BioShock demo on Live

PC version this month.

2K Games has released a demo of BioShock on Xbox Live, and has said a PC version will follow later this month.

The digital package weighs in at 1.35GB, and due to high demand people have reported slow download speeds - so you may be in for a little wait.

BioShock is the first-person action adventure from Irrational Games, the studio recently renamed to 2K Boston. In it, you play as a pilot who stumbles on a submerged and hidden world, created by scientists in the 1930s to be a perfect society. However, you soon discover it has all gone a bit wrong, and bump into scary little girls with enormous diver-suited bodyguards.

What follows looks as though it could be one of the best games of the year.

BioShock is due for release on PC and Xbox 360 on 24th August. Look out for our review this Friday.

Head over to our BioShock gamepage to see all our coverage to date.

BTW once the local loop servers have the download it should go super quick. So wait a bit and let others download it first ;)

hmmm... so bloody jealous...! guess I'll have to wait (for over) a year before this comes out on PS3... anyway, enjoy yourselves, 360 owners...

    Me wants.

Rings of Death + house move (no internets for a bit) = sad face
  • t8yman #13 5 years ago

dunno how slow mine is going, but hopefully it will be finished when I get home at about 1.00

so - those who have played it, does it come close to living up to the hype (yes, I know its only a demo, but you can get a feel for these things)
  • Dizzy #14 5 years ago

    > does it come close to living up to the hype

Yes... probably GOTY. Only Mass Effect can prevent that IMHO.
  • mkreku #15 5 years ago

PC demo later this month? Uhm.. it's being released in 11 days. PC users need love too!
  • Rayn #16 5 years ago

The demo alone is my GOTY so far. Fantastic stuff.
  • Katsumoto #17 5 years ago

ill just wait for the actual pc version I guess. Sounds like it's living up to the hype and reviews though, very promising!

Lucky I have Gothic 3 to play while I wait. Surprisingly good game, despite what the reviews have said. Just apply the 1.12 official patch and the 1.4 community patch and the game is almost bug-free.
  • Max_Powers #22 5 years ago

Oh, can't wait to check this out tonight
  • sharpfish #23 5 years ago

Can't wait for this on my new uber PC ;)

Cool on X360 too but it's a FPS and it deserves a mouse (and a gf8800 gtx).

I left this demo downloading this morning before I went to work. It had reached 4% after 30 minutes which means it's a slow, slow download despite my 8 Mbit/sec connection. Thank goodness you can turn off the 360 and it stills continues to download. Hopefully the demo will be there for me when I get home assuming it's not stuck at 57% or something... :?
  • Guv #26 5 years ago

Wow thats one slow download... on a 100 Mbit here and its on 2% after 20 minutes. yeesh
  • ChrisOTR #27 5 years ago

    Arrrrrrrrrrgh. I don't own a 360. And it hurts.
  • Rirekon #28 5 years ago

May as well download this, not like I haven't pre-ordered it already ;-)
  • afghan_jones #29 5 years ago

Does anyone know if the demo is the opening part of the full game or a section from later on?

If it is from a later level i dont want to spoil it for myself so would rather it is from the opening of the game.
  • Monkey_Puncher #30 5 years ago

Mine's been on 8% for the last 4 hours, think I'll try downloading later and leave it for now.
  • Dizzy #31 5 years ago

"If it is from a later level i dont want to spoil it for myself so would rather it is from the opening of the game. "

Apparently it is not from the full game. They have "moved" some stuff around so you will have a different experience in the full game. That being said... the locations are probably the same, I don't think they would take the time to change that.

How do you carry on downloading when you turn off the xbox? I've got all the latest updates, but when i turn off my pc says network connection lost. do you need to be running off a router?

  • t8yman #42 5 years ago

@smurphs, you need to go to the system tab on the dash, go to power options I think it is, and check "allow background downloading" or some suchlike, it then goes into low power mode when you switch off, and shuts down fully when done. you know it is working cos the green ringpiece keeps winking at you 80)
  • Raid #43 5 years ago

Smurphs, there's an option in the settings blade.

