Bethesda hopeful of The Pitt fix today News

Xbox 360 News by Robert Purchese

25 March, 2009

Bethesda is hopeful that a working version of The Pitt will be available from Xbox Live Marketplace later today. The team was doing final checks on the content last night, according to the Bethblog.

The developer removed the corrupt Fallout 3 DLC file yesterday after Xbox 360 users reported seeing wacky in-game graphical glitches, such as floating exclamation marks. Bethesda told us the problem was localised to the English version of The Pitt.

The DLC costs 800 Microsoft Points (GBP 6.80 / EUR 9.60) and takes place in Pittsburgh, evidently. There's an abandoned steel yard full of enemies to explore, plus a Downtown settlement divided between slavers and slaves to investigate. There's even an enticing Raider infiltration mission to embark upon, as well as a spattering of unique items to seek and extra side quests to tackle.

Fallout 3 DLC, remember, is exclusive to Xbox 360 and PC. Incidentally, the PC version of The Pitt remains unaffected by this recent hiccup.

We'll post our thoughts of The Pitt soon.

This is good to know and perhaps I can get online and download this! Does anyone know if this has the experience cap fix in it as well or is that another update later?

the XP cap will change in the third DLC. Not this one.

I should really go back to F3...i never really got into it, even though most gamers tend to tag it with GOTY etc. I really want to like it, i do....but it didn't grab me so far. Maybe because i immediately rushed into the wasteland and found myself fending of hordes of enemies with little to no supplies and weapons.:-)

Yeah, just follow the main plot for a while and tackling side missions as you get 'em. Exploring early on is a guaranteed death. Still, don't expect the story to grab you too tight.

@DutchDemons - I am a massive fan of Oblivion and, like you, I was initially underwhelmed by Fallout 3 for the first eight or so hours. It had mostly the same framework as Oblivion so it was a clearly good game but the post-apocalypse setting made it hard to get into. It felt kind of depressing. Then at a certain point in the game, it just clicked and I've loved it ever since. I just couldn't stop playing it until I'd finished the main quest and that took me around 50 hours (with diversions). I completed it on the Xbox 360 and am now playing through a modded PC version with the DLC, IMO the definitive version. I'm enjoying it far more a second time if you can believe that.

For me this is my favourite game of 2008 but I do think it's a pot-boiler and that it isn't apparent just how good it really is from just playing it for a few hours. I don't know that it's better than Oblivion for me personally - I preferred the colourful fantasy setting more - but it's damn close and considering I rated Oblivion way ahead of most other games this generation despite its flaws, well I don't think I need to say any more really...

@Darren. yea, that's exactly how i felt...underwhelmed and i found the setting somewhat depressing. I preferred Oblivion as well. It's just the thought of having go through the dead and barren wasteland to guide some weird girl to a town with no weapons left (had to shoot my way through the uncoming hordes)...it just doesn't appeal. But my brother borrowed my copy and simply loved it...so i should really get back into it.

I'll try and level up, get some better equipment and plow my way through the main story and some side quests. Hopefully i'll rank this as one of my favourite games too (twas the reason i bought it in the first place)

@DutchDemons - You can change the difficulty on the fly so if you're struggling with the game I'd seriously suggest lowering the difficulty to Easy and playing it that way. Once you're comfortable with the mechanics then you can increase the difficulty which earns you more XP and thus you level up quicker.

I initially maxed out my character's strength as this allowed him to carry more stuff, including all the weapons I found. Any duplicates were used for repairs and extra ones were discarded. This way I found that it was hard to run out of ammo as any enemies I killed invariably left ammo for at least one of the weapons I was carrying.

Funny, I loved Fallout 3 from the get-go but struggled to get into Oblivion and never finished it. Ive often thought of going back and giving it another go, maybe I will now.

I have been told since, that it was a good idea to follow the main plot for a while in Oblivion which is what I did in Fallout at first so think will give Oblivion another go trying this. :)

@Darren.

i don't think it's the difficulty. my gut tells me i shouldn't have left the beaten path. I went to the megaton town, did some chores but felt bored and just ran away, ignoring the main plot (one of the reasons i LOVED oblivion). Then i was quickly outgunned and outnumbered and had to retreat into some random villages which were overrun by enemies as well. So i was forced to keep on fleeing untill the point where i now am. I'm somewhat of an oldschool gamer, so lowering the difficulty to win is 'not done' in my book:-).

But all this talk of F3 kinda makes me want to play it again, so maybe i will today.

I would love to play more Fallout but I have maybe one small quest left before I hit level 20 and then any further xp will go into a big sinkhole until the third DLC.

I think if you followed the quest you'd possibly struggle (especially the G'n'R bit), i wandered around looting weapons, ammo and exploring for ages first to level up a bit first. I'd recommend you go to megaton, disarm the bomb to get somewhere to store stuff, try the wasteland survival guide to level up a bit first. Springvale elementary a school near vault 101 was good for me- lots of easy to kill raiders with lots of nice stuff to loot. Super duper mart is also good for getting stuff and full of raiders-who even at low levels are reasonably easy to kill for xp to level up, certainly compared to super mutants etc!

I think it's a great game, so hopefully you'll get into it once you're a bit more levelled up.

The game isn't that hard starting out... Evading or escaping foes is pretty easy if you take your time exploring. And you can get incredible equipment (sniper rifles, assault rifles, laser pistols) for free within 10 minutes of leaving the Vault. Contrast Fallout 2 where you'd be several hours in before getting a gun at all, never mind a decent one...

@DutchDemons Thanks for that mate, think I'll download it and wait for the third DLC then before going back to it. Maxxed out to Level 20 and done everything in the game so far so I've thrown away bucketloads of potential experience :-( Couldn't help it though, just loved the game that much and if it's making you feel depressed then I think the developers have done a great job given its post apocalyptic setting. It's supposed to be a grim place to be... when is the next DLC out after this?

While it is depressing, the Fallout games have always tried to lighten the mood with witty banter or (given there's hardly any in Fallout 3) the jaunty music. If you want depressing, look up ancient post nuclear survival game Burntime. Oh, and how is this for an easy start: my next Fallout character is doing Anchorage as their first quest.

While I like both Fallout and Oblivion, I actually prefer Fallout for its bleakness and somber setting. There have been plenty of times when I’ve been exploring the wastes where the stark realization of the horrors of post nuclear war and barbarity of the remaining settlers has sent tingles down my spine…

There are millions of small touches that do this leading to lots of standout-haunt-you-forever moments, and none of them are in your face. Which is why so many people tout this as their GOTY. But the flipside to this is that you really have to invest in the atmosphere of the game, Its definitely a scratch beneath the surface type of game.

On saying that though, I really disliked Anchorage, but I have high hopes for The Pitt to reign it all back in for me.
