Alan Wake opening played, filmed

Nearing the Finnish?

A collection of new Alan Wake videos have appeared showing the opening section of the spooky thriller.

The footage, shown on GameTrailers TV (thanks vg247), follows Alan out of a cabin and into a village at night, where trees topple, people are brutally murdered and mysterious shadows lurk.

The demonstration explores numerous confrontations with this unknown menace as Wake pursues the manuscript he believes is coming to life right before his eyes.

A second batch of videos is based around a police chase, where Wake has been perceived as a threat and is on the run. The light-based combat mechanic is reversed, as Alan tries to stay wrapped in shadow while the police use flares and flashlights to expose him.

Alan Wake is due out in spring 2010. Our gamepage below has mountains of coverage.

    "Nearing the Finnish?"

    Ouch.

Guys, c'mon, please, ease up on the puns.

So it's getting confused. First you need a torch and flares to survive and then suddenly you need to hide in the shadows. So obvious plot flaw here but, why the heck doesnt the creature simply kill you while you are hiding?

    > North
It's pitch black in that direction.
    > North
Are you sure. I think I hear a Grue.
    > Go North
You stumble blindly through the dark until you are eaten by a Grue. I told you I heard one!

    It looks amazing...

I'm going to be so devastated if this turns out to be rubbish. The Xbox 360 desperately needs some decent, atmospheric horror games.

    Silent Hill??? *rolls eyes*
  • Lunatic4ever #11 2 years ago

its not really new footage all the way through but nevertheless really good.
the chasing level in the woods is by far one of the coolest thins ive seen in many years of gamehistory.
let us all look forward to the day this precious game is released :D

You're not just on the run from the darkness and the creature isn't omnipresent.

Looks technically very impressive, but honestly the script and voice acting seem really poor.
  • Widge #14 2 years ago

I heartily encourage any game that features nice atmospheric fog.
  • kendoji #15 2 years ago

I hope this will be good. Won't watch any more videos though, to avoid spoilers. When it's released I'll just check a couple review scores, and if it hasn't bombed I'll buy it.

    Dear Eurogamer,

your puns make my soul hurt.

    @GreyBeard

    From a videogame? *shock*

I'm going against the grain. Puns ftw! Keep up the pun-liners, they're puntastic.

    /sees torch-carrying mob in distance....

Loving the puns as well. This one was particularly nice, since I'm from Finland ;)

I thought the PC version had not been officially confirmed...? If so then why is there a ShopTo.net advert for Alan Wake on the PC?!? :?

I would love this game for the PC rather than the 360 personally as the 360 build I've seen looked excellent in every respect except for the excess of screen tearing which instantly put me off that version. I hope that has been fixed in the final game because I've a feeling the PC version will be ages away.

Ah... the Games for Windows LIVE cover in the ShopTo.net advert has now been replaced by the Xbox 360 one.

This was/is a 360/pc game but last year MS decided to focus on getting the 360 version out the door. I don't doubt however that the pc version will soon follow. It's just too easy to port between the pc and 360 and up till then they where massively pushing the pc version (remember how the game was used to promote the quad cores?).

Yeah ive watched those videos. Absolutely stunning. I was over the hype and all the wait for thisgame but when i watched those ( specially the forest running part ) the game looks SO detailed and has to be by far the most deatiled and best atmospheric, "horor" games ever. I officially got hyped about it. I rarely find a game thats "scary" and good and why always expect a Silent Hill or something. THIS looks more than capable to be my all time favorite from the genre. ( i love movies of the kind too but i laugh more than get into it, if the movie isnt perfect.. ) I really cant get over the detail and how it looks in the forest even if the uploaded video are of bad quality. Talking about the specific ones shown in GT. They have been there for a few days now )

OH HAI ALAN! THANKS FOR EXPLAINING THE PLOT FOR ME!
  • zisssou #25 2 years ago

Gameplay reminds me of Alone in the Dark... but I'm pretty sure this will deliver more
  • frankfurter209 #26 2 years ago

Please be amazing. I loved Max Payne so much
  • Bulbatron #27 2 years ago

Please don't be such a big disappointment as Alone in the Dark was.
  • Razorus #28 2 years ago

My excitement for this game has been rekindled of late; I was so busy focusing on Modern Warfare 2 and Assassins Creed 2 that I forgot about Mass Effect 2 and this little gem.
And quite honestly, dark forests at night, for me, are the scariest settings in horror fiction. Apart from basements *flashback to Condemned*
  • Bulbatron #29 2 years ago

It certainly is looking very atmospheric. I would be quite interested to see some of the 'during the day' stuff, to see if the pacing contrasts at all with these nighttime settings.

"I still want this.. for my PC. "

    Me too.

Must have taken a bunch of very special people to vote you down for this.

Looks good, definite buy. 360 hardware is struggling in some of those scenes though. Shame I don't have and can't be assed to get a high end gaming PC.