Been downloading for an hour now, and it's only at 61%. I wanna plaaay.

"If you can't afford a decent enough PC to run the latest games you'll have to make do with a console but for me that is not the case luckily. "

Ha yes... the "I make more money" argument. Dude.. most of us have good PCs... some of us just like to play some games in the couch and some games in our geeky PC room. Get over it!
  • t8yman #47 5 years ago

PC gamers get really boring when they go on about K/M controls. it just sounds so elitist.

I dont want a keyboard and mouse to play fps's, the pad is fine. I like a big comfy chair, a beer and some crisps. not a desk. the day the 360 gives K/M support is the day I sell it.
  • the_sas_man #48 5 years ago

  • Katsumoto #49 5 years ago

In fairness, Console gamers get just as elitist about how comfortable couches are. It works both ways, alas! Personally, I just want someone to invent some sort of weird tray thing that slots over your armchair where you put your keyboard and mouse. Sorted.

This is not about who gets paid more, this is about how best to play a game, if it is a FPS or RTS it simply is better on a PC

  • miiiguel #54 5 years ago

    That's me.
  • klanger13 #55 5 years ago

Now I have never really been sure what you get for your 40 squids when you get Gold membership but you would have thought that file servers that could deal with the type of demand that a popular demo produces would be one of them. Come on Microsoft, get your act together.
  • Dizzy #56 5 years ago

"This is not about who gets paid more, this is about how best to play a game"

And yet some people think that "best" means a console pad, a couch and a giant screen with big sound systems. Just stop this emo bullshit and let people decide what they play. I am sick of this mouse/pad whining. get a f*cking life.

For me PC is usually RTS and MMORPGs. Everything else is console because my gf/friends usually come round to watch/cheer/play. They can't do that in my "PC room".

Also since when is "most accurate" the same as "best". TBH if you are as precise in real life with a gun as with your mouse you should be a living legend. It can be argued that pads are more realistic for FPS games (except the turning probably ;)

@klanger, you dont need to pay $40 to download demos.
  • klanger13 #58 5 years ago

No I don't need to pay 40 squids to download demos but if you have, you'd think that you'd get some dedicated servers? Most PC download services do this.
  • PearOfAnguish #59 5 years ago

"Console gamers get just as elitist about how comfortable couches are."

They do like to bang on about that, don't they.

If you really find sitting at your computer uncomfortable I suggest you buy a new chair.

PC vs 360 is it ?

We've all been branded with Live now you know, relax.
  • Tejstar #63 5 years ago

I've just played half an hour of the 360 demo and I have to say that this is one of the most atmospheric games I've played. The attention to detail just brings Rapture to life. The graphics have been mentioned a lot, but it is extremely impressive, I find the art deco environments more impressive than those of Gears of War. I stopped after half an hour as I didn't want to get too into it without spoiling the full game, but it's safe to say that this is one game that has quality written all over it.

I can't wait to see how the PC demo compares.
  • bigbadbeasty #64 5 years ago

    @Dizzy

    Swear all you like.

It doesn't change anything nor is it elitist, joypads simply suck when playing RTS's and FPS's. But it works the other way too- Platformers and beat'em up's do not work on PC.
  • miiiguel #65 5 years ago

believe it or not, in my case it has nothing to do with my wage, or my office desk chair, or my computer, or whatever.
    tree-six-tee > play
    computer > work

I don't mix the stuff, as matter of fact I just have an XP virtual machine on my SuSE box, and it's going to be that way, like forever.

  • GamesConnoisseur #68 5 years ago

There will be unavoidable PC vs 360 debate and head to head comparasion (IGN), but personally just damned glad that we are able to get our hand on this hallowed piece of title. I got a good PC set up but yet do prefer to play mostly on 360 in much more comfort.

Sure, PC does have advantages, such as for modding with Oblivion and keyboard/mouse is better but gamepad can work and simply your immersion in gaming. Its all subjective, and to each their own.

Rock on BioShock, and let us all be together in expressing our heart felt sorrow for those without ninja PC/X360, and thus missing out on one of the greatest game to grace our lives!
  • Arcadiian #69 5 years ago

No really, why are you arguing over which you like best ?

