Bad Company 2 dents Japanese chart

PSP is this week's best-selling machine.

There are five new games in Media Create's Japanese top 10 this week, including Battlefield: Bad Company 2 in seventh (PS3).

But the stampede couldn't shake last week's champion Pokemon Ranger: Tracks of Light from the top spot, nor old-timers Friend Collection (DS) from second or New Super Mario Bros. Wii from third.

The newcomers start with Holy Invasion of Privacy, Badman in fourth (PSP), and continue through Dynasty Warriors: Strikeforce 2 (PSP) in fifth, Zettai Hero: Modification Plan (PSP) in sixth, BFBC2 in seventh (PS3) and RPG Maker DS in eighth.

The Ultimate Hits version of Dragon Quest IX (DS) is in ninth and Wii Fit Plus rounds the list out in 10th.

The Xbox 360 version of Battlefield: Bad Company 2 finished 14th, and right down in 28th there's a new entry for Rockstar's PSP adaptation of Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars.

PSP just beat DS in the hardware stakes, whereas Wii was comfortably ahead of PS3. Predictably, Xbox 360 and PS2 were bottom of the pile.

  1. PSP - 40,316 (PSP 39,125, PSPgo 1191)
  2. DS - 39, 105 (DSI XL - 21,604, DSi - 13,581, DS Lite - 3,920)
  3. Wii - 31,460
  4. PS3 - 26,481
  5. Xbox 360 - 2668
  6. PS2 - 1825

Anyone would think Microsoft were staffed by whales and dolphins with the reaction the Japanese have to the Xbox.

and yet their 360 version of BFBC2 still ranked 14...

    PSP 39,125, PSPgo 1191

Not surprised PSPgo is falling flat on it's face - I noticed PSP version of Dantes Inferno was on PSN for £34.99. I thought it was a joke....

for all the japanese anti-microsoft malarky, 14th aint a bad position.
  • duckncover #5 2 years ago

@cyacomini - It's either that or publishers will receive less shelf space in leading retailers if they attempt to undercut them. One of the many battles going on in the industry at the moment.

If everything goes digital, there won't be any second games to sell, which means retailers business model would be broken. Of course, retailers selling second hand games are a big part of why publishers are losing money.

It is a game of cat and mouse.

The japanese chart just shows, in my opinion, the irrelevance of Japanese games this gen
  • Doctor_What #7 2 years ago

Every week someone says that effinjamie, and it's stilll not true. The Japanese market is a curious beast, and two of the three major platform manfacturers are based there as well as many of the big publishers. It's useful to see what climate surrounds them... Maybe it's more interesting for developers than normal gamers, but it's still something that people interested in the industry should keep in mind.

Yeah, going by the charts is a very effective way to gauge relevance. :p

@ Kinky_mong: Personally I find moisturiser made from Microsoft staffer blubber to be the best for my dry skin.

Once upon a time, practically all my games were Japanese.
Once upon a time, Japanese developers were at the cutting edge of graphics, be it in 2d or 3d.

I look at my collection now and see that most of my games have been developed in Europe or America.
The best looking games at the moment have either been developed in America or Europe.

I 1/2 agree with you, they need to step it up over there. Back in SNES/Megadrive days Japan was where it was at. They've struggled (gameplay wise) in making the jump to 3d. Graphically speaking, Japan's devs are still exemplary.

I feel the Final Fantasy's stagnated when they hit double figures. And even my fav Japanese-developed games of the last few years, (Dead Rising, Ninja Gaiden, Res Evils) tended to suffer from either poor AI, Camera angles or controls - or all three. Increased difficulty due to poor controls/camera angles really grinds my gears.

I miss the days of Parodius, the metroid-ey Castlevainias, 2D Zeldas, Chrono Trigger/Cross, Cybernator, etc.

'They've struggled (gameplay wise) in making the jump to 3d'

Don't agree. The Japanese developers were pretty much head and shoulders ahead of other developers with regards to 3d in the mid to late 90s. 3d racing games, fighting games, platform games etc. Look at the work Sega, Namco and Nintendo did.

  • bratmandu #13 2 years ago

Oh racing games and fighting games have mostly been spot on. Hard to mess that up, but anything 1st person/3rd person (not that they have many first person ones) seem to have control/camera/AI issues.

Examples would be Ninja Gaiden, Res Evil, Dead Rising, Bionic Commando, DMC, metal gear solids.

Here's my opinion: without even clicking on your name I can be pretty confident you have a 360 Gamertag on there. You love your 360; you crack one off to it every day and dream about it every night. As far you're concerned it's the greatest thing since Baby Jesus was born, however those nasty Japanese don't confirm to your view of the New World Order! How very fucking dare they...
So, in a lame attempt to justify your purchasing choices you label an entire market "irrelevent".

Your comment says more about you than they.

Main problem with Japan is, most of the world is enamoured with First person shooters, and they have no idea how to make them.

lol, I clicked on his name, and yep... spot on.

    Bit harsh wasn't it?

Here's my opinion: without even clicking on your name I can be pretty confident you have a PSN account on there..

    Works both ways :)

You don't need to be able to 'link' accounts on EG to be a rampant fanboy though - do you?
  • cyacomini #19 2 years ago

'So, can I link both PSN and XBL accounts here on EG?'

No, I don't think that's ever been possible. Maybe some day though...

'Leave that "rampant fanboy" bull from your reply'

Not directed at yourself squire but the rather tetchy BritishBlue.

    @ SHARXTREME and BritishBlue1

Funny, you don't have ANYTHING in your profile that isn't PS3-related. Methinks the ladies doth protest too much?

    On-topic:

I know the 360 has easily outsold the Xbox in Japan but those weekly sales numbers are just too low. Yes, there's a prestige thing and all, but Microsoft should, I don't know, maybe not pull-out of Japan but maybe accept defeat and refocus efforts in other markets. And I have to say, looks like the Japanese aren't fond of digital-only software purchasing, based on those PSPGo sales...

    In MY Japan?

It's more likely than you think!
  • Quixz #23 2 years ago

Microsoft are not doing too bad this time round. I believe they have sold over a million 360s there.
