BF1943 gets fourth unlockable map News • News • Eurogamer.net

Accessed by 43 million kills.

EA has announced that Battlefield 1943 comes with four maps, not three, but players will have to register 43 million kills to unlock the fourth.

Obviously that's 43 million kills as a group, rather than individually - although the number will have to be achieved separately by PS3 and Xbox 360 audiences.

Should this happen, players will then be able to access the Coral Sea map, in addition to Iwo Jima, Guadalcanal and Wake Island.

As must be obvious from the name, Coral Sea focuses on, er, aerial battles in a new "Air superiority" game mode. It's aeroplanes-only.

Battlefield 1943 is set to cost 1200 Microsoft Points (GBP 10.20 / EUR 14.40) on Xbox Live Arcade and USD 15 on PlayStation Network when it comes out, hopefully this month.

The PC version is due out in September.

I'd say it's probably more likely the 1943 aspect. Plus that's slightly less extraneous and morbid.

I wonder if this counter is the sum of all kills on all platforms. If so.. then it's going to take just about 2-3 days.

The important question is this: Will PC players have to kill OVER FORTY-THREE MILLION! soldiers to access the fourth map when our time comes in September?

its about 1 kill a second per server for battlefield games, maybe 500 servers for PC in the UK, assuming constant play 24/7 and full servers of 48 people... thats 43 million kills in the first day! so realistically the unlock should come within the first 3 days of release or so..

This had better be improved from the BF1942 Coral Sea... it was terrible. Two immobile carriers and no drivable boats meant that you'd often find yourself hitting the suicide button after being shot down onto one of the islands. A huge missed opportunity, as you always knew immediately where the enemy carrier was. Contrast with the Midway map where you had two task forces trying to locate the other and then close in to engage with warships, carriers, planes and subs.

Indeed, having to bail out of your plane and getting stranded on some deserted island or in the middle of the sea wasn't all that fun. If you were lucky there was an AA gun around close by. Then you could sit there staring at the sky until a bomb appeared in it and landed on your face.

Yeah, toss some naval warfare in there as well. A return of the drivable carrier would be awesome.

Pretty dissapointed by this, great idea doing a 4th free map but ridiculous that it's planes only. More or less a subgame within the game.

@VibratingDonkey: Yeah. If I was playing I'd try to rescue people. If you flew really low in a two seat plane and someone (preferably in the water) hit "get in vehicle" at just the right time, you could pick em up! Did you ever play Forgotten Hope? It had a far more detailed carrier, including an additional fighter spawn point in the hangar below deck. Alas, someone else had to operate the elevator to bring that plane up to deck (or you could lower the elevator, get in the plane, drive onto the elevator, get back out and in raise it again, then run up onto the deck to get into the plane)

If we have trouble reaching 43 million, they could introduce a WW1 "Battle of the Somme" mode, to get that kill count up.
