Battlestations DLC tomorrow

New map, mission, units.

The war in the Pacific just got a little larger, as Eidos has announced downloadable content will be available for Battlestations: Midway on Xbox Live tomorrow.

One new multiplayer map, Battle of the Sibuyan Sea, is included, alongside a new single-player mission, Raid on Truk.

You'll also be able to wreak havoc in five new playable units: the Iowa-class (Battleship), Shimikaze-class (Destroyer), Lockhead P-38 Lightning (Fighter), Nakajima J1N1 Gekko (Fighter) and the Type A Minisub (Submarine).

A big slice of war to cheer up a miserable week, then.

Battlestations: Midway was released on PC and Xbox 360 at the beginning of February and places you in the middle of the war that raged in the Pacific Ocean towards the end of WWII, from the famous Pearl Harbour bombings up to the Battle of Midway itself. You can take control of over 100 units including fighter planes, warships and submarines as you attempt to blow the enemy to smithereens.

Kristan's reliving the battles as we speak, so expect his thoughts on the game very soon indeed.

Are they kidding us? Wasn't this game just released? That content had better be free because from all purposes it looks like it was held back from the game just for this.

Nope, from what I've read, it's going to be 600M$ Points, and there's plenty more to come...

i do love this game, it is excellent once you get the hang of it... but its as short as shit in SP and most of the MP maps are uninspired, although still good fun... i would say that this close to its release, asking 600 points for this content is taking the piss... IMHO.

    @matrim83

A game's content is usually fixed when it reaches alpha, which is 1 or 2 months before beta, which is 1 or 2 months before going gold, which is a few weeks before hitting shelves. So I'm not sure what your point is?
  • moggsy #5 5 years ago

    @ Veldaban

But won't there be a similar lead time for this extra content?
  • Veldaban #6 5 years ago

Surely beta-testing the extra content isn't going to take as long as the entire game? And it doesn't have to be pressed on discs.

Looking forward to the EG review of the full game...
  • Moogrose #8 5 years ago

yes yes... the point for me is not only when the content is coming (so close to release) but the amount of points attached to said content so close to release (and for a one SP map and one MP map and some new war machines)...

even 400 pnts would be more reasonable considering...

i'd also imagine that this may split the MP game again into those who have it and those who don't, which also strikes me as odd, again - so close to release.

How about fixing what's broken, first? Like a checkpoint save system for the campaign?
  • matrim83 #10 5 years ago

    @ Veldaban

The point that I am trying to make is that they probably withheld this just to sell it as DLC. If you really believe that this content would not have been in the original game had there been no marketplace to use it as DLC you are a bit naive.

If the same content had appeared six months from now I could possibly buy the fact that they had made some Add-on stuff. But to put it on the market while the game is still in its first month just screams that the content was developed with the game and not after the game finished.

    @UncleLou

    indeed

    +1 and all that...

They probably will have developed this at the same time, but already taking into account that they will be able to sell that content extra - so the fact alone that it was developed alongside doesn't mean it would and should have been in the full game. They simply might not have developed it at all without the possibility of DLC.

They've shot themselves in the foot with this, maybe there trying to make something back on all the extra time its had in development??

I don't care, i actually really enjoyed this, but took it back to the shop with it being too short!

This smells almost as bad as the 'extra' tracks in Gotham 2

I tend to think the problem here is that BSM was already very light on content ( 4 hours SP, not that many MP maps ), charging for additional content seems to take the piss if you ask me.
  • UncleLou #15 5 years ago

Fair enough, I guess - I don't know how the single-player mode is as I stopped playing it due to the lack of checkpoints. But I am repeating myself. ;)
  • sharky_ob #16 5 years ago

I've only played the demo of this, but I can safely say Crackdown is brilliant, with positive comments from virtually everyone I know who's played it. BSM seems a bit so-so, I think it's got to be Crackdown.
  • Gl@eken #17 5 years ago

I have both and Crackdown is far better. Of course they are completly different types of game though.

Midway is good but the single player is way too short. If you don't have Midway yet I would recomend picking it up once it gets in the bargin bins.

pound for pound I have had more enjoyment from battlestations. Depends if you like the flight sim type world or platformey jumping around.

This DLC has now been postponed until later in the month apparently...
