AMD and Valve hold hands News

PC News by Robert Purchese

31 May, 2007

Hardware giant AMD has signed a meaty deal with Valve to offer Radeon graphics cards owners free games.

Your card will be automatically detected when you sign up for a Steam account over on the website, giving you access to free copies of Half-Life 2: Lost Coast and Half-Life2: Deathmatch.

Steam will also be bundled with new Radeon products in the future, and those of you buying a new 2900 XT card will be treated to free downloads of Half-Life 2: Episode 2, Portal and Team Fortress when they're released later this year.

Steam is a digital distribution solution that was unleashed by Valve back in 2002. Since then it's gained significant ground, recently boasting that it had passed more than 13 million active users.

Head over to the Steam website for more information.

Edit: Oh, they're the same company. Nevermind. I'm a dumbass. :P

Hmm, wonder if it checks your card every time you play? If not then just borrow one and then take it out once you've got your games...

If you own a graphics card of any kind, you really should have Half-Life 2 by now already.

isn't lost coast free anyway? or is that only for people who've already bought HL2?

I think it was free for people who owned HL2, but seeing as it's just a short tech demo I guess it's well suited for showing off a spanky new graphics card with.

So is this only for new cards or for any Radeon?
Either way it's useless to me as i don't want HL2:Deathmatch and already have Lost Coast. oh well, nice try Valve how about reinstating the Black Box edition of EP2 instead eh?

It only checks once, but each card can only be redeemed once, too. You'd better make sure that it's owner doesn't mind missing out on free stuff. ;-)

Hmm... given I have HL2 and EP1 already, and I don't want to have to re-buy them to get the EP2/TF2 bundle...

Tempting to just get myself a new card. :-P

Radeon is just a name for the line production for their chipsets or whatever that belongs to ATI. ATI was bought by AMD last year or something so... We've all heard the news about the scum of 2900 card and the same way I got the Radeon 9900xt that was IMBA now I will try avoiding the 2900. Then It was worth the HL2. Now not so tempting :S
