Autumn 360 update dated

Get old Xbox titles from Live.

The autumn update for the Xbox 360 Dashboard will take place on 4th December.

Microsoft reportedly confirmed the news to the Official Xbox Magazine, and revealed its biggest new feature as a service to let you download original Xbox titles like Halo.

Eventually it will make as much of its back catalogue available as possible, but for now the line-up includes Halo, Fable, Fahrenheit, Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge, Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex and Burnout 3.

Each game will cost 1200 Microsoft Points (GBP 10.20 / EUR 13.96).

MS also shed some light on its European video on demand service, which will unfortunately not be included in the 4th December update.

However, big studios like Warner Bros. are apparently signing up for the rental service, which lets you download and watch your favourite films in 720p.

You should realise that once you have downloaded a film you can have it for two weeks, and once you begin watching it you will have a day to finish it - it will delete itself after that.

Further details will be forthcoming, and we will let you know when we hear more.

I want a patch that applies the Vista Halo 2's achievements to the Xbox version, so I can play through it again and it contributes to my gamerscore.
  • Wayne #5 4 years ago

What I *really* want to know is if there's gonna be achievement points on the old games?

Secondly, cus it hasn't been made clear, are we getting movie downloads from December 4th in Europe?
  • AcidSnake #6 4 years ago

    Excellent addition!

I'd say nintendo should really rethink those VC prices now...

    No.

'...European video on demand service, which will unfortunately not be included in the 4th December update.' not clear enough?

LOLLERS, I'm think that Video On Demand may not be the same as Movie Downloads.

The Xbox games thing sounds great, i'd love to have all my old games ready to play on my HDD. But I already own the best ones, and i'm not paying twice. o_O
  • Rodney #15 4 years ago

This has almost vindicated my decision to get an elite, now I just to get an internet connection.

Not too sure about the pricing, you can get most of these games preowned for about £5. It would be nice for the convenience of having it on the hard drive, No disk changing is always good.
  • Rodney #16 4 years ago

what is the deal with the film service? why are we not getting it yet?
  • Xerx3s #17 4 years ago

How about you make the games I already own play on the 360? Eh? Eh!

Like? I don't know what games you mean but most games that I own play on the 360.

LOLLERS, I'm think that Video On Demand may not be the same as Movie Downloads.

It isn't. VoD is like a film rental service while DD is more like a dvd shop.

Risk of bricking just in time for christmas, lovely.

You know it's going to happen to some poor sod =/
  • Xerx3s #20 4 years ago

Agreed with wanting more titles backwards compatible though. I was kinda hoping that's what this update was about :\

The BC updates are bi anual as well but are not related to the system updates.
  • statix101 #21 4 years ago

Hmm...wont take long to fill up the 20gb hdrive, downloading Xbox 1 games onto it..

  • Killerbee #22 4 years ago

Great move by MS - and yet another step that makes Sony's decision to axe PS2 backwards compatibility on the PS3 look very short sighted.

The only howler would seem to be the fact that most 360 owners have only a paltry 20GB (less once you factor in all the gubbins) of storage space - actually I imagine there's room for two Xbox titles at best for most users.

Of course, Elite owners will be laughing.

Otogi, Oddworld: SW, Guilty GearXX Reloaded, Burnout 2, Dues Ex: IW, MK: Shaolin Monks, Psi Ops, RSpor Challenge 2, Riddick, The Warriors. I could go on. The vast majority of my collection don't work BC.

Ah, only have three of those as I thought the rest was p00.

    Jet Set Radio Future please......
  • Physically_Insane #29 4 years ago

isn't it weird that i wouldn't buy halo if it didn't have achivements, but would if did have them?
  • mkreku #30 4 years ago

I wonder how long the 20 GB will last when this service gets under way.. Not that it IS 20 GB.. More like.. 13.
  • dudefella #31 4 years ago

holy crap, the potential of the new old XBOX games feature is stagggering. I'll probably get Crimson Skies right off the bat, and if they keep adding more good games... I might need a bigger HDD!
  • Arcadiian #32 4 years ago

    @ Razzajazz.

