Assassin's Creed MP episode by April 2011
Standalone product with Ezio in it.
Ubisoft has said to expect more Assassin's Creed during its next fiscal year, which begins in April and ends on 31st March 2011.
What's more, the publisher said it would be "a new episode of Assassin's Creed, which will be the first in the series to have an online multiplayer mode".
It's not clear whether this refers to Assassin's Creed III, but the wording suggests not, as does Ubisoft's subsequent clarification that it will be a standalone game and that the protagonist of ACII, Ezio Auditore, will feature.
Assassin's Creed II was a marked improvement on the promising original, picking up 9/10 from us.
Ubisoft said yesterday that its sales had also built on the momentum of the original, with six million units already sold through and predictions of nine million shipped to retailers by the end of March.

i'd much rather they went straight to work on AC3 instead of wasting time on this

I would prefer AC3 through, if I'm honest, but I'm optimistic this multi-player episode might be quite good.

Then again.. fun co-op missions? A renaissance version of Spies versus Mercs? I'm tempted.

How do you know they're not?
I can't say I'm overly excited about this but I'm willing to try it out. Not sure how they'd apply an online aspect to Assassin's Creed though.
