Beautiful Katamari demo rolls onto Live News

Xbox 360 News by Robert Purchese

30 January, 2008

Atari has rolled a Beautiful Katamari demo on to Live Marketplace.

Yes, the US had it months ago, but they also had the full game from October. Ours is not due to arrive now until March, after it slipped back from February yesterday.

The good news is you can very nearly play Katamari on 360 for the very first time, and it has better graphics and more things on screen and new challenges and online support.

The bad news is it feels more like a high-definition remake than full offering in the widely celebrated series. That which made the PS2 originals so bright and refreshing has remained stagnant here, resulting in being branded as a "fairly poor Katamari game" by our editor Tom.

Still a worthwhile venture for newcomers, mind you. Pop over to our Beautiful Katamari review to find out more.

I really wonder why it took so long, and why the hell it slipped. It's not the most advanced product ever.

Liked the demo though (the US one), but this is a 20€ max game for me.

I just hope it's not a full-price release.

I was puzzled at the headline, 'demo rolls onto Live', as was quite certain that I had already tried demo some times ago, ah did so on US marketplace! Yeah did not appeals that much to me as visually not so advanced on PS2.

Why the fuck has it taken so long?

Lucky I didn't like the US demo much, so I know I'm not missing out on much when I take the attitude of "stick it".

Is it improved in any way over the US version?
(Well, probably not, because namco would have had its marketing squad promoting the "new and improved" Katamari, but still: is it?)

Exactly - for newcomers. I didn't grab the PS2 games, and I didn't touch the PSP version because of the missing controls.

The 360 will be my first go of Katamari and I can't wait to download the demo.

The US Demo was from back in MAY.

Did they take 8 months to translate it from American to English?

Played this demo when it came out for the US folksies, and it's rubbish. I get the appeal of the mechanic, but this game seems like, well, crap.

DAN:SOLO - Correct. The OXM demo was ages ago. Don't understand why it has taken so long!

Demo's still not up.

No worries though, as I downloaded it from the US several years ago.

At least, that's what it feels like...

That makes the £40 a year worth while then.

What a bunch of muppets, I've never played a Katamari game before and I'm looking forward to this.

Couldn't see this last night, I guess the Silver member only thing explains it. What the hell is that about?

Can't really see myself buying this, anyway. I have the first two games, and while I do love them I don't really feel I'd get much value out of more of the same with slightly prettier graphics. Besides, the whole business of charging extra to "download" content that's already on the disc really rubs me the wrong way.

Apparently we're getting this game for £40 RRP over here, which is ridiculous given its critical reception (mostly 7/10 or less scores) and age (over six months after the US and Japan I believe). I'd have bought it at £20-£25 but I'm not paying the £35+ Play.com et al are asking for it.

A demo for silver members only, must be a mistake. I want the demo now!
