AVP console patches "scrapped"

Man, you look just like I feel.

SEGA has said that forthcoming patches for the console versions of Aliens vs. Predator have been "scrapped".

"I've just received a mail this AM regarding patches for the console versions of AVP and I regret to inform everyone that these have sadly been scrapped," assistant community manager 'Clumsyorchid' revealed.

"I had previously made a claim that these were coming and at the time, this was very much on the table. For the console community, I apologise, as I know there are many features and updates that you'd like to see.

"I'll keep fighting internally for this to happen, but until I hear otherwise, there will not be a console patch for either Xbox or PS3."

Asked whether the same would be true for PC, the same rep said: "I have heard nothing on PC patches and would not assume there will be any changes unless stated otherwise."

We've contacted SEGA Europe for clarification.

Developed by Rebellion, AVP was released earlier this year and sold well despite middling reviews. The studio has since supported it with downloadable content.

So they blew all association with it out of the airlock, like Ripley did to her bastard child in Resurrection?

    Can't say I blame them.

I'm guessing the poor reviews didn't turn a bitter SEGA exec into god damned sexual tyrannosaurus, just like me.

Yet another reason why I'm glad I didn't buy this game. So you only support titles which sell well even if the patches are required? Fuck you Sega, and thanks (just) for the memories.

It's terribly sad how this game ended up as it is quite a good game despite the overkill of hate many seem to aim at it.

Broken MP (well on PC at least not sure on consoles) and rip off DLC for the content starved MP really ruined things, I like the game but will certainly need winning over big time when the sequel hits.

I can only pray Gearbox fare better with CM.

Hudson: Is this gonna be a standup fight, sir, or another bughunt?
SEGA Exec: Neither, we're just going to scrap development on any existing patches
  • photoboy #10 2 years ago

Not surprising, Sega dumped Sega Racing Team so soon after Sega Rally Revo was finished that there was no chance of a patch for that to fix the broken AI on certain tracks. It's pretty disgusting the way publishers just dump a game and its developers once it's out the door if sales aren't immediately sky high.

I say they take off, nuke the game from orbit. Its the only way to be sure

    Ripley: They cut the power.
Hudson: What do you mean, "*They* cut the power"? How could they cut the power, man? They're animals!

Newt: My mommy always said there were no monsters - no real ones - but there are.
Ripley: Yes, there are, aren't there?
Newt: Why do they tell little kids that?
Ripley: Most of the time it's true.

AvP Community: Hey, maybe you haven't been keeping up on current events, but we just got our asses kicked, pal!

AvP Community: That's it man, game over man, game over! What the fuck are we gonna do now? What are we gonna do?
Burke: Maybe we could build a fire, sing a couple of songs, huh? Why don't we try that?

-Apologies for the quotes fest (they seem rather apt).

It's about time developers abandon that piece of shit publisher Sega.

    @Von_adder
It could be contractual obligations, lack of money or time. Mixed with the number of people still actually playing the game to make it a worthwhile exercise.

Just before we go any further, can I just confirm that this comment thread is going to pretty much repeat the entire script of Aliens eventually?

  • Gambit1977 #21 2 years ago

So sega made a massive thing of getting the rights to Aliens...then fucked 'us' all? Gearbox must think 'segas down, let's get the fuck out of here'
  • sneetch #22 2 years ago

    @EarlBassett

Good question, what needs to be patched? I can't see because they've apparently banned my (work) IP address.

"They mostly just dump and run. Mostly"
  • Doctor_What #24 2 years ago

Sony and MS do charge for patches. I guess the money just doesn't stack up. 'Shame, because the bug hunt pack they released has been getting a really good response (much better than the first one).
  • ManBeast #25 2 years ago

Real shame. I've been enjoying playing this on X360 for the last few weeks. Sure the online isn't as populated as Call of Duty or Halo, but there haven't been any real lack of players until after this was announced. Not sure if it is coincidence but the last few nights have been very hard to find a game, and when you do there are only 3-4 other players in it.

