Age of Conan expansion dated

Rise of the Godslayer out next month.

Funcom has revealed that Rise of the Godslayer, the first expansion for its Age of Conan MMO, will be released on 11th May.

The news was broken by MMO Examiner. Although Funcom has yet to issue a press release formally announcing the date, a spokesman confirmed to Eurogamer that it was genuine.

The expansion will be available as a digital download direct from Funcom, or bundled with original game Age of Conan: Hyborian Adeventures in a boxed release published by Deep Silver.

Rise of the Godslayer eschews the traditional route of a raised level cap in favour of an alternate advancement system that will allow high-level players more customisation as they explore the new, Asian-themed lands of Khitai. There will be heavily faction-based questing to be had, and you'll be able to train wolves and tigers into mounts or fighting companions.

Plenty of info available at the Rise of the Godslayer gamepage.

The expansion must give AOC a huge boost, because that's what the game really needs.

I think I'll give this a try. I still have a boxed copy with an unused 30 day code for the original.

Oddly I tried a beta of Conan and it worked really well. I then bought it sometime later when I had a DX10 card and it just crashed and had horrible graphical bugs and never looked at it again. I love the Conan universe though and thought this game had promise so may go back to it with this add-on and see what treasure awaits me!

"will allow high-level players more customisation as they explore the new, Asian-themed lands of Khitai."

    hmm. sounds good.
Except for the whole having to play through the rest of the shit game to get to that content.
It's like having someone sprinkle a layer of Fertiliser on top of your Icecream and have them assure your that its really tasty towards the bottom...

My brother-in-law plays this seriously. He's in a top raiding guild, really enjoys it. When he talks about the guild vs guild PvP battles they have I get quite jealous. He's been playing the beta for the expansion and loves that too.

The expansion focuses quite a lot on changing some of the mid-levelling too for those who think that was shit.

He's a pretty savvy gamer so I don't think AoC can be that bad these days. I am sure there are tens of thousands more just like him so good luck to them I say. Nice to have a bit of variety in the MMO space.

If I wasn't stuck on some fascist internet connection I'd love to give this another go. I was gutted when I couldn't use my free week a few months back.

I believe you can create a new asian character and they get dropped in the new zones when you've finished Tortage so don't need to be that high level to see the new stuff

I could have enjoyed Age of Conan, if it wasn't for the fact that it took so long to get around the place. I mean, I know you want to create a believable epic world and all that, and for that reason you can't let people teleport and stuff, but since the world is never gonna be that believable anyway, couldn't you at least bend the rules enough for us to have fun? As much as AoC tried to profile itself as a single player MMO, it was always most fun with other players, and then especially in instances. But as long as it takes half as much time to get to the instance as it takes to actually run it, people won't play them. And that's a shame.

Macdory, it's changed A LOT since those days - it is now the game we all wanted/expected it to be, and a bit more besides.
  • Macdory #12 2 years ago

@Atropos it's a shame they rushed teh release in that case ... just shows that a bugged release can doom a game
  • skullstorm #13 2 years ago

    Doomed? Interesting.

After 2 years of being 'doomed', there doesnt really seem to be an end in sight for the game. Given the (boxed) expansion pack, almost constant bug fixes, content updates, steady subscriptions and generally increased positivity for the game and its new producer I don't really think it's as doomed as some chipped shoulders make out.

It may have improved but after playing at launch and seeing the really poor effort they put into the game i just cannot ever see myself returning, and i would think alot of people feel the same.

If you cant get the launch right your never going to attract new people because word of mouth is always more powerful than advertiseing.
  • skullstorm #15 2 years ago

It's pretty silly to say never. They have attracted new people and they have also attracted returnees. Just because you aren't interested doesn't mean others won't be. Some will like the game, some will hate it. At least trying the game as it is now would justify whatever opinion they might have.

Yes the launch was catastrophic and chipped many shoulders, thats undeniable. But it has been 2 years now (thats also 2 years of doomsaying and still no doom) and the myriad improvements and the effort from the devs in getting the game back on track genuinely warrants giving it a second look even if you still end up loathing it.

Minus the positive comments all you like, the game will still be up and running for quite some time to come regardless.

I thought that read: "Age of Conan expiry dated".

Wouldn't have surprised me in the least.