I honestly couldn't give a toss what anyone else likes. I like what I like.

And I'm sure BioShock will be excellent whether on PC or 360.

Edit: @ Mattigan. You should have set it to download before you left, it'd probably be nearly done by the time you got back.

Cant wait to get home play the demo again and finish it :-)

the graphics on 360 are great definitely a showcase AAA game (ps the 4 reviews so far have averaged 98%)

I prefer playing FPS games on consoles with a controller and i have a quad core GTX8800 PC..

Its not practical for me to put my pc in the living room and connect to my HDTV and i done want to play a game like bioshock on my pc monitor

As soon as the pc mods come out ill pick it up though

It's not elitest, it's a preference. And according to 2K boston, the devs making Bioshock, the PC version will be the "most polished" as they've had more time to work on it. It's quite an easy decision which versin to get if you've got a decent enough PC.

What worries me is what a "decent PC" is when being challenged by a game like Bioshock..

And I can't for the life of me play FPS's with a gamepad. I have to buy the PC version of this.

for me the main problem with K/M controls is mainly a lack of immersion.. the inconvenience of using the controls (yes yes, from a sofa in front of a telly), plus using a keyboard for walking just really pains my wrist after about 5 minutes. Since that is what the keyboard is mostly used for why can't someone come out with a Wii nunchuck style add on with one analogue stick and maybe some buttons too for extra functionality.. so you can use a mouse to control the pointer but still have comfortable analogue control of moving, far superior to a keyboard in my opinion. (Yet no one seems to be that bright to come up with this yet, grr)
  • rashes #79 5 years ago

Jaysus. Does every bloody comments thread have to descend into a grudge match about something. Wii vs everything. 360 vs Ps3. 360 vs PC. Mouse/Keyboard vs. controller.

A great game is coming to us soon .. let us all rejoyce!
(apart from PS3/Wii owners that is.... he he!)
  • Katsumoto #80 5 years ago

@Dizzy - ;) No my girlfriend is sitting somewhere else waiting for me to get off the pc so she can play the Sims 2 and Theme Hospital! Duh!

On a side note, the latest PCGAMER had a mini feature on the feasibility of having a PC in the lounge and even showed one of their writer's living rooms, with pc hooked up to massive tv et al. Ill have to give that a go, though I admit noone has invented the amazing keyboard tray I asked for earlier yet

I dunno I generally play in front of a huge HDTV and 7.1 surround for all my PC games. Got a comfy office chair and a table that attaches to the arm rests for the keyboard and mouse. I suppose most people see PC gamers someone hunched in front of a 17" monitor with headphones on. :/ Nowadays this is usually not the case.

Yes. This will always come to pass. It is the way of things.

Man is a warlike animal, craving conflict and destruction. And the most warlike of all are the games geeks. The interweb is their battleground, the stage for their great war.

All games geeks constantly battle each other, bitter factional rivalries threatening to destroy the very fabric of the interformation-super-webway.

However, the constant cyber violence brings an equilibrium of sorts, for if ever the games geeks should unite, their collective 'LOL' could rend the very universe asunder.

Only through eternal conflict is the mighty power of games geeks held in check.
  • Dizzy #87 5 years ago

    >Nowadays this is usually not the case.

I think most PC gamers are still stuck in their geeky computer room (with some plastic models of anime characters on desk ;)

But yes.. you can ofc move your PC to the couch and enjoy all the advantages of consoles. Still I wouldn't really like a keyboard and mouse to play since you need to put this on a table in front of couch (something we don't have at home).
  • neil_likes_bums #88 5 years ago

When will people learn, nobody cares about your opinions on mouse/controller, or pc/xbox, or ps3/xbox etc because everybody has their own opinions, ahhhh!!!

