Wii PC PlayStation 2 PSP DS Xbox 360 PlayStation 3
News by Tom Bramwell

28 November, 2008

The Wii version of Animal Crossing topped the Japanese charts in its first week on sale, convincing 305,180 locals to part with their cash, while Chrono Trigger's revival as a DS title accounted for a further 271,868 sales in second place.

Three other new releases make up the top five in the latest round of Media Create figures, for 17th-23rd November, and Gundam vs. Gundam can count itself unlucky only to make third, having shifted 266,932 units on PSP to keep pace with the Square Enix RPG in second.

Then it's Last Remnant, which did 101,543 sales in the Japanese stint of its simultaneous worldwide launch despite middling reviews, and Saka DS: Touch and Go, while the rest of the top ten is made up of games that have been on the shelves for a while, including the million-selling Rhythm Tengoku Gold and Pokemon Platinum.

In terms of hardware sales, the DSi once again lords it over the others with 88,843 sales (with another 18,580 for the DS Lite), while PSP is in second with 61,226, Wii does 35,298, and PS3 and Xbox 360 soldier on with 17,436 and 15,474 sales respectively.

Don't the japanese like to sit on their couches anymore? Why are the two main consoles doing so badly?

Decent sales for the 360 this week. Still last, but not by a long way though.

Perhaps the Japanese Animal Crossing advert isn't as nauseating as the UK one? "Hi Sarah, ooh I love you shirt!"

Is it just me, or are at least seven of the top 10 there rehashes?

Do the Japanese not even like new games?

I haven't seen the Animal Crossing advert (don't watch much TV), but if its anything like the Rednapp family one it would annoy me immensely.

Proof that the Japanese don't want originality they want a game they've already bought twice with a few new features.

Hollow phrases like 'innovation' and 'originality' are only there for reviewers to explain low scores if they can't find better words to explain them.

there's originality and innovation, then there's releasing pretty much the exact same game as the previous 3 incarnations

Nice return on it's development costs, which I'd estimate at about £38.

Solid numbers again for the 360, that would have been unthinkable a couple of years ago

Eh? I'd say that's a universal currency judging by the average gamer's addiction to sequels

You don't think if you scan some Jap forums, there might actually be purchasers who have not played it before?
I thought the idea of a rehash, was to sell it to those who didn't buy it first time around.