I really believe that a decent patch would attract and encourage more people to play, even buy it at the reduced price it is now. Of course the worst thing is, this news comes less than a week after the latest map-pack was released. God help SEGA if they do the same to Colonial Marines...
  • bodypopper #26 2 years ago

Patches mostly come out at night. Mostly.
Or in Rebellion's case maybe, if you're lucky.
Oh well, it'll soon be less than a tenner in shops. I'll finally be tempted to go, er, bug-hunting then.

If only all devs were like Epic, just look at the massive amount of FREE dlc UT3 received on PS3 like the Titan pack and all the maps and mods in the Mod browser, awesome value for money.

AvP is pretty underrated in my mind, I really enjoyed the game even with it's flaws.
  • Ryuken #28 2 years ago

The PC version received plenty of updates, patching it through Steam is always going to be easier/less expensive than getting an update go through MS or Sony certification. AvP isn't the only proof of that.
  • CaptainQuint #29 2 years ago

    No more patches?

Hey what are we supposed to use man, harsh language?
  • Gastrian #30 2 years ago

    @Retro-

What you've missed out is that Epic self-publishes so they can self finance patches and DLC or build it into the original costs. As SEGA is holding the purse strings Rebellion has to dance to their beat and if SEGA says there is no more money for patches then there is no more patches regardless of what Rebellion want.
  • ignatiusjreilly #31 2 years ago

    @Gastric

And... that's why more devs should be like Epic ;)
  • Machetazo #32 2 years ago

In Colonial Marines we Trust. Sega can go jump, for the resulting farce it was delayed for, though.
  • Matfink #33 2 years ago

They did this with Total War too.

"I say we take off and nuke the entire site from orbit."

Imagine that one coming from a SEGA exec describing the Multiplayer! :)
  • androidave #37 2 years ago

I've played this for a bit on the ps3, done and alien campain and will start on the the others soon. The multiplayer is totally broken though, sat for about half an hr trying to find and game and, nothing, half the time it wouldn't even connect.. When half the trophies / achivements are for the multiplayer side of things, its a bit of a disapointment there not even going to patch it...

They should have carried on development of aliens: colonial marines instead of rushing this out first.
  • bratmandu #38 2 years ago

Just get the second one done, finish it properly this time! Make your levels, sort out controls and collision - smoothness with the alien, stealth with the predator, awesome guns with the marine.

You gotta make the control of the alien better, don't have the collision detection pick up every bump in the scenery, glide the camera over it so you don't have to worry about disorientation when moving over slightly uneven surfaces. For the predator bits go and play Thief2 and Arkham Asylum and combine those, for the marine bit give the player at least as much control as every other fps (iron sights would be nice).

Keep the game modes for multiplayer, add a few more, make the levels better. OK?

    LLLLLLLet's go....
  • drumbaby #39 2 years ago

Btw, any of you play the 'Tempest' map in Survivor Mode yet? Wow...the rain's pouring down anyway, but then becomes torrential to the point where it sometimes gets in your virtual eyes and blurs everything out. A really nice little visual trick, and makes the combat even scarier :)

  • General_Zod #45 2 years ago

The only way it would work is if Sega sabotaged certain features on the trip back. Then they could jettison the patches and make up any story they liked.

  • Gammerz #48 2 years ago

If it's faulty, aren't they legally bound to fix it, surely it's not optional? You can't take the game back once it's unwrapped! How does the software industry get away with it?

game developers and publishers will not support games unless the gaming community takes a stand for game support in general for all games. What is the point of having developed the whole idea of dlc and continued game support if game developers and publishers like Sega won't support games anyway!?!? My example is AVP on th consoles. I have read so many statements from gamers who want more game support for AVP, but Sega seems to have turned a deaf ear to the increasing fan base of this game. AVP is one game that really deserves some polish work and some new and exciting maps like ' TEMPEST' for example! What a cool and unique game AVP is only to end up unpolished and unsupported! Well,. if this is a sign of things to come... I am sad for all gamers and the great games that should have been...