  • Katsumoto #97 5 years ago

Anyway, to wrap up on a serious note: I of course respect the fact that some people prefer pads. Personally, I can't get my head round using them for first person shooters (though for most other genres bar RTSs I find them a DELIGHT!) but I can certainly respect that some people can and do. I don't, however, agree with this notion that PC gamers are all hunchbacked loners. The fact is, we are all gamers, we are all going to be percieved as sad as each other, and we should all give equal amounts of toss i.e. none.

When your average group of townies at a trendy bar starts discussing Bioshock, I will be very worried, after all! I don't know if I would be worried in a good way or a bad way, but definately worried

  • rashes #98 5 years ago

    @afghan_jones

Well put! But is there not a place for these warriors to clash? Away from collateral damage and all that?

    NeoGaf perhaps?
  • afghan_jones #99 5 years ago

    @rashes

Perhaps, perhaps. The collateral damage from these Conzole Warz can be terrible.

I once saw a family home destroyed by a wayward LOL that was fired into a Halo thread by a Sony fanboy. The LOL ricocheted into the side of the house, killing both parents instantly. The two children now live with their grandmother, although they were both crippled as a result of the attack and their 80 year old grandmother has to carry them on her back one at a time up to their 6th floor apartment.

Maybe in time the geeks will reach an accord but if they do it is only a matter of time before they turn their collective ROFLs onto the rest of the world. Better that they should fight amongst themselves rather than plunge the world into darkness.

Back to the demo, have been downloading it for two hours now and still at about 20%

Stunning demo - roll on the 24th

As one of EG's 30-something-seen-it-all-dancing-monster-was-the-best-game-ever crowd, I have to say, even I'm impressed by this one - it looks excellent. I suggest you watch some of the dev videos to see why everyone else is getting so excited.
  • finty13 #109 5 years ago

This is probably the first game in a long time which i know very little about so I'm not going to spoil it now by playing the demo. I've spoiled too many games before by doing that.
  • rashes #110 5 years ago

    @finty13

I'm the same.. I've been avoiding previews and dev videos and I might just skip this demo so as to get the full game experience!

Jesus. In my desperation to find out anything I can about Bioshock all I've learned is that some people like keyboards/mice, other people like pads . . .

If only the download servers were faster, we'd have probably all gotten to talking about the game by now!

I begun downloading at 12 CET and was done by 15, on 1,5 mbps connection. If it's doable in Poland, it clearly has to be in the UK. :)

Oh, and the game itself feels *a lot* like System Shock 2 in a different setting. Which is not exactly a bad thing, no, it's not a bad thing *at all*. :)

Christ alive, this thread needs a slap.

Newsflash. A games console is a computer with a control pad plugged into it. End of story. Who gives a crap what kind of cushion you sit on.

And declaring stuff like "rts games are better on a PC" as fact is nonsense. Its all entirely subjective.

And thirdly, who the f*ck cares. I thought this was about the Bioshock demo.

I've found that sometimes the download speed of these demos seems to be completely unrelated to your connection speed. I've a 3Mb line and my brother has 1mb and he always pulls them down way quicker than I can.

Seems to vary a lot geographically.
  • Darren #129 5 years ago

I'm buying the game for the 360 (Collector's Edition) and the PC (Standard Edition) so I can lounge on my bed and play the game in the dark with the controller and also try the game out with a keyboard and mouse and use the mods that will eventually come out for it. There's no keyboard/mouse/controller bias from me! I think the game is that good that it's worth buying for both formats. I bought Oblivion for the 360 and PC for the same reasons.

I couldn't complete Condemned because it was bloody heart attack material and I just managed to scrape through FEAR.

  • kangarootoo #132 5 years ago

    @rashes

It may be contention rate that is accounting for the difference between your and your brother's download speeds. Whatever your possible maximum, it is affected by how many others in your vicinity are using the same service. I think cable has a contention rate of 1-20, with ADSL having 1-50, which might be a factor if you and your bro aren't using the same type of service.

So if half your street have the same broadband service as you, but your brother's neighbours are less well installed, you would possibly see speed hits as a result.
  • Keso #133 5 years ago

Well I had to get up for work at 4.15 this morning and had read that the demo would be out, so I had this waiting for me when I got home! :)

All I can say is holly crap in bucket, this is just stunning.

