Big Vanguard update next week

New starting area's nearly here.

Sony Online Entertainment's other fantasy MMO - no, the other other one - Vanguard: Saga of Heroes is on the brink of receiving a major revamp.

According to the official site, Game Update 6 will go live "as early as next week", which is a bottom-covering way of saying "next week".

Game Update six - which was first detailed back in July - will add a new starting area for the first ten levels, called the Isle of Dawn, and updated character models.

Plus there will be some fixes for those bugs that Vanguard is, unfortunately, so well known for. "Over a dozen pages of patch notes," say the developers, proudly.

We'll take a look at some point soon, and let you know how it's looking.

    "New starting area's nearly here."

Tut tut, who's proof reading here of late? It should be areas.

Actually, there's only one starting area, so to say "new starting area's nearly here" is correct because it's simply "new starting area IS nearly here."

Er, no it shouldn't. It's one area, not multiple areas. The apostrophe indicates the abbreviation of "area is".

(It says so much about Vanguard's position in the market that points of gammar are seemingly more interesting than the news itself.)

Okay, but it depends on how you interpret this line and what exactly EG meant. When I read it I took it to mean "New starting areas are nearly here", although I agree that it could be referring to a singular, in which case "New starting area's nearly here" is fine.

I haven't really read the article itself, which, y'know, might help.

EDIT - having tried reading the article and becoming overwhelmed with uninterest about this game, I will take your word for it. It does say a lot about the game though that all of the comments on this are simply us being grammar whores.

Actually, Vanguard isn't a bad game at all. Its just hampered by its bugs (still, though this patch might fix some of that) and by its little-compromise approach to the hardcore, traditional MMO gameplay.

This could turn it around for Vanguard

    Someone had to say it.

it's just the one starting area, an island, and separate from the main lands, presumably by a bridge with a lvl 80 troll under it preventing trial users from leaving the island starter area until they pay a subscription.

Not the best of timing, considering that WAR is out next week too. I mean, sure, all the bug fixes will be appreciated by the existing community but I thought the whole point of them putting in the new starting area was to try and attract new customers - customers that one would assume (if they are in the market for a new fantasy MMO) are going to have a sniff around WAR before this...

Was going to say that its about three months too late, but given the state of the game at launch I think its considerably more than a few months too late!

I'll take anyone in a grammar-off. Anyone. You hear? I'll beat you all down.

(Um, except Edge magazine's Tony Mott.)

Is Brad McQuaid the designer on this?

He collects Microman, so he can't be all bad.

Another soon-to-fail MMORPG gets an update that it's couple of thousand subscribers can enjoy on their nearly empty servers. Joy!

I'm sorry but if it ain't WoW, it ain't shit.

Vanguard has been a disaster but look at it this way - it's survived it's first year, and as a result I'm sure it'll survive for a few more years to come.

But after the beta, and all the initial problems, they'd have to send me a picture of a very very very hot chick in her undies playing Vanguard to get me playing it again.

Great to hear this will be available for all the folks wanting to try it out.

"Is Brad McQuaid the designer on this?"

He was, not sure if he is still. I used to play a lot of Everquest and so was fairly looking forward to this but the beta was an absolute shambles and I haven't played it since. I hope it keeps going enough to keep the dev team in jobs so they can have another crack sometime in the future but to me it's just quite a poor game. Sorry Brad!

Brad left in the very beginning...and the team working on it have been very devoted to making it the game it should have been. They have done a really good job and I whole heartedly recommend folks try it out for themselves.
