BAFTA shortlist revealed for public vote

Batman? Uncharted? FIFA? You decide.

The shortlist for the BAFTA GAME Award of 2009 has been announced, and you lot decide who wins.

This is the only award to be voted for by the public, and the titles range from multi-million seller Modern Warfare 2 to people's favourite Uncharted 2 and Eurogamer office favourite FIFA 10. Or perhaps you like Batman: Arkham Asylum.

Last year over 60,000 people voted for the award, and Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare was crowned as winner.

Get voting on the official BAFTA Game Award website. The results will be announced at the glitzy BAFTA ceremony on 19th March.

Comedian Dara O'Briain is hosting the event and he actually likes games don't you know. "I am delighted to have been asked back to host the GAME BAFTA's for the second year running. It's an honour to acclaim the very real people whose creativity, innovation and wit produce such amazing virtual worlds," he said, not making any jokes.

The full list of GAME Award nominations is as follows:

  • Assassin's Creed II (Ubisoft/Ubisoft Montreal)
  • Batman: Arkham Asylum (Eidos/Rocksteady Studios)
  • The Beatles: Rock Band (EA/MTV Games/Harmonix)
  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (Activision/Infinity Ward)
  • FIFA 10 (EA/EA Canada)
  • Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars (Rockstar/Rockstar Leeds)
  • The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks (Nintendo/Nintendo EAD)
  • Street Fighter IV (Capcom/Dimps)
  • Uncharted 2: Amongst Thieves (Sony/Naughty Dog)
  • Wii Sports Resort (Nintendo/Nintendo EAD)

I'm almost tempted to put money on Uncharted 2. As it's decided by vote though, and not technical merits or gameplay, it'll probably be COD:MW2 unfortunately. :/

    What a crap list...
  • myiagros #3 2 years ago

I voted for Uncharted 2, but unfortunatley the pretty vanilla COD:MW2 will probably win.
  • Widge #4 2 years ago

    Public vote? Modern Warfare then...
  • towser #5 2 years ago

    Wii Sports Resort of course!

    ...

    Just kidding.

Batman:AA gets my vote. Fuck tons more innovation and originality than any of the others in my opinion.
  • mandella #6 2 years ago

    Shitty list. Where's DA?
  • 00.00.01 #7 2 years ago

Just voted Uncharted2, enjoyed that last year. Good story, fantastic graphics. If MW2 gets that BAFTA it will be the biggest scam of 2009/2010 with it's global big-mouth-see-me release followed by a community that slags the game for being full of bugs.
2,5 months after release, patch 1.08 is released (resulting in people not being able to play the game on- and offline !!) and no communication to players whatasoever. Soooo overrated.
  • GundamJehutyKai #8 2 years ago

2 horse race. I want uncharted to win, just like how it won GOTY awards from so may critics, but since this is a public vote, it's going to be MW2...
  • IneptPercy #9 2 years ago

Uncharted will get it, all Sony Fanboys will vote for it while all other gamers votes are split accross the rest.
  • Zomoniac #10 2 years ago

At least they've populated the list entirely of games from 2009, unlike the 2008 list that was made up largely of games from 2007 (COD4 included).
  • bad09 #11 2 years ago

Bats got my vote. I have started UC2 but it hasn't exactly swooned me the way it has others but I've not got far in to be fair. Amazingly beautiful but just not grabbing me like yet like UC1 did.
  • Golgo #12 2 years ago

I voted Uncharted 2 because I'm an inveterate Sony fanboy, clearly, and not because it's in any way a fabulous game. Currently basking in the fanboy glow of my Uncharted 2 wallpaper reward.
  • Murton #13 2 years ago

I have to echo the above, Uncharted 2 is the better game in just about every measurable way and deserves the win, but as its a public vote we're probably going to see MW2 win unfortunately.