I'm not really a fan of FPS, but I have had my eye on this for some time, and it doesn't disappoint. My simple joy at obtaining a security bot of my very own cannot be expressed.

Also, I'm no graphics whore, but the water effects in this are simply amazing. When you first land in the water, I sat there for a moment, as I thought it was some pre rendered cut scene, then I realised I could move around!
  • lennon #134 5 years ago

Is there any sign of tearing? A couple of the videos I saw looked quite bad for it.
  • Keso #135 5 years ago

YEah, the tearing in some of the videos worried me, so I was looking out for that too, but I'm happy to say that there was none that I could see on my 40" TV. :D

  • t8yman #138 5 years ago

there is no tearing. Forget where I read it, might have been the official ms forums.

I deleted my download and restarted it, it was on 44% after 6 hours, seems to be moving faster now.
  • Keso #139 5 years ago

I may go play through it again... Seems more fun when other people are struggling to get it... ;)
  • Arcadiian #140 5 years ago

Argh, I left mine at 60% an hour ago, to come back and find it still at 60!

Signed on and off again and it jumped to 64% though.

Wishful thinking, but i have to try again. o_O
  • inomine #141 5 years ago

Bah, this is a bit silly. Set it going when I left the house this morning, 9 hours later it's still on 65% I think this is taking the mickey just a bit. I realise that ever single person on Live is downloading this, but christ.
  • Darren #142 5 years ago

I left the demo downloading from 8:15 am this morning, got home 30 minutes ago to find that it had only gotten to 63% after NINE hours!!! I'm astounded. After waiting 15 minutes and seeing that it still hadn't moved on from 63%, I decided to delete the download and try it again. Needless to say after 15 minutes it's only 3% of the way through. Xbox Live really does suck when it comes to downloading large files of popular demos. It happens every time, you'd think that Microsoft would have sorted this out by now!
  • afghan_jones #143 5 years ago

im going home now so could you all get off LIVE in about half an hour or so then i can download in peace.

  • inomine #147 5 years ago

I reckon this is a clever ploy, they release it weeks before the PC demo, but we'll all end up getting to actually play it on the same day :/
  • code601 #148 5 years ago

Every time something big comes out this happens, Im stuck at 58%. Because it just says "58%" i cant tell if its actually downloading or not. Whats the big deal with saying what damn speed the download is running at.

Xbox360 needs a bittorrent client for downloads like this. I cant see any other way to cure the problem.
  • shido #149 5 years ago

Siiiigh i'm stuck at 58% too. Oh well...
  • Arcadiian #150 5 years ago

  • sajtion #151 5 years ago

My demo keeps freezing randomly. Nothing else has done that so far, save PGR3 once about a year ago. Hmm, I guess it's true what they say about graphically taxing games causing overheating, although GoW ran always perfectly. Anyway, no Bioshock demo for me then. Pity.
  • sharpfish #155 5 years ago

three points (as the first person in this thread to mention 'PC controls')

    1. I have a 360 and I love it, I vastly prefer ALL other gametypes to be on the 360 because the controller is that comfortable and my 32" HDTV is far more immersive.

    2. However, I have one of those wireless gadgets that let you use your Xbox controller (wireless) on the PC so I have the choice of BOTH control methods IF I buy the PC version (which is £15 cheaper too), I can run it on higher resolutions (GF8800gtx etc) and STILL play it on the 32" if I want (My pc is located near my TV and hooked up permanently). I have nothing against the Xbox/HD/Controller combo and in 90% of cases would prefer a game on it for achievements, controller and what have you. If Bioshock was ONLY on the 360 then it's a no brainer, I would play it with the controller and be (mostly) happy.

    3. Unfortunately, as a PC gamer of over ten years (and a console gamer of over 20 years) I still cannot accept that moving around an environment in first person is fully viable/pleasurable on a dual analog setup, it IS like controlling a tank and is anything but fluid/immersion (which a mouse most definitely is). For the majority of console owners there is no problem because they have never known different, they accept the clunky control as 'standard' on FPS. Gears of war btw works great on the controller, 3rd person games with seperate cameras feel great on the Xbox360 compared to the PC, as do Racing games, fighting games and almost every other genre.

