Pokemon transfer system revealed

Two DS consoles required.

Pokemon fans will transfer their captured monsters from previous games in the phenomenally-successful series to upcoming titles Pokemon Black & White using an archaic system that requires two DS consoles, according to Serebii.net (thanks Siloconera).

The process is conducted via an in-game feature called the "Pokéshifter".

There's a building in the Isshu region, apparently, that allows players to connect with previous games, but only if you have two consoles.

Once you connect, an option will appear allowing you to complete the transfer.

To capture the transferred monsters, players will have to complete a mini-game that involves catching the little critters when they pop out of a set of bushes on the top screen of the DS.

You have to use the touchscreen to aim a reticule to shoot a Pokéball with a bow.

Pokemon White and Pokemon Black will be released in Europe and North America in spring 2011. They're the first all-new Pokemon games for the DS in some time. Current favourites HeartGold and SoulSilver are remakes of Pokemon Gold and Pokemon Silver.

I'm not sure why having to use two DS consoles is 'archaic'. B&W will be on a DS cartridge. The previous generation of Pokémon games are on DS cartridges. The DS has but one DS cartridge slot.
  • Crazyreyn #2 2 years ago

Yeah, there's little way around this.

I have three DSes, and will mostly likely have a 3DS by the time this lands in Europe. Sorted.

This mini game trade mechanic sounds a bit weird though.

How else could it be done? surely two Carts, means two consoles. Suppose you could transfer to an SD card, then back, but thats only on DSi, which not every one has.
  • Centrifugal #5 2 years ago

Ah, good old Pokemon. I still need to play Platinum and Soul Silver.

At Laurenza: The original Pokemon games are on Game boy / GBA cartridges, allowing those of us who own the older style DS versions to plug in two copies of Pokemon.

The article doesn't state how far back you can go to trade, from Generation I or not. That stuff should really be covered in a news item. Otherwise, we would be expecting to transfer from Gen IV, and this isn't news worthy.

arent there more DS consoles in the developed world than people now?!
  • alcides #8 2 years ago

if those two bring HMs up again I swear I'm turning into some sort of activist and lobby some sense into gamefreak for the next half decade to come.

+1 about the self imposed limitations. Like a stupid minigame to transfer pokemon. But their idea of fun seems to be tedium, so...

I love this series, in case no one noticed :)

Oh yeah, that reminds me. When I wanted to trade my Pokemon from Blue up to Gold, I needed to use two Gameboys to do that. Had to use a friend's Gameboy at the time. Doesn't really sound all that far removed from this one.

    Read that as "Pokéshafter".

Interporn has warped my fragile little mind.

Wouldn't it be cool if you could connect to the internet via Wi-Fi and trade Pokemon with random strangers and friends online?

just you and me, you know its our destiny! (to catch pokemon repetitively for all time!)

I don't know if you are being sarcastic or not but that feature was put into the game in Diamond and Pearl. It's how I got all the starter Pokemon by breeding the one I chose a couple of times and trading that online for the other two. I also managed to get most Diamond exclusives on my Pearl cartridge by doing this too.

What they should have done though is allow you to transfer all your old Pokemon to an online box account where you can log in and download them from any DS with the right password entry. I assume the idea of having something like this in place is why EG labelled the article mentioned system as archaic.

Well let me guess. On 1996 Gamefreaks thought up a world where you could store your pokémon ONLINE and download them grom a PC. So as to have access to them whenever you wanted.

I must admit I am very excited about the new stuff, like the 2 kinds of 3on3 battles (the one where it's really 1 on 1 but you may batton-pass anytime, seemingly, and the real 3on3 that sounds amazing in terms of tactics...)

    What players REALLY want

-No HMs. NO. FUCKING. HMS. Make those abilities automatic provided you have the right kind of pokémon if you really think this is a cool mode of progression. Place the obstacles in a fun way that offer branching in the progression. And not just as means of impeding your linear progress. A tree that's been cut. SHALL. NEVER. GROW. AGAIN. A boulder puzzle that's been solved. CANNOT. RESET.

-A sorting utility in the pokémon storage system. Along the lines of Mii Sorting, not the TEDIUM of menus. It. just. doesn't. work. Make pertinent research like "make me a challenging/easy party" "make me a party that's good angainst said type" "make me a party that can use all HMs" (DOWN WHITH HMs, btw!!), swap between parties like you would with a playlist.

    -Unlimited use of TMs

-Direct info on the REAL stats of the pokémon, ie IVs and Evs, "natures" mean nothing to me without a look ŕ Serebii after 7 freaking years.

-A real pokédex that lets us see all of the above.

-Access to a pokémon's movepool like it's just made of pieces of equipment, ie ability for the pokémon to swap techniques in pokémon centers. NO HEART SCALE.

-No move tutors. YOU'RE the fucking trainer, god dammit! If move tutors can do it, you can.

-Bring back contests from pokemon 3. Contests in pokémon 4 imply only shallow half-wits may be interested, with the damning indictment that those are necessarily girls or tranny poofs. Brainless activities like applying fashion items to your pokemon then submitting it to an AI (artifical idiocy) has no gameplay element to it!

-Stop punishing the player for not having a pool of nerdy friends who play pokémon. I want to make good poffins with my own efforts. Because others often suck worse than the AI that helps you anyway.

-Stop throwing away intelligent additions to your game! like day/night/week/radio in P2, trainerdex/contests/diving in P3, pokeradar in P4, Pokewalker/follow-around in HG/SS.

-Drop the inane gimmicks like pokeathlon or make them substantially better.

-When you make a mini game, fucking explain the rules, like the safari zone's catching mechanics, of it's general mechanics like what brings what pokémon, or at least keep a record of what the player Might/Should/Could have already noticed. Like an encyclopedia that fills itself alone, like say, a pokedex. A fucking manual?

-If you're going to make a strategic, deep game, then let the player experience it in the single player section! I want some challenge!

-Stop saving the game all the time of make in quickly in the background.

-The internet thing : make it decent.

This is such a rich game that the list could be endless. Regardless, pokemon could be a greater game if all the unnerving quirks were done away with.

The primary market for pokémon is Japan, where the DS:people ratio is certainly higher than over here. Also, face-to-face co-op gaming is far more popular than online (see also: Monster Hunter on PSP), so using a friend's console will be no problemo in their view.

The minigame will either be boring, or have a time restriction (I think Palpark had the same). It's to stop people trading their entire collection over right off the bat. They won't want everyone to have their pokedex 3/4 full before they even get started. If it's boring enough or you can only trade over 6 per day, most people will only bother to trade the rarest stuff across, and spend more time in the new game re-catching the rest.

    @wez_316

I have clearly missed a rather important Pokemon game! Yeah, Diamond and Pearl have completely passed me by for some reason. No idea why as I'm currently obsessed with HeartGold!
