Oddworld munches sequel News

Xbox News by Tom Bramwell

20 February, 2003

Oddworld: Munch's "it can only be done on Xbox!" Oddysee was an under appreciated platformer in our view, so we were happy to read from multiple sources this week that the next title in the series is underway at developer Oddworld Inhabitants.

"The new game will blow away anything that came before it," programmer Mark Lee enthuses on the developer's forum. "It's still full of the quirky OW sense of humour but at the same time a bit of a departure story-wise from previous games. We have a killer team working on this game and it's coming together pretty fast. I am working on the animation/rendering systems at the moment - the characters in the next game will look a lot more alive."

We can probably expect a formal announcement off the next Oddworld at E3 in May.

Oddworld: Munch's "it can only be done on Xbox!" Oddysee

Or alternatively 'Oddworld: Munch's "it could have been done on the PS2 as well if I hadn't spat my dummy about it being too difficult to program but as it turns out it didn't matter 'cos the game was crap anyway" Oddysee'. :-)

I thought Munch's Oddysee was rough - I really hated they way you had to pick up the damn spooge balls - they really didn't seem to fit in to the gameworld properly. You might as well have made them shiny floating coins, rings or stars. Also, I didn't feel that the game had any kind of flow to the story - the levels seemed unconnected, and you never felt as if you were getting anywhere, quite unlike the original PSX games.

I played through about 1/3 - 1/2 of it and then traded it in at Computer Exchange for £10 off Ghost Recon...

Think the game was wikkid. I remember buying it the same time as my Xbox thinking it would be a game for the wife. Found myself hogging it in the end :D

What's the problem with Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee guys have you actually played the game. About the only annoying bit I found in the game was at the very end putting those damned eggs into those damned crates. Other than that a very enjoyable game indeed.

i think the whole thing was pretty innovative. leaps and bounds ahead of a frickin water gun, though i don't think they implemented the innovations to make it as fun as mario.

i think it was underappreciated for a few reasons: the xbox user base was so small, too many games were released at launch, and everyone was spending their money on halo.

Well I have not enjoyed the training levels (often the case in games though), and they've finally joined up together. Hope it gets good now.

Ohhh Blerky Blerky. What about 'Oddworld: Munch's "Us PS2 fanboys wish we had it on PS2 but since we don't, we think it is crap"

I played the demo and found the camera a wee bit frustrating. How was it in the full version, something you could adapt to?

No, it really is crap. I liked the first Oddworld but it all went wrong somewhere after that. Even Abe's Exxodus was rubbish.

Do we think Ninty borrowed the code and put it straight into Mario Sunshine then....

I think BGIE probably hit the nail on the head. There were simply better things to play when Munch came out. If it popped up in a quiet period we'd no doubt have had more time for it, despite its flaws.

Munch's Odyssee wasn't (isn't) crap, Blerk. Even if it has faults (camera, some repetitive action, less than precise jumping spring to mind), it's still a very good game.

It's more a puzzle game than a platformer, though, so the comparisons with Mario Sunshine are perhaps a bit out of place.