I don't really think it's an issue that any of us PC gamers have a problem with console players using a controller (as we would too if we didn't have the choice/capable PC) it's just our personal preference and I too wish the thread had stayed more on topic. It's gonna be great on PC or 360 so let's unite against the common enemy who doesn't get to play this great game (the ps3 fanboy) instead of worrying about mouse/controller issues. ;) (edited to emphasise this is sarcasm and any 'ps3 fanboys' already have enough crap to deal with from Sony so we shouldn't pick on them)

One thing that really suprises me though is that with the ever growing emphasis on console FPS games (Halo being the main factor) that MS/Sony didn't design/include a "perfect" FPS specific controller that would piss all over a mouse/keyboard for comfort and ease of use while still being precise and immersive. Come on MS think about it, a hand mounted navigator and 'look around/aim' device (that doesn't tread on Nintendo's toes) is your next target... I hope you hit it!

Let's hope someone puts the PC demo on a torrent site somewhere when it's released.. I don't want to rely on any single source.
  • M83J01P97 #162 5 years ago

There isn't going to be a PC demo before launch apparently.

I think 2k are a bit pissed at the fact that you can already download all the BioShock system files from various torrent sites and there are even cracks ready to bypass the online activation for when it goes live.
  • InternetRed #163 5 years ago

    Ok finally downloaded it.

Wow. Not bad at all. There's a few things that i find iffy, such as if you stand under water and look up, the water just cuts off, water effects around the aircraft (looked like the same texture for "foam" used over and over again), and that anything deemed "movable" will fly through the air as if superman gave it a smack with a wrench apart from you.

Other than that, it felt good. It feels very frantic and the theme fits it so well. I was actually torn when it came to killing the splicer with the pram, after listening to her talk, i just wanted to turn around and go the other way. Also, although i've seen a couple of splicers with the same costume, there's a greater variety, so not all the thuggish splicers look identical for example.

I should have used guns more. I got right into the "BULLETS ARE OF LOW SUPPLY" mood, and ended up firing only one gun in the whole demo (the tommy gun, i picked it up and got attacked, so panicked and gunned the splicer down)... i might go back in a bit and try other ways to kill things.
  • Downside #164 5 years ago

amazing demo, took me over an hour of wandering about, getting scared shitless, searching bins for goodies..

Well done "journey" into the game and wonderfully simple controls.
Had great fun twatting saucepans with the wrench, zapping mobs and firing guns wildly in utter panic.

hacking bots was a cinch, but still couldn't tell freidnly ones from foes.

    graphically lush, nice particle effects.

Controls were easy, noted some lock-on with the aiming, but even the harshest K/M proponent should be able to cope with it, given some practise and the ease with which the game draws you in.

Save points are done seamlessly with you regenerating at the last "revive pod" you passed. They allow you to respawn and join the fight at a time of your choosing - all done with such aplomb that it doensn't even seem like the cunning gameplay device it is.

If you've got an old PC, a '360 might be a cheaper upgrade than a new PC, dual core cpu, a gallon of RAM and a Ferrari video card.

Another nod for the '360, it looks incredible pumped thru my projector. I've got my PC connected to it as well, but that keyboard and mouse on my lap just doesn't work for me.

For the record, I thought Gears of War was dreadfully underwhelming in both graphics and gameplay - but Bioshock....

Whatever platform is your choice, this game delivers an amazing immersive experience that really backs up the hype.

The whole PC vs 360 K&M debate should have been settled long ago, if only 360 games supported it.

Oh well, PS3 does (at least in UT3).

And nothing will stop my giggling.

    this is a definite purchase!

  • TedMoseby #175 5 years ago

Wonderfully atmospheric demo, a bit too tense for my tastes - I think I'd prefer to explore Rapture in a more sedate RPG/adventure setting than an FPS. It really reminded me of System Shock 2 in its feel, which is probably one of the highest compliments I can pay to a game.

