Alone in the Dark PS3 due in autumn News

PlayStation 3 PC PlayStation 2 Xbox 360 Wii
News by Robert Purchese

15 April, 2008

Atari has told Eurogamer Germany that the PS3 version of Alone in the Dark is down for an autumn release.

Developer Eden Studios won't just be porting the Xbox 360 and PC versions. You can expect a specially adapted game, and possibly extra content in episodic form.

Eden also said an Xbox 360 demo will be ready for release before the game, with a bit of luck.

Alone in the Dark is due out for Xbox 360, PC, PS2 and Wii on 20th June.

Pop over to Eurogamer Germany for the entire preview, or head to our Alone in the Dark gamepage for some English-language coverage.

Atari UK has been contacted for comment.

Really looking forward to this game, the combat sounds fantastic and I'm yet to read/hear anything negative about it.

So as they have had to delay the PS3 version they are going to have add extra content to keep the fanboyz at bay.

Wanna hear something negative about it?

the PS3 version won't be out until november! That's pretty negative in my book!
And yes, I'm also a 360 owner, but really creepy games and hardware noise don't mix.

Some of you have really sensitive ears. I have a 1st generation 360 and, while I won't claim it's silent, the noise certainly hasn't "gotten in the way" of me enjoying my gaming experience - and I keep the console no more than a few feet from where I'm sitting.

Unless it's just an overblown fanboy thing?

ronuds, I have to agree, unless you have a habit of playing games with barely audible sound emitting from your TV, the 360's noise doesn't really interfere with actual game playing.
Saying that, I have a surround sound system that can make your ears bleed, so I wouldn't be able to hear a nuclear armageddon kicking off outside my front door.

Well, that's what I figured...just something to complain about whether valid or not.

I also have a 360 Elite with Falcon MB and Benq drive ... and in my experience the noise is barely audible, expecially compared to my original Premium. Just goes to show I suppose. Noise as an irritant is in the ear of the beholder.

Could be just my ears though. My next door neighbour has one of those ultrasonic anti-pest devices outside his house. My kids complain about the noise from it every time we go to the car, but I simply cannot hear it. A function of progressing age, I guess ;-)

Yes, very believable...for someone who has no experience with one console or the other - but good try. I've used both, so I know that you're greatly exaggerating.

In fact, after hearing so much about how loud the 360 was, I have been very surprised to experience that the PS3 is far from silent. Not as loud as the 360, but if you're that bothered by the 360's noise level, I'd assume the PS3 ain't exactly doing it for you either.

It hasn't been announced yet (to my knowledge) whether you'll need to pay for the DLC, but everyone's assuming so.

I must admit, I have permanent hearing damage (faint whistle one side, sea kinda noise the other)
So yes, I am very sensitive when it comes to audio.

360 is the console of a software developer, PS3 is the console of a hardware developer. And it shows.

The reason your PS3 is so silent is because the Bluray drive only reads at one speed. That means it doesnt spin (or load) very quickly. Also add to this the fact that the fans in the 360 are actually doing their job rather than letting the console sit in a cocoon of dust (PS3, anybody?) and you'll understand why the 360 is louder than the PS3.

But as has already been said. the 360 is nowhere near as loud as you or any other anti-360 fanboy make out. Grow up, seriously. You read yet another post about the PS3 getting the short end of the stick launch-wise, and you gotta mouth off about the 360. It got old about a month after the PS3 came out, get over it.

Nobody cares about episodic content, righ? I heard on EG.

fox: to each is own, I guess, but "nice and quiet times"? are you playing video-games or reading a book? Anyway, I like to appreciate of the sound the games properly doesn't have anything to do with anything else. But then again, I don't live with my parents anymore, and fortunately living room is far enough from bedroom.

Fanboysms aside, you should try using a decent earphones, even with your "very quiet" PS3, because, a nice soundtrack is half a game.

I went through 3 360's in my time with it and by the third the noise did it for me. I'm a late night gamer like evil fox, and when the mrs is in bed and who ever else in house you can't have the volume bleeting out. My PC has 6 fans and the 360 drowned it out, it spoiled games from my point of view, specially serious games with a story you really want to pay attention to.

Had the PS3 for about 3 months now and my Sky+ box makes more noise with it's HDD.

On the game, It looks decent but around it's time of release there are plenty of games to keep me busy and I wouldn't have bought it anyway until I went through the big guns ie GTA4, MGS4/O.

I came from being an exclusively PC gamer so the Xbox noise is noticeable to me but I'm so used to it now from 15 years of PC noise I can tune it out. My trouble is that my enjoyment of PS3 games is slightly affected as I'm concentrating so hard on trying to hear a sound from it. (I have the non-Falcon Elite and a 40GB PS3).

Anyway, to get back on topic, this news causes me to hesitate. Alone in the Dark is a guaranteed purchase for me (unless universally slated, of course), but if the PS3 version ends up with more content and is quieter to boot I could well sway in that direction.

Earphones is a good thing to use if your playing silent scary games like Condemned or movielike games like Mass Effect. I dont think many people have problems with the noise in multiplayer games aside from the 14 year old american kid screaming in your headset.

I wonder in what way 'adapted'. I'm an Xbox 360 owner, so I hope this extra episodic content will make its way to my console. I'd happily swap the GTAIV entra content for it! That is as others have said, unless of course, Alone in the Dark is universally slated.

Hopefully it will be good though, as I'm really looking forwards to this game. Moreso than Grand Theft Auto IV.

I do agree about the Xbox 360s noise being a bit of a destraction during horror games, but I don't let it bother me all that much.

You shouldn't need headphones to appreciate a game's soundtrack, just a console that doesn't sound like a dyson vaccum cleaner.

Though it is a pity that the PS3 doesn't seem to allow general audio output through bluetooth headphones for when there's someone else in the house who doesn't want to hearn the zombie screams or airstrikes.

MrXBob "cocoon of dust"? "Xbox fans doing their job"? Arf. The only reason that my PS3 has dust on it is that it works for long enough for the dust to build up without getting sent back to the shop. It's nice of MS to clean your Xbox for you though (unless you have a Bungie signed one, of course). ;P

It doesn't per se (the single speed theoretically could be very high). It just means you will have less 'gear shifting' noises when revving the drive up or down and change in pitch is more noticeable than a sound at a constant pitch.

I've noticed my PS3 getting quieter and quieter with software revisions over time... but I still think its quite loud. Just wouldn't want to be dealing with anything louder than that!

What is the bottom line on bluray transfer? There are less speeds, but the data transferrable per speed is greater is it not?

I never said it wakes people up, I said that with it being late at night I can't have the volume high, as a result my fairy feathered friend you find the volume competing with the 360's fan. Yes you can get use headphones, But being a PC gamer for the best part of my life I like the consoles for the fact I can kick back on a sofa 8 feet away from the tele and have some fun.

On the PS3's noise, I haven't had any problems but I recently did the "fan-test" and noticed a slight improvement but with it not being loud anyway it's hard to tell, When the fans do power up to clean the console it does remind you of what it's like to play on the 360 though.

Wow, another piece of PR crap... Since they're not saying that this "possible episodic content" would be exclusive, I wouldn't get my hopes to high. Exclusive DLC will come in the form of one big 5gb install file and that will be it.
