Atlus now a 360 publisher News

Xbox 360 News by Robert Purchese

19 November, 2007

US publisher Atlus has shaken hands with Microsoft to become an official third-party publisher for the Xbox 360.

The first titles it will publish will be localisations of Japanese tactical role-playing games Operation Darkness and Spectral Force 3 sometime next year, and teaser sites for both are already up and running.

Operation Darkness puts a supernatural spin on World War II and sees you battle none other than moustached maniac Hitler as he sweeps through Europe.

Spectral Force 3, on the other hand, puts you in the boots of a mercenary commander and asks you to amass an army of around 40 characters to battle the baddies.

Atlus has been responsible for bringing critically celebrated games like Trauma Center and the Shin Megami Tensei series to western audiences in the past.

And while Atlus doesn't publish games in Europe, its catalogue has been picked up by the likes of Ghostlight, Ubisoft, KOEI and Nintendo previously - so we should see both new 360 games here.

Pop over to Eurogamer TV for a look at Operation Darkness in action.

Disgaea looked like a PS1 game and it's still one of the best games ever.

Graphics don't break a game.

Operation Darkness looks like it's going to be brilliant fun, with a strong focus on RPG, there'll still be tactical play involved, even if there probably aren't exaggerated cut scenes when the enemy tank commander fires up the main gun. It reminds me of Ring of Red, so I just can't wait to play this thing!

They didn't exactly sell well on the PS2, why would they sell better on the 360? Not a very clever move by MS imo.

Atlus do seem to publish the more interesting and quirky titles that'd never reach European shores without them. They may not run with the best software technology but added variety to the 360 line-up is certainly welcomed.

Good news if Atlus and other Japanese developers start making some nice 360 games. Otherwise doesn't mean much. Atlus USA just localise and publish existing titles, don't they?

Yay! I've been waiting for confirmation that Operation Darkness will make it out of Japan. It's apparently got a hideous camera but I can't wait to play it...here's hoping the US version is region free!

Believe it or not but Operation Darkness is the game that would finally tip me over into buying a 360.The sheer atmosphere of this game looks incredible.I don't know what it is exactly but it just seems to tick all the right boxes with me.