One downside, ironically, is the Unreal 3 engine to me - the characters look "typical" of the engine - look at the texturing and effects on the characters in the Bioshock demo, Rainbow Six Vegas and Gears of War, and they all have the same sort of "look at me, I'm really, really textured!" feel about them, which doesn't quite gel in my opinion.

On the strength of the demo though, it deserves to do exceptionally well.

awesome demo, simply sublime, one thing i did find annoying was that you couldnt see your own body when you look down, i mean thats not difficult and it really should be a standard feature, because this also means no real time shadow being cast from yourself which i noticed massively when u first step into the tower and the lights shining through the door, but no look no shadow from you. hell even call of juarez had this ^_^
  • dave06 #181 5 years ago

oh and btw i noticed something really odd with my background downloading, in that id id start a download and turn off the 360 so its dling in the background, go away for like an hour look its on 50% so i turn it back off go away for another hour come back and its at 45%, i mean wtf it actually went down ? it was mighty strange
  • miiiguel #182 5 years ago

Katsumoto : Civiliztion 4 is coming to the 360.
  • Katsumoto #183 5 years ago

Do you honestly think it will be unchanged, however? That's an honest question, i'm not trying to goad you. Also, on top of that: Counter-Strike, Defcon, Bioshock/Oblivion which can and have been modded etc. I'm not denying the 360 is cool, i'm just saying that because it's cool doesn't mean pc gaming is irrelevant. I was just responding to that one comment

in fact, while we're on that: If I really wanted to I could play Bioshock with a pad and on my massive tv anyway, so its not like we're at a loss, whereas, as things stand, you won't be able to play Civilisation Revolution with a keyboard. Not saying it will be shit on a pad, just that, if it remains unchanged, it will probably be more comfortable for the majority of people with a keyboard. I think even people who prefer pads for FPSs will prefer k/m for RTS/strategy, am I right?

An Xbox is a PC..im an avid game player...not hardware fanboy.
Ill buy a PS3 if i think its worth it..or even a Wii.

At the moment..the PC is in decline..and i was forced to buy an xbox, why?
Well i cant afford 2000 pounds for a PC good enough to play Bioshock at the quality that i played it on my 300 Xbox 360 last night.
Fifa 08 will be next gen on xbox and not on PC..im not biased..i miss PC gaming..i prefer to play with a mouse and keyboard but am getting used to the controller.

The fact that companies like Epic and ID (fathers of gaming) are developing on consoles primarily (UT3 Rage) proves this. The fact that UE3 debuted on the xbox with gears of war..is enough to show the developers bias towards console gaming. And why not? PC gamers download pirated copies and cost the developers more money then profit.

Back to Bioshock...its amazing..really is...first time ive played a demo where the end product represtented the screenshots and videos (since Doom3). Even GOW didnt truly represent the screenshots and cut scene trailers..bioshock..looks and plays amazing..the control method is amazing..smooth right analogue looking..reminiscent of a mouse..the vibrations are superb (especially when you change for the first time)...sound is scary..woke the girlfriend up!! cant wait to go home and play it full blast!!

oh and i was playing it at 1080p etc etc...the framerate is amazing too!!
Its gonna be the benchmark for xbox!
  • captainrentboy #185 5 years ago

Wow, that was a bitch to download, it got to 97%, froze, and never moved on again, so I had to do it all again this morning.
But, it was worth it it, the game looks and feels like it'll be a stonker, graphics wise I think it hammers the 360's top dog, G.O.W, with ease, the city of Rapture looks like it'll be one of the most immersive and atmospheric environments ever developed.
And it was all pretty darned spooky too, those splicers are right bastards, popping up out of nowhere, wailing and screaming.
I think this has GOTY written all over it, but who knows?
I think it'll be one of the most rewarding single player experiences on the 360 this year, but longevity wise, Halo 3 will be the one, due to its corking looking multi-player.(Forge could be hella fun)
  • kangarootoo #186 5 years ago

I'm sure the download issues are all to do with everyone trying to grab the demo at the same time. I just it going last night, switched on the background downloading (such a simple but awesome feature) and it was done by the time I came to it the following day. Anticipation can be a bad thing I guess.

