Battlefield Heroes Hands On

PC MMO Hands On by Oli Welsh

20 May, 2008

Page 1 of 2. Page 2 ->

You know that it's going to be free. You know that it's a stripped-down, knockabout deathmatch shooter built on Battlefield's sturdy chassis. You know that it looks terrific, like an animated propaganda poster for a war in a fancy-dress shop. You know that it's not evil. But did you know that Battlefield Heroes is secretly an MMO and almost an RPG?

No, really. Bear with us.

The first clue is the action bar at the bottom of the screen. As well as switching and deploying weapons, these buttons provide access to very RPG-like skills and buffs that do things like increase run speed, defence, or accuracy for a short period of time. They promote prolonged shoot-outs that blend twitch-gaming skill with an accelerated tactical see-saw. Not entirely dissimilar to the feel of player-versus-player combat in World of Warcraft, in fact.

But if that sounds off-putting, it shouldn't. Developer DICE made the decision for quite the opposite reason; to make the whole deathmatch experience less intimidating.

"We wanted to have it so you didn't die so much," says lead designer James Salt. "We looked at the Battlefield 2 experience where you spawn in and, as a new player, you're dead in a couple of seconds. And then there's fifteen seconds of waiting before you're in again. We wanted to clear this up. So we've made it so it's quite hard to shoot each other and kill each other."

Hence the skills, a delicate balance of cool-downs and effect cancellations that can be deployed against each other, taking the emphasis off raw headshot skill. "It adds like a different level of rock paper scissors," says Salt. "You've played this card, you've got this shield up, and I know you've got 30 seconds before you can use that again. I guess it's like how you have those combat situations in an MMO."

Young man, there's a place you can go.

In a happy half-hour spent playing the game, we confirm what he says. And it's not merely about deploying skills. It simply takes a lot of bullets to make someone fall over. Make no mistake, this is much more than just a cut-and-shut respray of Battlefield - the game has been completely rethought and rebalanced for a new audience and a new playing style. DICE might be making light of war in Battlefield Heroes, but underneath the cartoon insouciance (the war between National and Royal Armies is a dispute over a sporting result), it's deadly serious.

Case in point: DICE stopped with the introduction of buff and debuff. Those abilities can be upgraded and modified using tokens earned by completing missions (achievements, in other words). "But there are less tokens than there are ways to spend them, so you have to decide, am I going to go wide, or am I going to go deep, which I think is going to be kind of interesting," says Salt. It's a talent tree by another name, permitting you to customise more than just your character's costume and load-out.

So far, so RPG. EA and DICE have clearly woken up to the fact that character persistence, advancement and customisation is the key to hooking players on online games - especially if you want to convince them into spending money on trinkets for those characters. They aren't alone - Infinity Ward took similar steps with Call of Duty 4, leading Rob to argue that it verged on MMOdom itself. Battlefield Heroes goes a few steps further down the road marked massive, but here's what makes it really distinctive; it doesn't do so in the games, restricted to 16 players at present. It does so on its website.

'Battlefield Heroes' Screenshot 2

I said, young man, when you're short on your dough.

The Battlefield Heroes website doesn't just launch the game, and host the advertisements and item micropayments that will turn a profit from it. It's home to the character creation and customisation interface, and a profile page where you can view and manage your mission and friends lists. There's even an events feed that lets you know what's happening in the game universe, and the chance to browse other players' profiles and examine how they've specced their characters. And there's the metagame.

"It's kind of like cheap Risk," says Salt. You pick one of sixteen countries to fight over, and every match you play puts points in the pot to claim territory for your army. The map fills up with red and blue, and whichever side has more territory at the end of the week receives more "valor points" (in-game money). That's it - for now. "We've got a lot of other plans for it, but before we get really cute with it and add on loads more complexity, we just want to put it out there and see what people do."

Sounds like an interesting concept. Don't know if I'll like the game, since I might be too used to BF 2, but I sure will try it.

Awesome, can't wait for this - finally an online shooter that does something truly different, and one with an interest in pleasing the general punter - and not so competitve uber-twitch kiddy.

I hope.

As a general rule if the graphics don't look particularly advanced you pretty much say that any PC from the last 5 years will run it.

Well, I think they were already "awake" when Battlefield 2 came out.:)

It's also a pity DICE still hasn't recognised the best bit about PlanetSide, namely the big battles (399 people on one map=online FPS heaven). Good thing they want to add more complexity/depth to that persistent war though, just a map with changing colours every day and a reward at the end of the week/day isn't gonna cut it in the long run.

Only play FPS's at work over lunch anymore, online ones just don't appeal. Hopefully we can get enough gamers to play this, TF2 died down too quickly :-(

Good to get some more information on this besides the hilarious trailer, sounds like my concerns over longevity were unfounded if it's going to have achievments and a persistant campaign mode from the start.

I can't wait to give this a shot. I'm intrigued though, will you consider paying money for extra stuff in this game? I must confess that, if I play this enough, I'll be tempted to drop a little cash on extra costume parts and the like.

If they weren't charging for this I would probably be accusing it of ripping off TF2 by now.

But they ARE charging for TF2, which brings me to a moral dilemma in deciding which one is worth the asking price more.

This is the mmorpg of the future...Imagine, like TV, a dozen different games of this style, paid for by ads and vanity...A "channel" of a game to suit any mood, all free.

I'd say I've just jumped on the captalism happy-face distraction band wagon, but me thinks I've been riding on it my entire life.

Woohoo! Go Tomorrow!

meh this article has put me off. i'd rather have a more skill orientated game. if i shoot someone in the head i want them to die!

it's not my fault some people are crappy. maybe instead of making it easier for everyone, they should encourage people to practise more

@r3n this game isn't aimed at you then if that's your opinion of the game. It is aimed at the casual person who only wants to play for a few mins to an hour or so every day or people who just want a quick bit of fun. Not people who play for 12 hours everyday for 3 years just so they can shout "chek out my 1337 skillz".

@r3n: Then go back to playing Counter-Strike and its stupid aiming system that doesn't reward you for aiming at the other player, it rewards you for aiming away from him instead. Then don't forget the 1 hit kills, and that sort of game is dull, dull, dull.

This sort of game sounds a bit more tactical and a bit more for the rest of us who just want a quick fun game that we don't have to practice at to enjoy. If I wanted to practice at something, I'd take up a real sport/join the army.

So? You think it'll be the only free online metagame there is? There are enough examples of online games that did exactly this kind of thing, whether they were free or not, and it always remains the same: if it's only some regions changing colours and no long-term goals/consequences then people won't care for it.

So if you want people to play this in short bursts, why are you making it harder for players to kill each other? It sounds exactly like so many badly-thought-out games I've played where common rules like "headshot=kill" just don't apply, especially if they insist on all these MMORPG bells and whistles, bubbles and cooldowns and buffs/debuffs and all that. R3n pretty much feels as I do here; my idea of a quick bit of fun does not involve shooting at people much more than I logically ought to have to. Gun => bang => hit => dead is the way a game about shooting ought to work. Don't get me wrong, the basic idea has legs, a pick-up-and-play action game that's built for low-end PCs is a great concept, I just feel the execution sounds awful. And I'm not defending CS, their aiming model has its own horrible problems, as does the balance and in-game economy.

I hope this works out if only to make people more aware that games designed for older machines are not necessarily a bad idea, in fact they are potentially very lucrative. I'm also interested to see how the economy develops; if I were really into a game, I think I'd be willing to part with cash for cosmetic extras, everyone loves a character creation tool after all.
