Another peripheral for Guitar Hero 4
Neversoft not ready to say what.
Neversoft, developer of Guitar Hero World Tour, still has another instrument peripheral to unveil.
The equipment will be specifically tailored for the Studio mode where music and perhaps dreams are made, according to G4.
However, Neversoft's Brian Bright stopped short of confirming what the mysterious instrument will be. Speculation seems most intense around a keyboard or turntable peripheral; Activision has trademarked DJ Hero and Keyboard Hero in the past.
Still, rather late in the day to talk about additional pieces of equipment given the late 2008 release date. Unless, of course, the peripheral was never supposed to be part of the instrument and game bundle box. No sign of anything on retail sites so far, either.
Knee-slide over to our Guitar Hero World Tour preview to see what the Rock Band rival has in the locker.

So do I in theory. But isn't the whole point of these games to get the illusion of playing, on harder difficulties at least, the song without having to learn the instrument? A keyboard with five keys would be a joke. I can't see a way of doing a keyboard mode that would be convincing on expert without making it actually be a keyboard. Which seems a bit ludicrous.

I dunno. Aren't the drums pretty close to actually playing the drums?

I'd bet money on that since it was considered when GH2 was released.
Still got the ethernet style port on the guitar/controller.
Although it would be funny if it was a harmonica or something similar!

That's exactly what I was gonna say. I was still expecting them to bundle an effects pad with the next next spinoff GH, but Aerosmith came with nothin', so thankfully I could avoid it.
Maybe it could be some kind of midi hub that allows you connect up a real keyboard and/or electric drum kit (without having to use the drum controller).

Vaguely. The RB drums are terrible and behave nothing like drums, but the principle is the same. But playing drums is easy, playing a keyboard isn't. There are less drums than keys, and at speed it's rather easier to hit a pad 10" across than something barely the width of a finger.

If its anything like Rock Band they will charge you extra for it

Oh! OH! That's right. I went there.
Wow, this unfunny bitchiness is easier than I thought - no wonder so many people do it here.

Both are easy to play badly, both are hard to play well.
"There are less drums than keys, and at speed it's rather easier to hit a pad 10" across than something barely the width of a finger."
Not really. You have far more dexterity in your fingers than arms and legs and less distance to travel when playing a keyboard. Your fingers naturally work together as your brain is trained from an early age to coordinate hands/fingers. Drumming, and coordinated arm/leg movement is fundamentally harder to learn because your arms and legs do not actually have to, or have the opportunity to, work together for a couple of years after your hands are trained.
Maybe I'm just lucky then. I've been drumming for roughly 12 years, all self-taught, and am very good at it, and have found it to be very easy from day 1, so have just assumed it's an easy instrument to play (certainly guitarists like to tell me it requires no talent!). Guitar and keys, on the other hand, I greatly struggle with. Keys mostly through not having very good technique, and guitar because the margin for error when you have 144 individual positions (not including open notes), just for single notes, on a small stick, is tiny, and I can't get my head around the incredible precision next to me. Perhaps I just have natural independence of limbs that others don't, but I find getting my way around 10 things that are between 8" and 22" much easier than navigating 150 things crammed on to a 2ft bit of wood. If you've got good rhythm and have the 4-way ability required to drive a car properly, which is a very similar skillset, I don't see why you can't pick up drums.

Playing Guitar Hero has no resemblance, whatsoever , to using a real instrument so take your self-indulgent 'I know best' attitude to a fucking real instrument use discussion forum, yeah?
I wish people would just fuck right off with these stupid comparisons, about how certain instruments wouldn't work. For fucks sakes, all you're using is a differently shaped controller which lacks everything that makes a real instrument a real instrument. Nothing more, nothing less .
Using a real guitar takes talent and, when done well, could elevate you to be a real rock star. One day. Possibly. On You Tube.
Using Guitar Hero requires nowhere near the same level of hand/finger/eye/testicle co-ordination and could only ever elevate you to be a cunt in the eyes of everyone else. A cunt who thinks clicking buttons on a plastic guitar equates to 'rocking out'.
Tossers.

They're sharing peripherals and basic functionality with Rock Band. They probably want to say "Yeah, we do what Rock Band does, PLUS..." so the guitars are jiggy with Rock Band but with the extra GH peripheral you can wah wah for extra points and achievements/trophies/sod all but miis look strained.

HELL YEAH. I fervantly believe that getting a high score on these games makes me a better musician than you. I bet your band is WELL SHIT. I PWN your band. Because I casually play a jovial rhythm based game on a console; goddamn you'd better watch your cornhole coz us gamers are out to make the ladiezzz like US more than you.
We're going to put in precisely sod all effort to play a COMPUTER GAME and all of a sudden the woman you hypnotised into liking you with your killer riffs will be going down on us.
For fuck's sake grow up. Or maybe you and Feargal Sharkey can launch a two-pronged attack at karaoke stealing artists' rights to sing.

12 years of real drums, 10 years of producing and engineering, have a studio, and you're telling me what the difference is? Good lord. Clearly you don't understand the concept of fun. Why the hell do you play games anyway? Presumably to have fun. Well Rock Band and Guitar Hero are fun, and if you don't like them, don't play them, and don't look at threads on them, and don't bitch at people for not knowing the difference when they are very familiar with the difference. I know full well Rock Band doesn't make you a rock god. I play real music for that. What it does make you is fun and sociable. You should try it.
