If today is make Unfounded Sweeping Statements Day, mine is that the only people that would claim that "the only people who still bother to play any form of Breakout are people stuck on public transport with nothing to entertain them but a Blackberry" would be people who've never played the rather lovely PC Indie title BreakQuest.

Or the utter madness of freeware title Block130...

Unlike Space Invaders, Arkanoid *always* sucked...

This reminds me of a game called Kraken on the ZX Spectrum... bring back tapes and crazy modem sounding noises!

"Kraken on the ZX Spectrum."

Krakout. A game that's about a million times better than Arkanoid DS.

There was a game for Amiga, called "Ping" I think, where you had the same basic gameplay except the paddle was on the left and to go to the next stage you simply hit the right edge of the screen. If you missed a ball it rushed back to the previous stage and you could save it although it went ridiculously fast. Of course, if you missed it at the first level you lost.

@Trikk:

Close - it was called Poing! There's a PC remake available here:

Any discussion of ZX Spectrum Breakout clones must begin and end with Batty.

Yes, yes, yes. ZX Spectrum Batty FTW. Probably the best covermount game ever, for any platform.

A friend of mine recommends "Nervous Brickdown" on the DS. Terrible name...

Batty is indeed almighty. Hell, I even spent hours and hours playing 'Thru' the Wall' on the Horizons tape that came with the speccy!

Hey, come on ! These ball and bat games can be very relaxing. In fact I've probably spent more time with this genre than any other in past year. Except with my balls but that's another story.

I'm afraid that, while the mark might look really unnecessarilly cruel, the points in the review are valid. I was ready to be very freindly to this game for old times sake, but playing it I kept repeating to myself 'What the hell, this is actually worse than the original Arkanoid'. It's not horrible or anything, but, seriously, two plus decades after Arkanoid and God knows how many years after Breakout, this is simply not good enough...

Wasn't "Krakout" the one where the bonus letters spelled "G-R-A-V-Y" ?? That was class that game :)
