Big Fable II announcement next week

Dev blog post sparks DLC rumours.

A mysterious post on Lionhead's development blog suggests a Fable II announcement is due "early next week".

The post, made by community manager 'Sam', promises some "good news for all Fable II fans next week", but there are no further details. In a related post the cheeky teaser also promises, "Next week we're announcing something that will make you want to revisit Albion. That is, if you're not already there..." Which could indicate something which would provide an extension of game-time.

Microsoft's being tight-lipped about the whole affair, claiming they'd be "hung, drawn and quartered" were the cat to escape the bag, so we're assuming it's quite big potatoes. The obvious answer would be some DLC - there are a few clues kicking around in the game's interface already and items are available from the Fable II puppet show web site - but there are other options such as patches or an expansion.

Our money is on some sort of DLC-flavoured treat, however, probably in the form of an item pack, clothing or character customisation. Bertie suggested that it could be a cat, possibly to ride your dog and keep it in order with the odd supercilious paw to the nose, but we're unconvinced.

Which brings us to the issue of pricing, upon which we shall defer to our learned friends at Rumour, Speculation and Guesswork. The Pub Games were priced at 800 MS points. This price, as with all DLC, was set by Microsoft rather than Lionhead, but it's probably a fair reflection of what will be charged for content attached to such a successful title.

Are you ready to reach into your wallet again so soon after buying the game first time around? We've developed very tender fingers of late, mostly in response to endlessly typing our PIN numbers into card machines across the retail spectrum, but Fable might just demand enough loyalty to squeeze a little extra from out beleaguered accounts. This is, of course, assuming that DLC is actually the subject of the announcement at all, but for the moment that's where the smart bets probably lie.

Thanks, Kotaku

Announcement reads: "We noticed interest in our game is waning. Please pay attention to our game again. That is all."

I've not got Fable II yet - well, I have, but the missus has secreted it away to a hidden fortress until Christmas, bah humbug. But I've heard it's quite buggy, so if it's a patch AND some sexy DLC, all ready and waiting for me post-Xmas, then I'll be a happy bunny right through the New Year.
  • Dizzy #6 3 years ago

Fable 2 can easily be kept fresh like Oblivion with new DLC areas every few months. I loved that about Oblivion. Make it happen Lionhead!

    >maybe a patch to get the game working!

    /yawn

    Whine whine whine.

    Airstrikes and 'unleash the dog!'?
  • h00zf1sh #8 3 years ago

Well, I WAS enjoying Fable II until it span my DVD drive so hard that I got the RROD!

Hopefully, when I get it back from Germany this week after a repair, I can start playing again.

  • groovychainsaw #9 3 years ago

£20, you can get the other half of the game!
    /Joking aside
I hope this is something good, and not just £1 for a new coat or something (says the man who got every extra item going in the run up to launch!)

Announcing an announcement is soooo stupid
  • Dark_Stranger #12 3 years ago

zzzzzzzzzz sorry feel asleep there, must be all that whining im doing, wearing me out. But personally I think i have a right to moan as I spent 20+ hrs of my life playing the game, only for it to break & unable to progress any futher without fully restarting. A good reviewer would have picked up on the multiple bugs, glitches that slipped though the development & testing phases.

Since Rockstar are proving elusive over their 'imminent' DLC maybe Lionhead will steal their thunder an be kind enough to provide us with Grand Theft Auto:Westcliff.
  • login_name #14 3 years ago

How about a quest to get my bloody dog back? I understand the whole sacrifice thing but still, it's a stupid idea to remove it permanently.
  • barchetta #15 3 years ago

On the broken game saves issues - can anyone copy their game saves as backups? I can only move mine to a memory card which seems bloody silly if you ask me. Maybe a Microsoft 'security' thing but annoying all the same.

On a brighter note, I can't say I've seen a 'major bug' as such but I'm only at the citadel so not sure how far into the game I am.
  • makeamazing #16 3 years ago

Considering the way DLC is going at the moment i suspect it will be two different coloured Dog coats and a new hat for £6 or something.

what about Halo armour or Elite light sword?
  • Markusdragon #20 3 years ago

Just patch the game already, guys. I don't like paying £40 for a game that doesn't work past a certain point even after restarting the entire game.

"Well, I WAS enjoying Fable II until it span my DVD drive so hard that I got the RROD!"

That's weird. MY XBox died 2 days after I brought Fable 2 home. Is there anything to this theory, or is it just a vicious rumor? Because now I'm hesitant to drop Fable II into my replacement XBox. Not that I'm dying to play it right at the moment, but sooner or later it's likely...
  • Cronan #28 3 years ago

Unless they're fixing about 300 nasty, game-breaking bugs for free, they can shove the DLC.
  • Fleisch #29 3 years ago

yeah they need to get the game working before releasing DLC, im not touching it again incase it deletes my saves! fix that and ill consider your DLC...

