    Ooooh, looks nice.
Is this to replace Splinter Cell now thats gone a bit..."outdoorsy"

First I have heard of this titled tbh. Looks interesting.

Looks pretty interesting, i like playing as a spy, i used to love that mission impossible game on the N64, not enough games that put you in that role imo.

Really looking forward to that Bourne game as well.

It's good that Obsidian works with its own IP this time around. That way, if (IF!!) they do not manage to live up to the expectations of the fans, they at least won't ruin a brilliant series. That said, I think this game looks pretty good. It sure got my attention now.

YAY yet more UE3 blando graphics!! (and if it's not UE3 then the devs should be shot)
  • aldo_14 #5 4 years ago

Looks interesting, Obsidian did really well with KOTOR2... right up to the point Lucasarts told them to shove a half-finished game out the door. If they actually finish it this time, could be great - a spy RPG is an ace prospect, especially if they take a leaf from the Bourne movies (and the new Bond/s).
  • Inigo #6 4 years ago

I had no idea that it was that far along. Obsidian always seem to be undone by the publishers releasing unfinnished buggy code. It will be interesting to see what happens when they have the time to develope the game fully.

I hope its more like The Bourne Identity than James Bond.

    Edit: i agree with aldo_14

Keeping a close eye on this one.

It looks a bit generic graphically, but Obsidian has the potential to turn it into something special. And we aren't exactly drowning in RPGs taking place here and now, anyhow.

First I've heard of this, too. Graphically and stylistically, this looks terribly generic, so I hope the gameplay is up to scratch. And I hope it's not another third person cover/shooter like a million other games out there.

However, I've always felt Obsidian had never had the chance to fulfil their potential (always seemed to be in the shadow of BioWare), so fingers crossed with this one.

Also - weren't they rumoured to be working on a western RPG a while back?
  • marilena #10 4 years ago

It wouldn't have hurt to have released something a bit more special, but, still, at least it looks polished and detailed, something that has lacked generally from Obsidian's previous work. The character's face looks like it's going to be pretty stiff, from what I see.

As long as the script is by Chris Avellone I'm happy.

(Oh, and it's an RPG from what I know, not an out and out action game.)

Um, yes, you're looking at the screenshots. :)

Looks bland but clean. Will be interesting to see how the combat is done, "like Mass Effect" is all we've heard so far.
  • PearOfAnguish #13 4 years ago

"And I hope it's not another third person cover/shooter like a million other games out there. "

It's an RPG. Think Deus Ex in a contemporary setting.
  • Triggerhappytel #14 4 years ago

@UncleLou - what? This looks nothing like a Western - it looks more like a Bourne game, than anything. I meant and was hoping for something with the style of Gun or Red Dead.
  • marilena #15 4 years ago

Ah, by Western you mean with a Wild West theme.

I haven't heard of that. I know there's also an Aliens RPG in works (I forgot who does it, a decent studio as far as I remember, but don't remember exactly who), but I don't remember anything about a Western. It would be awesome though, with these three we'd have the most diverse list of RPGs in the history of RPGs.
  • PearOfAnguish #16 4 years ago

"know there's also an Aliens RPG in works (I forgot who does it, a decent studio as far as I remember, but don't remember exactly who)"

Isn't Obsidian doing Aliens RPG too?
  • UncleLou #17 4 years ago

Oh, classical misunderstanding - haven't heard anything of Wild West themed RPG, either. Sadly. Neither from Obsidian nor from anyone else.

Alpha Protocol, however, is supposed to be an RPG of some sort. And PearOfAnguish is right, Obsidian are also doing an Aliens RPG.

  • syphaa #18 4 years ago

Looks a bit Bourne in style.
Who knows...it might beat the MGS 8/10 :]
  • mkreku #19 4 years ago

This will be nothing like Deus Ex. It's a console game first, PC game second. For example, the enemies will be "over the top", like teenage girls wielding two handguns and Nazi uniformed weirdos and stuff. Also, hold onto your pants now, the game will feature.. UNLIMITED AMMO. Yeah, console kiddies thought managing ammo was too confusing so they got rid of it altogether.

Actually, it might be a bit reminiscent of Deus Ex after all. Deus Ex: Invisible War, that is. Still looking forward to this, mainly because it's Obsidian doing it, but I once had high hopes for this game. Not so stoked now.

    >Obsidian always seem to be undone by the publishers releasing unfinnished buggy code.

Or, alternatively, by Obsidian not hitting their milestones.

It works both ways you know

Looks like a good mix between a lot of spy franchises. I'll keep my eye on this one.
  • Scimarad #22 4 years ago

I'm all for 'unusual' RPGs so I'm quite looking forward to seeing how this turns out.
  • Nithron #23 4 years ago

Wait, this can't be an RPG. There aren't any goblins.
  • Fayt #24 4 years ago

I'm very interested in seeing how this turns out, and am very much intrigued by the meshing of RPG and spy themes.
  • Paleface #25 4 years ago

Could be interesting, if they get the combat right; I'm sure they'll get the conversation right.

And, given the camera effects and facial work, surely this is based on the Mass Effect engine, right? Or have Obsidian distanced themselves further from Bioware?
  • mkreku #26 4 years ago

Mass Effect used Unreal Engine 3. So does Alpha Protocol. But just because they licensed the same third party middleware doesn't mean they're still connected.

That's more an excuse for penalty fines/clauses in contracts, though, not for the publishers pusing out a clearly unfinished game.

If an author has only written three quarters of a book, then it doesn't get published regardless, does it?
  • Inigo #28 4 years ago

I'm looking forward to this (though not as much as there Aliens RPG, and NWN2 ex). It does have that UE look to it.
