Bayonetta tops busy Japanese chart

How sabbath that?

Bayonetta has stormed Japan and taken top chart honours on PS3 and seventh place on Xbox 360.

It's been no picnic. The SEGA and PlatinumGames creation had to fend off hot competition from Final Fantasy Gaiden: Four Warriors of Light (DS), Tekken 6 (PS3) and Persona 3 Portable (PSP) in second, third and fourth.

The arrival of strong titles on Sony platforms helped the PS3 and PSP overturn the Wii and DS in Japan. Sony's duo combined to sell 100,081 units (64,020 on PSP, 36,061 on PS3), while Nintendo's pair shifted 73,307 units (44,419 on DS, 28,888 on Wii).

Previously dominant champion Pokemon Heart Gold/Soul Silver was unseated, then, and pushed to fifth ahead of Wii Fit Plus in sixth, Tomodachi Collection in eight and Inazuma Eleven 2 in ninth.

New Wii entry Super Robot Taisen NEO rounded the top flight off in 10th. Tekken 6 (360) just missed out in 11th, as did GTA: Chinatown Wars (DS) in 16th.

    Finally some Clover/Platinum recognition.

    I played the demo this weekend again, and I fucking loved it.
  • M4RV #2 2 years ago

    I still wonder how come every time "Platinum" releases a game, they always mess something up... The PAL version of MadWorld lacked 60hz support, while the PS3 version for Bayonetta, from a technical standpoint, is underwhelming. Still waiting for Infinite Space tough. :))
  • menage #3 2 years ago

    Platinum didn't handle the port of the PS3 version, and underwhelming is a bit of an overstatement,

    But I'm buying this for the 360 as well.
  • Widge #4 2 years ago

    The PSPgo accounted for 50% of the PSP sales, not bad for just the one day of sales.
  • markymark22 #5 2 years ago

    The 360 version of tekken 6 did quiet well considering the ps3's dominence.
    Whens the new final fantasy out over there? That'll be a bumper week for the ps3!
  • M4RV #6 2 years ago

    @menage:

    Platinum didn't handle the port of the PS3 version (...)

    Your point being...?!

    (...) and underwhelming is a bit of an overstatement (...)

    Having played both demos, not really... It was a terrible port, one that after having the PS3 on the market for three years, is embarrasing to say the least.
  • Widge #7 2 years ago

    New name? Did you get unceremoniously removed or something?
  • menage #8 2 years ago

    @M4RV

    Well, they didn't fuck it up now did they. Sega did. Not really Platinums fault then.

    Second point. Maybe, I only watched some videos and played the PS3 version. Didn;t see huge problems apart from some stuttering backgrounds. Maybe I just don't care enough to get excited about it though.

    Obviously the japanese dont know about how superior the 360 version of bayonetta is and blindly stick to a national console maker

    There's more PS3's in homes than Xbox360's, which part of that is blindly sticking to a console?
  • M4RV #10 2 years ago

    @menage:

    I guess it depends on your point of view really... As far as I can remember, SEGA's history with the PS3 is not exactly brilliant, which is why I believe they both fucked up. Platinum Games, for not being able to handle said port, due to whatever reason and SEGA, for not being able to properly develop a next-gen title on PS3 hardware.

    Bayonetta (360 version mind) got the highest possible score in Famitsu magazine. They dont give away top scores the way many western mags and websites do. I love japanese hack and slash adventures so this is right up my alley. I believe the PS3 version is still a very good game even though it clearly is inferior. Buying a 360 to get a better version of Bayonetta is a stretch but remember you get better versions of most other multiplatform titles as well.
  • menage #12 2 years ago

    Since I got both consoles I will buy the 360 one. But I really did n;t have that much issues with the PS3 version. hell I even prefer the pad for games like these most of the time, although that doesn't really bother me as well.