These sorts of high profile awards should be granted by a panel of judges who are experts in the field and know what they're talking about rather than being based on the opinions of fans who don't. I for instance have only played 2 games on that list enough to have formed an opinion on them and I'm certain I'm not alone there, how many people in this public vote will have played all 10 games to know which they like best and make a properly informed vote.

  • Fletche #15 2 years ago

No Borderlands to pick from, which after extensive play in 2010 became my favourite game of 2009 ahead of UC2, so had to vote UC2.
  • KDR_11k #16 2 years ago

What the hell? Why Spirit Tracks and Wii Sports Resort with no New Super Mario Bros Wii in sight? The few games I own from that list are not ones I'd vote for.

  • metalmike25 #17 2 years ago

Has to be Uncharted 2. Made most of the games released last year look shit in comparison. Might not win though as these awards are voted for by the public.
  • 52pickup #18 2 years ago

I voted Uncharted 2. Amazing game, with great quality not only in graphics but character development and story too.
  • Sunyavadin #19 2 years ago

    This list makes me cry.
  • HandOfBeadle #20 2 years ago

    FIFA?!?!? Aargh...
  • curtlikesmeat #21 2 years ago

That list does seem kind of bland, who picks it? I'd vote for uncharted. Having spent a bit of time with Dragon Age now I can appreciate EG's review but I don't agree with it and I think it deserves a mention. This category should be called "big games that we all know about, which are mostly incremental Improvements on the year before's version and were... ok".

Since EG always go out of their way to mention how much they like Fifa 10 I feel I have to mention in every comment I make how shit and over rated it is.
  • DuTraveller #22 2 years ago

towser i agree with u: BatmanAA is more original. My vote to it
  • The_Inquisitor #23 2 years ago

I gave Street Fighter IV my vote, I have a feeling it won't help though.

I can't really find too much fault with the list, it is the BAFTA's after all. When has any award ceremony been about quality? It's all politics and trying to gain public interest.
Edit: not that those games aren't quality, most would be in my list... if I had one.

Uncharted 2, closely followed by Batman: AA. If COD:MW2 wins then there's something wrong with a lot of people.
  • kinky_mong #25 2 years ago

Out of the choices I'd pick Arkham Asylum but it's obvious MW2 will win unfortunately. It will probably win next year as well seeing as CoD4 somehow managed to be included over a year after its release.

I'm also a bit perturbed at NSMB Wii not being included, and Spirit Tracks being included when Bowser's Inside Story is a far better DS RPG.
  • Widge #26 2 years ago

Hi I own an console, I own too games, I have FIFA Football and Modern Warfare 2, I think Modern Warfare 2 is the best game, there are no other games that exist.
  • greenllama88 #27 2 years ago

I kind of wanted to vote for Assassins Creed II as that was probably the game I enjoyed most on the list but then I have to conceed Uncharted was the better game and I really don't want MW2 to win so...
  • optimusprym8 #28 2 years ago

Aren't BAFTAs supposed to be for British companies / artists / etc?

How many of these games were developed in UK? Batman & GTA:CW?

    Batman gets my vote.
  • Stomp224 #29 2 years ago

Uncharted Or Batman, Uncharted Or Batman, Uncharted Or Batman, Uncharted Or Batman, Uncharted Or Batman.......

    I CAN'T CHOOSE! :s
  • Ben86 #30 2 years ago

Uncharted 2 gets my vote with Batman a close 2nd.
  • telboy007 #31 2 years ago

Err, sorry? There is only one contender from that list and it is Assassin's Creed II.
  • tomacwhite #32 2 years ago

Most of these games are dog shit. Actually, dog shit is better.
  • hardtech #33 2 years ago

Batman or Uncharted FTW for me...

Will probably be MW2 though :-(
  • Luckyjim #34 2 years ago

I'd rather Wii Sports Resort than MW2. It should really be Uncharted 2, though.
  • zuljin #35 2 years ago

    @Stomp224
I know! I'm stuck between those two as well. Batman just engrossed me, but I really enjoyed Uncharted too. I think Batman may get my vote on the merit of not having annoying bosses.