I think JSRF is already backwards compatible, isn't it? Unless you mean you want to download it.
  • miiiguel #33 4 years ago

I knew my Elite would worth something, gotta tell missus...
Maybe I'll "get lucky" before 2008, after all...

Old games don't interrest me, unless they put Achievements on it. Can't play a game without Achievements anymore.

  • M83J01P97 #34 4 years ago

I don't suppose any of you tech savvy people would know roughly how big an X Box game is? 4 gb? Less?
  • miiiguel #35 4 years ago

Ranges from around 600 Mb (Test Drive) to 5.9Gb (Ninja Gaiden).
  • steoc4 #36 4 years ago

Well that's that settled. I was gonna buy a Premium for Mass Effect but now it'll have to be an Elite.

Very nice update. Hopefully it'll prompt Sony to do the same with PS2 titles. Or at least start expanding on the PS1 games available on PSN.
  • bdgr #37 4 years ago

never mind burnout 3, where's burnout 2?! I want to play burnout 2!!
  • ParanoidZombie #38 4 years ago

I'll definitely buy Fable, always wanted to try that game... I hope it will include the lost chapters add-on, though, otherwise i'll try and get the disk version. Bring KOTOR 1+2, ninja gaiden black, call of cthulhu, thief 3 and rallisport challenge 2, please, and achievements too... And a coffee, a free copy of ninja gaiden 2 and a free 120gb HD, as well.;)
  • NickyJD #39 4 years ago

I would rather pay a fiver on Amazon or Play.com for a second hand copy and have the actual disk.

Plus I've only got a 20GB hard drive, plus when your 360 red rings you'll only be able to play these games on a new console with the profile that payed for them and you'll have to be signed into live, same deal as Xbox live arcade games I'm guessing.

  • Darren #40 4 years ago

Being able to download old Xbox games is a nice idea but I kept all my favourites anyway and most work on the 360 already so they're less useful for me alas. I even have the 120 GB HDD, which everyone is going to need if they plan on downloading Xbox games which are typically 4-8 GBs a piece.
  • Darren #41 4 years ago

P.S. You can buy a lot of these old games boxed and on disc for less than £10 these days so the download price is perhaps a little high.
  • homerramone #42 4 years ago

The 20GB (well - 11GB) HDD wont take long to fill with these fellas !

They really need to drop the 120 drive price. Esp since the PS£ can take any notebook drive !

    Robbings gits.

ms should include support for usb hard drive. so you can just plug in some random usb hard drive. reformat it and done with the whole hd stuff.

  • Rodney #44 4 years ago

There are a few games I never got round to playing, last-gen. Crimson Skies being one of them. I think this will suite more pick-up and play arcade type games. just turn on the console and be in the game within seconds.

I really dont like this DRM, games being assigned to Live profiles business. I hate DRM.
  • bluebird #45 4 years ago

I second Panzer Dragoon Orta. Telling us it is compatible when it is only for the first few levels... tsk!
  • suzakuseven #46 4 years ago

There is only one thing I'd like in the update. 16:10 resolution support. That is literally it.
  • Carlo #47 4 years ago

£10+ to supply games that should be working via your crap BC implimentation?

    Buhahahaha
  • OnlyMe #48 4 years ago

    Dear Sony

Since MS now offers downloadable Xbox games, you should follow suit and offer us downloadable PS2 games, in addition to the PS1 games.
  • Eraserhead #49 4 years ago

Um Sofalover... the film download thing isn't happening yet. Pricing for films isn't even mentioned in the article. That's for games.
  • mattigan #50 4 years ago

Films will probably weigh in at around £3 for SD and £5 for HD
  • BadBoyBonner #51 4 years ago

Hmmm - not sure about this one. On the one hand it is always nice to have the widest choice available of how to acquire games.

On the other hand, the price is ridiculous - and is effectively from how ridiculously priced MS live games are to start with. I agree they should charge more - to try keep other live games attractive - but all the prices are too much really.

