it no doubt but with a whole year to simply port a product, a launch patch seems... don't they test games anymore.

The old blurring effect, I remember when devs started using that on later PS1 titles to milk extra performance by hiding low framerates. Dino Crisis 2 for example. Didn't think we'd go back to that.

I presume the blurring effect is present in the demo then... I can't say I noticed it really. The PS3 demo's framerate did feel a little lower than the 360's though and the jaggies are more apparent, not that the 360 version was free of them.

Based on the demo though, PS3 BioShock is an excellent port, I can't see any PS3 owner complaining about the quality really. I'm actually quite jealous that people will be playing this game for the first time... damn, I wish I had selective amnesia so I could play it again for the first time! LOL

I agree with being jealous about new players, being able to unplay a game would be good. Not knowing what was coming in Bioshock made it so much better. That's the main reason I'm holding off until my rubbish memory gets rid of all that and I can play it again :)

I really wish developers would be given time to finish games so they don't require patches though. I know newer consoles need more effort, and it's all harder to test, but still. I do like Burnouts method of patching with fixes and extra content all at once though.

I like the idea of selective amnesia!

Be so good to erase memory and go through a game again fresh. Metal Gear Solid 1 would be the one for me, that and FF7.

@ Widge - you are a frickin' legend. I remember after finishing MGS back in about 1999 saying to my pal I wished I could erase it from my memory so I would have the joy of playing it through again.

Superb call with FFVII too. :D

    WHAT???

I don't (yet) own a PS3 but the news of a console game getting a launch-day patch always depress me. Being Next Gen is being PC it seems...
  • drumbaby #10 3 years ago

There's a lot of old gen console games that could've benefited from a patch, but couldn't. It's a good thing, as long as devs don't rely on it to push out half baked games that are essentially broken.

Like Alone In The Dark on 360 you mean?
  • YeOldeGamer #12 3 years ago

GTA IV on the PS3 also had a somewhat blurred appearance.
    Coincidence?
Or maybe a way of getting 'acceptable' performance from the PS3.

Good thing almost 100% of PS3s are connected to the internet.