Whoever asked earlier if its scary, its pretty spooky but has nothing on Silent Hill. I reckon if you got through FEAR ok you should be fine with this.

My verdict, bloody awesome. The combat is slightly soso, but a game like this doesn't live or die on its combat the way something like Far Cry or UT might. The atmosphere was great, the features were great, the story looks promising. The combat in System Shock 2 was never amazing, but thats not why people loved it. Only a demo to go on so far, but as a spiritual successor to SS2 things are looking pretty promising so far.
  • EmiliasHorse #187 5 years ago

    Brilliant, Scary, wonderful, Joy.

Thats just the demo, System Shock 2 has returned.

I'm not downloading the demo. I'm waiting 9 days. If I download it'll kind of spoil it for me and I'll want more after trying it which will probably make the wait worse. Reading the comments it sounds like this could be game of the year as we're a fickle bunch. Oh joy!

Wow, the demo was amazing. Great atmosphere. Cant believe this thread is all about 360 vs PC. Sad. Both systems have their advantages, and their drawbacks. Just play the game. Its amazing.

Very very strong atmosphere and sense of place.

Some really nice set-pieces too (wont say what so as not to spoil for people)

The actual combat mechanics are pretty average but it doesnt really matter too much in a game like this I dont think.

One thing did really irk me about it though, and I hope that it will be covered in the full game although I doubt it.

I found not having any info or anything on the actual character you were playing to be really really weird and totally took me out of the game. I mean he crashes into the sea, goes underwater and meets all these crazy characters but doesnt say a word. He kills a man (granted a crazy one) within about 5 minutes but isnt remotely bothered. Upon stumbling across a large vial of plasmids, I as the player know I need them to progress but my character has no idea hwat they are yet he just whacks this stinking great needle in his arm and pumps it all in.

I just found having no knowledge of who I was supposed to be, to really break the atmosphere of the game.

I disagree. I do not want a complex back story on who I am, I am me and thats all I need to know or care to know. I want the story to be about Rapture and only Rapture. If my life is conected with events of Rapture I am happy to have a nugget or two added but in general I want to know zip about my character.

    WOW this game is unbelivable!

It soo immersive and the graphics are class above!

Best Demo I have ever played easily!

    @GamerG
Agree fully. Best demo ever by a long shot and from what I have read in PC Gamer and OXM reviews the main game is serious contender for best game ever title. Time will tell but I was 100% smitten by the demo.

    Fair enough.

I always like to have a character to anchor my actions to. Otherwise it all feels a bit disconnected to me. Even without a huge backstory, just some sort of sense of who you are would help. Is the guy an ex-soldior who is fine with killing folks, is he a religious man who will be wracked with guilt when he takes a life, is he just meant to be me? Having your character not speak or question why he should inject a massive vial into his arm etc felt really weird.

I think there might be a bit more backstory and development in the full game though, no? The demo is apparently not just the first hour or whatever, it's a montage of various bits, so the intro to the full game could well give you a bit more insight into how you find out about all these things.

    I'd hope, anyway.

Agree on the whole "I'll just inject this stuff into my arm" thing.. I was thinking err, what's going to stop me becoming one of these freaks. But also I'd like to know what happened, the discarded protest banners, piles of packed suitcases and party remnants are something that'll hopefully be filled in. Loved the old pathe style film reels and howard huges / citizen kane mold baddie.

Felt the demo didn't really show off the combat, wasn't left with a feel for whether it's more of a "system shock" or "system shock 2" which I tend to equate (unfairly?) with "deus ex" and "deus ex 2" my memory is that the originals in each case were superior in all but the graphics department. Wasn't easy to tell one type of splicer from another and after getting my own attack drone it promptly took on the automatic gun turret and got itself destroyed.. no "back off!"?

Also felt the scene with the big daddy would have scared me more if it didn't make such of meal of taking down that single lone splicer.. by that time I'd become quite passe about doing the same myself. ooh scary - is that all you've got? bring it on.
