Big breasts aren't erotic, says Kamiya

Bayonetta creator Hideki Kamiya has dismissed suggestions that giant knockers are hot stuff.

That's according to reports floating round the Japanese internet, as reported by Kotaku.

"It's a huge mistake to think like an idiot that big breasts on women seem erotic," Kamiya is quoted as saying.

The statement seems likely to be a dig at his long-time rival, Tomonobu Itagaki, who is best known for his work on the Dead or Alive series and associated huge wobbling bangers. The two developers are often to be found taking a pop at each other - as back in 2008, for example, when they had a spat about Ninja Gaiden.

"I am bald, but I am not gay," Kamiya added, for undiscernible reasons.

He did have some things to say about his new game, such as: "For the opponent, dodging attacks is more humiliating than blocking them." Jolly good.

    I hope there will be a bit more pecs/'lunchbox'-related news though- I know EG prides itself as the no.1 portal for erogenous zone news for all genders (with the occasional bit about computer games)

    Anyway, I actually saw a video of this crappy game yesterday (that boring DF "look it's got more pixels!" stuff), have you guys seen this Bayonetta? It's basically a DMC/GOW clone with a naked woman (not all the time) used to sell to all the teens and pervy Japanese.

    That guy from Capcom certainly had a point about the Japanese games industry......

    Bit much, but he's right. I'm going to risk bemusing the majority of readers here, big breasts (and sweet baby Jesus in the manger, do I love them myself) are hot but big breasts in themselves are not necessarily erotic.

    It's the new console vs. console argument; how best to attract the sad one handed [Japanese] gamer market: motion controlled monster boob wobbling with poorly implemented simple harmonic physics, or low poly poorly textured badly proportioned partial nudity flashes. Perhaps Digital Foundry could work themselves into a hand shandy with some sort of waste of time tech comparison.

    Shame the Gaiden series is a shit load better than the DMC games (especially the more recent ones) and I imagine it will still be significantly better than Bayonetta, I was quite excited for it but I watched a fair amount of gameplay footage from the Jap demo yesterday and stylistically wise it looks EXACTLY like DMC and the combat system looks kind of clunky...

    EDIT: Also just to note: all boobs are lovely for the simple fact that they're all boobs and odds are they're attached to a women and if that woman is letting you see her boobs then you're probably just about to have yourself a lovely time.

    A fun little fact (or excuse) for you, apparently ALL men are actually programmed to look at breasts. Some studies were done years ago and men look at breasts even subconsciously. So fellas even those times you got blamed for looking when you weren't....you were! I can't remember exactly but it's something to do with looking for a good mate back when we lived in caves or something.

    Did you know the reason why the women stand behind the men in some mosques is to prevent the men from looking up their bottoms when praying? Makes sense when you think about it. It may not hold true in all of them though.

    This smells of bad translation. Maybe he meant erotic as classily alluring, as distinct from smutty, as DOA's wobbly tit sims are. Maybe it should say something more like "It's a huge mistake to think like an idiot that putting big breasts on female characters will make them appear erotic". As it is it doesn't even make sense.

    If that is what he means, I tend to agree, I can't say that physics tits have ever seemed more than "hey look we can do this with our physics engine too!" and are just another outlet for questionable taste regarding female characters in game design. In this respect Bayonetta certainly appears to be just as bad an offender, though. When games have tits that both look and move like the real thing, I shall start being impressed; when they have characters who are not designed specifically to be vehicles for their tits, or indeed their arses, I am generally far more impressed.

    Men are probably attracted to big breasts because they generally indicate three things: That the woman is past puberty, that she eats well (stacking up fat) and likely to have been pregnant (since breasts grow for the milk production). All of which indicate a mating potential.

    These days with breast implants and excess weight being a sign of bad health, mostly the puberty thing remains though.

    But everyone can probably agree that the breasts in DOA Xtreme Beach Volleyball 2 were just... weird.

    Partly right. We're essentially physiologically the same as back when we were living in caves, so it's just as applicable today as it was back then. Humans are rationalizing animals, not rational animals.

    Like a previous poster said, men value physical beauty because it's a reasonably dependable signal of fertility (women are fertile for a relatively short period when compared to men). Women look more for status as that's a reasonably dependable sign of being able to provide care/support for children (and as long as a man is not dead, he usually can produce offspring). That's why it's way more common to find old men with young women than the other way around.

    And the fact that men can get aroused by polygon females is basically a misfiring of our instincts. But as few of our ancestors wasted huge amounts of time and energy lusting for virtual females at the expense of creating offspring, there was no selection pressure to rectify this... ;)

    Actually Les, rather than a misfire it's quite natural for men to be aroused by visual stimuli. Sexual arousal for men is more visual than women, who are affected more by physical touch than visual. That's actually why men tend to prefer porn and sexual imagery (and I guess that covers polygon females!) more than women. So it's not we are all dirty perverts it's nature!

    I don't question that it's natural, it is. The fact that men are aroused by visual stimuli is because visuals give the best indication of what is important for men to be as reproductive as possible: the fertility of a female.

    But the mechanism has evolved to get men to have sex with real females as often as possible. The fact that this instinct is also triggered with photo's, video and games is a 'coincidence', a sort of misfiring, because it can lead to reduced mating opportunities with real females.