Obviously second hand Xbox games - are not only cheaper to begin with - but you still own the the thing after you have finished with it and can sell it on - something all publishers HATE.

The real kicker will be if there is ever a game available for download that MS claim they can not get to work on BC.

In addition - most of the BC games are a pain in the arse for me as I use VGA.
  • Caimbeul #52 4 years ago

a full blown xbox game for 1200 points - kind of makes the rest of the XBL games look very expensive in comparison!

  • MBar #53 4 years ago

    Halo: Win.
    Burnout 3: Win.
    Crimson Skies: Win.
    Fahrenheit: Win.

However, I do own them all on Disc, so will not be paying for them again.

    Good idea though.

PS: Am I the only one that thought Panzer Dragoon Orta was rubbish?
    Edited by 1 at 13/11/07 @ 13:35
  • JediMasterMalik #54 4 years ago

Sony really need to do this with PS2 titles.
  • Caimbeul #55 4 years ago

"How about you make the games I already own play on the 360? Eh? Eh!"

Indeed! However I think that they think that you want to pay or them again AND buy a bigger HDD because you are certainly not fitting many Xbox games on the standard 20Gb (read 13Gb!) for the majority of owners.
  • lennon #56 4 years ago

@BadBoyBonner - The vga thing is my biggest issue with the BC. If they fix that for Pyschonaughts its a sale for me.
  • Caimbeul #57 4 years ago

"Like? I don't know what games you mean but most games that I own play on the 360."

    - I think there are still a fair few that wont play.
  • M4RKYB #58 4 years ago

That'll be great to bring some of the old Live classics such as Crimson Skies to a much larger Live audience now. I know you can go an buy the disc if you want but i doubt many people will be playing it on Live, but whack it on the marketplace and I'm sure loads of people who missed out 1st time round will be interested.
  • rhubarbandcustard #59 4 years ago

Don't understand the criticism for this move. For £250 you could handpick your favourite old xbox games, store them on the hard drive and instant access as you please. No more worrying about scratched disc's, missing disc's or trying to find a used copy for an acceptable price and in acceptable condition. Also I think people over-value how much money they can get back for games they have bought. Chances are if you want to sell it, it was rubbish, and who the hell other than you wants to buy bad games. Saying that, I haven't played an xbox game in a while. I bet they look bloody terrible since we now expect everything in glorious HD. So, maybe I won't be buying them after all. £10 for an old game in SD. Bloody rip-off!! :)
  • BBIAJ #60 4 years ago

I wasn't aware of Microsoft ever stating that there were any games which categorically could not be emulated.

If they can do the likes of Conker, Doom3, Halo 2, and Panzer Dragoon Orta (sort of), then what's stopping them from doing anything?

If you can tell me the games which they supposedly can't do, and include a link to an article to back you up, then I would be most interested to both see them and read it.

    Cheers!
  • Mr_Dodger #61 4 years ago

A quick spin on the intarwebs reveals the following:

    Crimson Skies, Amazon, £3.67
    Fable, Amazon, £3.25
    Fahrenheit, Amazon, £6.95
Crash Bandicoot Wrath Of Cortex, Amazon, £5.45
    Burnout 3, Amazon, £7.00

Halo is still going for £10-ish. I haven't checked any of these on ebay, but most could probably be had dirt cheap with a well timed bid.

Postage will probably be around £2 for these, meaning that they would be around the £6-9 mark.

Not a million miles away from the £10 being charged. I think the convenience factor of not having to change disks will sway a lot of people. But weigh that against a rapidly filling hard drive. Maybe they really are trying to push those 120's.

But it is always worth a trawl through the pre-owned sections in your local shops. Xbox and PS2 games are really cheap now. I picked up Splinter Cell Chaos Theory (Xbox) for £3.00.
  • Xerx3s #62 4 years ago

If they can do the likes of Conker, Doom3, Halo 2, and Panzer Dragoon Orta (sort of), then what's stopping them from doing anything?

It is a lot more complex that it seems. Some games really used a special coding approach to squeeze the most out of the machine. It comes down to the fact that all needs to be looked at line by line.

