Big Surf Island costs a tenner News

Xbox 360 PlayStation 3 News by Robert Purchese

11 June, 2009

Criterion Games wants 1000 Microsoft Points (GBP 8.50 / EUR 10.20) for Burnout Paradise add-on Big Surf Island, or GBP 9.99 / EUR 12.99 from the PlayStation Store.

The expansion launches today on PS3 and Xbox 360, and opens a whole new area for Burnout Paradise, full of jumps, races, vehicles, challenges and much more.

Burnout Paradise developer Criterion has done a sterling job expanding Paradise City, and was recently confirmed as the studio behind a "revolutionary" take on Need for Speed - not Need for Speed: Shift or Need for Speed: Nitro, for those confused.

Will this mean an end to meaningful Burnout Paradise updates? We hope not. We'll try and find out.

Oh yeah. This, COD map pack AND Gunstar Heros makes me a very happy man. Indeed. I'm going to skip my Cuban salsa classes tonight for this.

So, you decided to skip Red Faction after all? I did. Lots of good xbla titles and DLC coming this summer. Currently enjoying playing Bionic Commando on the hardest difficulty. For once the hardest difficulty is extremely hard. I like it. Will take all month to complete it.

@myiagros: They already announced ages ago that they decided to charge for it (and release it a lot later - i.e. make it way bigger/better) and give the bikes patch and other updates free. Get over it.

Yes, I'm skipping Red Faction...for now. I was playing Mad World last night on my mates Wii and have decided to go for Prototype instead this Friday. RF didn't set me alight as it were. Same reason I didn't get Resident Evil 5. I'm sure I will at some point. Just got other games I want to play first.

I still haven't really forgiven Criterion for a) allowing people who pay for DLC to use it against those who don't (for example, the legendary cars) and b) allowing people to essentially pay to complete the game.

Both have ruined the multiplayer side of the game, developing a two-tier system of those who are all too willing and/or can afford the DLC and everyone else.

It's the disadvantage of pricing PSN stuff in real world currency, innit.

@Optimaximal: Is that a joke? What's the problem with allowing DLC cars play with people that don't have them? If anything that's more inclusive, no? Not that long ago that if a game released an expansion and you didn't buy it, you were completely locked out from playing against those people.

As for paying to complete the game, again, how so? The only splitting of userbase I've seen is the Cops and Robbers pack. And even then, it's not like the game boots the non-payers out, they just don't get involved in the actual game mode.

Sony charge devs/publishers for bandwith/space per download on PSN.

MS dont have to because of the £40 charge to us gamers.

This is certainly much better value for money than the previous packs, it's going to be pretty hard to resist buying it.

The "Ultimate Box" gets less and less ultimate as time progresses. Perhaps EA will send out stickers with "Pen" to go on the covers of the box for those who bought it and then release the true "Ultimate Box" later in the year?

Isn't that a bit like complaining about the Indiana Jones DVD boxset you bought years ago still saying "Trilogy", now that there's a fourth film out? =)

More of a comment that EA doesn't appear to understand what the word ultimate actually means.

In that case it makes the original trilogy set seem even more Ultimate :P

does this game have proper local split screen multiplayer yet? That was always the best thing about burnout and a crime it wasn't a feature of this game.

I am liking this very much, it injects some interesting humour in to the game, the level design is so much more playful.

I thought it amusing coincidence when I found a road called "Grange Hill", now I`ve found a bar called "Byker Grove", I think there is going to be a lot of fun sightseeing to do.

I actually found the framerate to be super smoother than normal but I've been playing a lot of Mass Effect so that could be it.

its a great little add-on, packed with shortcuts. The ski jump bit is great, the simultaneous jump challenge took us a couple of goes.
Awesome fun this one, am glad they put the extra effort in even if it took longer to be ready.
