Bethesda makes Portal map News

PC News by Robert Purchese

6 November, 2007

Bethesda is so infatuated with The Orange Box that it has made its own Portal map.

The honours fell to level designer Daryl Brigner, who whipped out some rotating platforms and cobbled it all together in a presumably slow afternoon at work.

You can download the Ren Test2 map now for the PC version of Portal, although word is that it is incredibly difficult and some people have simply given up - despite it being described asvery innovative and fun.

But we will not stand for such nonsense here, as we expect each and every one of you to return triumphantly.

To install the map simply download it and unzip it to your "maps" folder in your "portal" directory. Then, when in-game, click on "Bonus Maps" and there should be a new category called "maps/RenTests" where you will find the Ren_Tests maps.

Great map, introduces some stuff Valve never did, like a giant rotating room.

Absolutely fiendish.

Valve will no doubt provide free maps for PS3 and 360, but I don't think you'll be able to get them from other sources.

"I regret to have to announce to the House that I may have inadvertently "misled" the Honourable Members regarding the existence of Cake."

Great map, got lucky for the third switch though, the walls didnt stop the energy ball and it just happened to bounce in the right place. ;)

What? Downloadable content for a console-toy? It'll never happen, mark my words.

Furthermore, I predict the current unpleasantness in the European trenches will all be over by Christmas.

To release it for PC, they just need to stick it on the internet somewhere.

To release it for 360 they would have to pay Microsoft to get it on XBL, so it's not gonna happen, or at least not for free.

Ingenious map, took me a little over 30mins to finish it. Now we just need Valve to return the favour & release a mod that puts the portal gun into Oblivion \o/

I like the sound of this, I reckon well regarded developers can learn a lot from each other by feckin' about with each others games.

Sony doesnt charge for download? Would be interesting if it do happen that PS3 will get the download but not X360!

In any event I doubt will be available for either and only for PC owners, same as any mods for Oblivion etc will always be for PC only (UT3 a rare exception?!)

yay i did it!

more... MORE... I WANT MMMOOORRREEEE!!!!!

My original plan was to get this on 360 but limited funds prevented me from doing so, so i paid 24.99 for the pc version. Im kinda glad i did now (sorry to rub salt into 360 owners wounds) although i do feel bad that i paid probably half the price of 360 owners yet i get more free content.

Great map, the rotating room is a nice touch and it really makes you think. I wish the actual game was this challenging.