    I just want the bloody game now instead of in January where it's put up against Darksiders, Dante, etc..I really haven't got shit to buy this year, fuck MW2.
  • cianchristopher #13 2 years ago

    Well, it's a fact that the Japanese market is ridiculously inward looking - and foreign platforms and titles never really do well over there!

    IN a previous "Top 100 games of all time" voted for by the readers of Famitsu - only 1 game on the list was Western (GTA Vice City). Only 1.

    They actually think that 99 of the top 100 games ever are Japanese! That says a lot about them! An awful lot!
  • muscleblade #14 2 years ago

    Fiat is the best selling car in Italy but nowhere else. Same goes for Volvo in Sweden. Japan has always been the top console manufacturer so for the japanese to suddenly start buying american consoles would be strange and farfetched as well. The few japanese that owns a 360 is very happy they bought one no doubt. It is the best console this gen even if its not made in Japan.
  • Widge #15 2 years ago

    Different countries in having different buying trends SHOCKER!
  • MeBrains #16 2 years ago

    muscleblade: "The few japanese that owns a 360 is very happy they bought one no doubt. It is the best console this gen even if its not made in Japan."

    no it is not and they might not be?!

    why the hell do you state "360 is the best" as fact? we are 4y on this gen and we are still discussing about it. doesn't that _fact_ alone show that yours is incorrect? uhboyz. :nono:
  • muscleblade #17 2 years ago

    @MeBrains

    The reason for this is the many PS3 only owners that claim the PS3 is the better console wihout actually ever holding a 360 controller or played a 360 game on Live with friends. People that owns all three current gen consoles think the 360 is the best overall from my experience. Strange thing really. If you dont have experience with all three consoles your opinion isnt valuable imo.
  • menage #18 2 years ago

    I pretty much think of them as equal at this point. Although the PS3 was my favorite this year with some exclusives having my preference.
  • muscleblade #19 2 years ago

    @menage

    I think the PS3 is getting a lot closer considering the great exclusives but the online service is lackluster compared to Live even if its free and i dont like the controller but thats subjective i guess even though most people i know agrees.
  • menage #20 2 years ago

    The controller sucks for FPS (and maybe some sim racers), but I prefer it for fighters and such. the rest, well, they really don't make much difference for me. Online I don't use much, heck Uncharted 2 is the only game I actually played online this year (not counting Demons' Souls or some fighters of course).

    PS3 online doesn't suck, it just depends on the one hosting the servers. Sometimes it does, but most of the time it's fine. Unless you're talking about party chat and such, but I don't use that kind of stuff.
  • makeamazing #21 2 years ago

    I wish old donnie was here... I missed his "PS3 is doomed" comments.
  • muscleblade #22 2 years ago

    "Unless you're talking about party chat and such, but I don't use that kind of stuff"

    Well yes i meant that. I like to mix my gaming with being social with friends. Sometimes its nice to play a game all by yourself but my best gaming moments is in coop or competition talking with friends in a party. In other words the party system is a must to me.
    I also like to compare achievements and such while im at work (dont tell anybody). And i love the Halo franchise.
    But i think your opinion count as you have both consoles anyway. Your just another type of gamer than me i guess.
    For fighters i use a Fighting stick of course. The PS3 controller is a piece of crap imo.
  • muscleblade #23 2 years ago

    L4D2 will probably be GOTY for me. Without xbox Live it wouldnt make it in the top ten. Social Gaming FTW.
  • muscleblade #24 2 years ago

    "I wish old donnie was here... I missed his "PS3 is doomed" comments"

    donnie did atleast own both consoles. The PS3 only owners (those that give me negative feedback :-)saying their machine is as good as (or better????!!!!)the 360 dont have much credability as they really dont know.

    Did you buy a PS3 muscleblade?
  • Steroyd #26 2 years ago

    Neither console is out and out the best definitively though.

    The Xbox 360 and PS3 just shade each other year on year, me I would personally tip in Sony's direction because I like their 1st party games more, some prefer Microsofts 1st party efforts.