So, here's the way 360 games are working at the moment:

Pay £50 for a game that was obviously designed to be controlled using a mouse.
Play it using a joypad because you hate yourself.
    Buy the ending for £15.
Wait for the same game to come out on the PC, 4-6 months later, with mouse controls and free ending.
    Sell 360.

Seriously, mine's just for Guitar Hero these days. Buying console games is for mugs. Buying console games new is for... teacups?
Also, killing the resale market by making games cost 10+ quid over and above whatever you paid for them makes new games cost £65ish, or over $100US, depending on how fast the value of the pound is plummeting, is also killing the first-sale market, so that can naff off, too.
There's only even a second hand market because new console games cost the earth. I don't even have to consider whether to buy a new PC game, they're too cheap to care about, but at £[boot to the groin] per game, console games are a wholly different proposition.
  • migasUK #42 3 years ago

    @Frosty840

i bet not cheaper than a 360... pointless your comment!
  • Bulbatron #43 3 years ago

I loved Fable II until I stupidly chose the 'Sacrifice' Ending! I'd sacrifice two Spire's worth of prisoners to get my dog back! So I hope it is downloadable content that will enable me to get my dog back - without having to start another character.

And any other kind of expansion to Fable II would be great. It's just a shame that if I can't get my dog back, I won't be playing it.
  • #44 3 years ago

great another massive injection from the hype train that is PM.

  • bloke #45 3 years ago

A new quest to get your dog back would indeed be wonderful :-(

Did you guys skip the ending scene or something?

There may not have been much of a last boss (although that was wonderfully amusing) but there certainly was an ending. It wrapped things up nicely and still had enough foreshadowing to make Fable 3 interesting. That's still more of an ending than Fallout 3, Gears of War or Halo 2 have.

    @littlehamster

In Theresa's control, she played you like a pawn for the entire game

Also regarding sacrifice: it wouldn't be much of a sacrifice if you didn't lose anything ;)
  • SlackMaster #49 3 years ago

I had very few glitches during my first play through. I didn't like loosing my dog mind or the whole corruption idea.

I really thought the whole stuck in the spire chapter was rubbish. I know they needed a passages of time so Albion could change in your absence but still they could have thought of something else.
  • Vanmunt #50 3 years ago

maybe they will include a game with the dlc, or even a ending because I had real problems pressing the green button... I paid 40notes for the biggest pile of shit I have ever played... hate to say it but PM is a c**t and so are EG for giving the most hyped pile of shit ever a 10... rant f'ing rant...

goes back to LBP and GOW2... ahhhh thats better.
  • menage #51 3 years ago

Getting real tired of PC owners telling us how bad games are becoming and how their PC is so superior. I swear they're even worse than PS3 fanboys at the moment.

Go enjoy it then and leave console games threads alone.

Also "this game is crap", I don't give a fuck.

I would think it could have something to do with Avatars, with NXE arriving next week

    1. Use your avatar as your ingame character
    2. Avatar clothing attached to the game's achievements
    3. Download of avatar clothing

Would prefer the top two. Free is best after all
  • pinkpanzer #54 3 years ago

well my game spazzed out after about 15 hours - blank screens every time i tried to reload it. it's not fucking good enough if you're charging £40 for software this flawed and glitchy. I want my money back you cnuts.

  • Moribundman #55 3 years ago

Oh, its a bloody shirt for your new avatar or something... Look at the timing.

It's something to do with the NXE, and aside from the comment about "returning to Albion" I'd put money on it being something Fabley you can use on your dashboard (LH are Microsoft's bitches now of course).

I doubt it'd be something you can use in-game (certainly not avatar support - think how much effort went into the morphing character!). It may very well be something for the dashboard that you need to work your arse off in-game to "win" (kind of a reverse pub-games scenario).

Total mixed feelings about this... I sucked this game dry over the release weekend, barely sleeping, and did *everything* in 21 hours. Then I upgraded my HDD to a 120GB one in preparation for the new dashboard, and because the data transfer cable didn't work properly I had to copy everything I could onto a memory card and back onto the new HDD. Fable II's save didn't fit, and consequently I lost my merged pub games guy with all his gold and goodies and post completion save...

Now I can't be arsed playing through the game again from scratch (including the pub tourneys)... It's just grind grind grind to the next plot advancement, and playing good/evil is only superficially different (Wooh, people bug you because they are terrified of you, not because they are stalking you... Wooh, you cosmetically look satanic rather than angelic... Wooh you ruin one area of the map and the people in another love you to bits... It ain't as deep as it would like to be.

Just watched zeropunctuation's review on theescapismagazine.com and am increasingly coming round to his way of thinking. This is a great 8/10 game that sucked me in for a whole weekend, but to suggest it has the depth to return to for another go... I don't think so.

Fallout 3 on the other hand...
  • Moribundman #56 3 years ago

On the plus side, I *will* play it again from a HDD install. Maybe then I will be able to hear the game without the 747 idling in my drive tray... (Which is probably what has knackered those people's xboxes above)
