BBFC removes GTA IV info from site News

Xbox 360 PlayStation 3 News by Ellie Gibson

31 March, 2008

It appears the BBFC has deleted text from its website which gave details of the adult content in Grand Theft Auto IV, as reported earlier.

For those who missed it, here's what the text originally said (spoiler alert):

"GRAND THEFT AUTO IV is an open world action adventure game in which the player character is an Eastern European immigrant working for organised crime gangs in a fictitious city in the USA. The game has been rated '18' for strong violence, very strong language, very strong sex references and drugs use.

"Violence is a central theme of the game, with the character able to engage on missions which invariably involving killing in return for money and other in-game rewards. The character can gain use of a variety of weapons including machine guns, Molotov cocktails, a serrated knife and a rocket propelled grenade launcher.

"Injuries and death are shown with blood including blood projected onto nearby walls, windscreens and the camera lens. The character is able to attack and kill any other character in the game, including 'innocent' non player characters, although this carries a strong risk of being pursued by the police providing a negative consequence for such action.

"The game includes several uses of very strong language and frequent use of strong language. The very strong language occurs within 'cut scenes' in which the story and character development take place, in spoof television episodes and during a stand up comedy routine.

"Sex references also occur during cut scenes, including references to strong sexual behaviour. During gameplay the character can pick up prostitutes and pay for three different levels of service. What follows is an un-detailed portrayal of masturbation, fellatio and intercourse. The character can also visit lap dancing clubs and request a private dance. While the game contains sexualised dancing and the portrayal of sex, there is no sexualised nudity.

"Reference is made to drugs trafficking and several cut scenes portray cocaine snorting. There is also a satirical reference to the domestic production of a hard drug, but it does not contain the detail necessary to reproduce this in the real world.

"GRAND THEFT AUTO IV has been classified at '18' and is appropriate for adults aged 18 and above only."

Why have they put quotes around the phrase "cut scenes", as if my mum was talking about them?

Is it because the BBFC are still grappling with the mind-boggling concept of non-interactive cinematic sequences?

(not to mention struggling with the equally mind-boggling concept of dealing with confidential information from third parties)

Why is this in the MMO category? Is there something we should know about?

It's not in the MMO section for a specific reason, just a slight teething problem behind the scenes.

@nick_f:

It's because 'cut scenes' is not recognised lexicon. It's purely a gaming term. The quote marks are valid.

i like the term "cut scenes". it's a bit like "full motion video", purely a gaming term. if it extended outwards, i would expect my dvd to contain at least 2 hours of fmv! otherwise i would have bought the book of the film!

Bless the BBFC, apart from the Manhunt debacle, they are a decent bunch, and have become so liberal these days they might as well not exist. Gawd bless em I say.

Update: The BBFC has contacted VideoGamer.com explaining why the GTA 4 extended classification information disappeared almost as soon as it was published.

"We have taken this down because we have a policy which is that we will not put up the ECI for a work more than 10 days before the work is released. Due to a technical hitch we put up the ECI for GTA IV too soon. We will be putting up the full, unedited ECI on the 19th of April," explained a BBFC spokesperson.

lol Madafunkola, seems that was the only "new" thing in the list :( although would be nice one day to actually see the act, but maybe im just a perv. Everything else could have described any other GTA sadly.

Here's the key line parents ignore. Then they try and sue Rockstar when their kid goes on a killing spree.

Very few spoilers, if any, in there. Which I am kinda glad about. Nothing particularly unexpected and is only contains general references to violence and nudity - R* won't be happy but nothing has really been spoilt.

be interesting if this goes like manhunt 2 - i really hope not as I don't think you can even compare, but judging by the BBFC text it won't be long before some good for nothing politician will try and get it banned.

It can't "go like Manhunt 2" They've given it a rating.
The whole Manhunt 2 thing was because the BBFC refused to give it a rating.

Despite what everyone says they are very laid back about things . Look at the whole Hot- Coffee fiasco, The BBFC basically replied we rated it 18 for violence so the fact its got a bit of sex in...no problem.

fair point - though i'm sure it will still kick off in the media, i guess it will help with marketing for Take Two and Rockstar.