    Multiplatform games have been getting better on the PS3 to the point, where it's not even worth arguing anymore, with the odd egg of a multi format game tipping in either consoles favour (more likely to lean MS's though).

    where the goddamn hell is sin and punishment 2? i bought that shit on LAUNCH DAY, instead of bayonetta, and it appears only 5000 or so of my fellow residents followed suit, despite it being utterly flawless and treasure's first proper game since the equally flawless bangai-o spirits GAHHH

    bayonetta does look good though, i guess
  • Widge #28 2 years ago

    Multiplats had got similar, until all of a sudden there has been a glut of low grade faff.
    Ok, a lot of them are low grade games, but its a shame when it happens to something anticipated like Bayonetta.
  • muscleblade #29 2 years ago

    @El-Dev

    I bought one at release. I traded it in later though. My nabour however didnt. He doesnt play games much at all but likes to have everything just to have it. Thanks to him i have played some PS3 games over at his house lately and even though games like Uncharted 2 looks great i dont feel it plays as good as it should. And dont get me started about the online service. Its a joke compared to what the 360 has. Its getting better for the PS3 but both me and my nabour can agree that the 360 is the better of the two. I do love the Gears and Halo franchises but didnt enjoy KZ2 and Uncharted 2 as much as i thouth. Something is wrong with the controls and the setting. Batman AA is my favourite PS3 game so far this year. Too bad its not an exclusive and that the 360 version is better. That is all.
  • muscleblade #30 2 years ago

    Looking forward to the face off regarding AC2 and MW2.

    @tachikoma

    Platinum isn't really a Capcom size company, maybe they just didn't have the resources to pull it off. I wouldn't call someone a fuck up because he isn't able to do something which is out of their hands.

    If the port really is inferior Sega shouldn't have released it until it was up to scratch.
  • Pac #33 2 years ago

    @muscleblade

    Demons souls and Uncharted 2 are two of the best video games of this generation. So despite the fact that the 360 has the best online experience at the moment I don't think that there is definitive winner.

    Not having a go , but I am not sure that someone who traded in their PS3 is the best person to judge which is currently the best console (and this is coming from someone who owns 2 360s).
  • menage #34 2 years ago

    Well, one simple reason (among others), Japanese generally don't give a flying f about graphics.
  • Calgon #35 2 years ago

    "Demons souls and Uncharted 2 are two of the best video games of this generation."

    They are *your* best not *the* best...

    To be honest I must be missing something with Demon Souls, the graphics can't be the main focus point(not that they are terrible but hardly stand out as far a this gen goes) and the gameplay looks pretty standard... infact from what little I did see it left me cold.

    Uncharted2 is more like it, would be a must buy if I had a PS3 but best of this generation is going a bit far IMO.

    Thats the point though, differing opinions... not just your own or any select reviewers you'd like to mention. None of us really have the right to say anything other than what we *beleive* to be the best, not attempt to define whats *the* best for everyone else, how self important are gamers getting these days where they dont see what's wrong with that? Same goes for gamers on the other side of the coin claiming some of the most popular titles for their least favourite console are overrated and "teh crap".

    edit: I see read that quote wrong when I posted this originally, so you can disregard that part of the response if thats not how you meant it.

    My question would be if you only played the PS3 version like myself and did not know anything about the 360 version would you have any complaints. From my experience with Bayonetta on the PS3, it is a fun game and I enjoyed it a lot. Yes, I have a 360 and will purchase Bay for the 360 but even so, I am only doing it because the word is that the 360 is the better version.

    Even today you cannot blame a developer for lack of parity between the 360 and PS3 Unless they already have PS3 and 360 games to build on. The fault still belongs to Sony for creating a complex piece of hardware and not providing developers the resources, tools and documentation they need to leverage the system. This will continue to be an issue as more developers try to come out with games on the PS3 and find that their is still a world of hurt in getting up to speed on the hardware.