    @EarlBassett
I didn't enjoy Modern Warfare 2 either, mainly because the mp has lost all sense of tactics/teamplay. Also, I'm having trouble understanding how rewarding people doing really well with UAVs/fighter planes/helicopters could be percieved as great gameplay by their designers. Although I have BF:BC2 on preorder for getting me my mp fix.
  • RobotRocker #36 2 years ago

More like Modern Awardfare 2 amirite

Or they can give it to The Beatles: Rock Band since the theme of MW2 and Uncharted 2 is "I Wanna Hold Your Hand (Through the game)" or "Run For your life (Repeatedly through both games till its not funny anymore because developers can only think of the same scripted sequence that involves running from some threat)"

Kidding of course, but being Oscar Mike constantly got grating after a while.
  • SwashbucklingStuff #37 2 years ago

I've not played Uncharted but I would vote for Batman: AA because it's the game on the list that gave me the most joy and (although licensed) it is the only original IP in terms of a game title. As a result it's a pretty staggering achievement.
  • darkmorgado #38 2 years ago

I voted for Arkham Asylum :-)
  • captain_Carl #39 2 years ago

  • Caimbeul #40 2 years ago

    Uncharted
    Batman
    Zelda
  • spekkeh #41 2 years ago

Looking back at it, 2009 was a pretty tame year games-wise (Bayonetta and ME2 this first month already blows the previous year out of the water imo). But I don't think it's that bad when MW2 wins. This coming from a person who got tired of standard fare FPS games ten years ago, I played MW2 and actually liked it quite a bit. It's kind of like a well pulled off summer blockbuster. Sure, nothing intricate or innovative, sometimes quite daft even, but it ticked all the right boxes to create a thrilling rollercoaster ride from start to end. Never bothered about the MP, but being a gamer pressed for time I also didn't mind the six hour campaign.
  • sfp_noodle #42 2 years ago

voted uncharted 2 but the way it seems right now, for every U2, batman AA and AC2 vote, there are probably 10 MW2 votes. and i agree with what a previous poster said before - how the hell does giving players a fucking helicopter or a bloody gunship constitute as good game design? the perks completely ruined the MP for me and with all the glitches and bugs in the game, ppl have been spamming them to death and artificially inflating their stats whilst ruining the experience for everyone else. killstreaks shud never exist. ever.
  • RobotRocker #43 2 years ago

Those who throw stones at multiplayer unlocks should not in the glasshouse of paid costume DLC
  • Murton #44 2 years ago

@ Earlbasset: I suspect there will be a lot of trend bucking "MW2 is shit because is it teh popular" going on, but that doesn't excuse the fact that after all the singing and dancing that Infinity Ward and Activision did, it just didn't live up to the hype and didn't feel like the franchise was going anywhere, combined with poor design decisions and a lot of unaddressed bugs and you'd have a hard time defending it as a GOTY candidate.
  • Lee_Morris #45 2 years ago

How can CoD4 have won it last year and MW2 be up for it this year, when World at War came out in between them two?
  • sarcasmoidosis #46 2 years ago

If you vote, they give you some wallpapers (no full hd resolution though). Also, it's funny that if you browse the 2009 awards, there's a link to purchase MW2...
  • StolenRequiem #47 2 years ago

Sadly it's gonna go to Modern Glitchfare 2: Revenge of the 12 Year Old Elevator Glitchers.
    Hopefully UC2 wins.
But the day MOdern Glitchfare isn't voted by the 12 year old masses is the day Charlton gets to Wembley.

  • sfp_noodle #48 2 years ago

    @ stolenrequiem

+1 for making me chuckle :D
  • RobotRocker #49 2 years ago

Well at least they fixed the voting where games from 2007 where able to win the awards for 2008.

This time the game has to of been released in 2009