It would be a lot easier if MS had full rights to the xbx architecture components, that way they could do something similar to the ps2 and 3.
  • bonker #63 4 years ago

    £10 sounds extortionate to me.
  • red3p #64 4 years ago

Do they add achievements to these games?!
  • CyberClaw #65 4 years ago

miiiguel, you are wrong. Warez XBox games are never the real size, because they cut on movies so that the release can be burned into a regular DVD.

Ninja Gaiden (your example) is in fact pretty close to 9 gigs. You can cut half of the movies of the release because they are repeated with Japanese and English dialogue, so they shrink the release in 3 or 4 gigs... But don't be fooled, because the real game is 9 gigs. On the other hand, there are Xbox games comercially sold on CDs so they can't be bigger than the 800-900 Megs CD limit.
  • Lukus #66 4 years ago

The movie rental service sounds good, but only 1 day to watch them once you start? A bit stingey. 3 would be more reasonable.
  • Xerx3s #67 4 years ago

so this is HDLoader, except with added DRM and proprietary HDDs? Sounds great.

If it wasn't there you would moan as well. Nobody forces you to use it.

£10+ to supply games that should be working via your crap BC implimentation?

    Buhahahaha

Only one of the games in that list isn't supported, good chance that it is in the next update. Where you saying the same when the ps3 started to support the ps1 games?
At least it's better than including a previous gen console and then dropping bc completely.

Once again, all of the games listed are currently BC, are they not?
  • brainbird #76 4 years ago

Hey, Microsoft, how about you let us pop in our old games into the 360 and rip them to the HD? You know, just like we did with our chipped xboxes years ago.
  • pinchofsalt #77 4 years ago

I'll buy them for half the price on my first Xbox, thanks.
  • orcane #78 4 years ago

makes me want to get a "new" Xbox to play my games on (no way in hell am I going to buy them all again) since my launch Xbox has severe problems reading game discs of newer games, and ofc I failed to buy a new one before they were discontinued when the 360 launched...
  • TriggerHippie #79 4 years ago

Thankfully I still have my original Xbox to play these games. Xbox Live! games dont play on my Xbox Dead!
  • wobbly_Bob #80 4 years ago

This news article should read "M$ THINK OF NEW WAY TO FLEECE MONEY FROM OWN CONSOLE FANS"

    Really, this is fucking stupid.

£10 pounds per game? Fuck off. I recently purchased Fable for £4 from a shop and can by any number of Xbox games from much less and PLUS ( here is the important bit ) I actually get a disc and case and game instructions and should I wish I can take it around a friends house and play it there or should I wish can lend it out, or should I wish when I am bored with it I can sell it along with my other games and get cash to get more games!

And another thing, how many games will I be able to fit on my 20Gig drive? Idiots.

Arcade games are too expensive, this is a rip off also. And Don't get me started on themes and gamer pics! I refuse to buy them in principle because on a pay for service that kind of stupid crap should be free. Make Live a pay for service and I'll consider buying that kind of shit, but until then they can get stuffed.

Movies are also over priced. I belong to http://www.lovefilm.com< /a> and for £12 a month I get unlimited DVD rentels two at a time including HD movies. I can have them as long as I want with no late fees. M$ can stuff that idea as well. Bring down the prices and give me a bigger hard drive and I'll think about it :-P

I applaud MS for offering Xbox games for download, but £10 does seem a little on the steep side. It's certainly not a price I'd pay anyway, £7 would be the absolute maximum for my pocket... especially as I'd have to buy a new HDD to fit it all on at some point as well.
  • DanWhitehead #82 4 years ago

Word is that Psychonauts will also be one of the initial line-up.
  • MARKIV #83 4 years ago

So what about letting us download 360 games to our HD's. I'd of thought that would of been more beneficial, especially for cashing in on that all important arrive home late at night pissed market!
  • BaggyAnt #84 4 years ago

if they add achievements in then colour me interested
  • rommy667 #85 2 years ago
