Age of Conan adds Ymir's Pass zone
Loads of new content for level 50 plus.
Well, OK, colour us impressed. Just two weeks after completing an overhaul of player-versus-player combat and crafting systems, Funcom has added a substantial content update to its troubled fantasy MMO, Age of Conan.
The new outdoor zone of Ymir's Pass is the biggest content update to the game since launch. It features plenty of questing, a large, mountainous area to explore, and a new dungeon, all aimed at players over level 50. Levels 50 to 60 were previously felt to be a problematic gap in Age of Conan's content.
We've added some screenshots of Ymir's Pass to our Age of Conan gallery, so take a look. We'll have video for you soon, too.
According to the press release, the Amphitheater dungeon " holds one of the most epic and memorable monster encounters ever created for the game". We think this is the Frostfather, an ice giant familiar to students of Conan lore.
Seems as though new game director Craig Morrison is licking his team into shape - and he's not about rest on his laurels.
"In the months ahead we will introduce even more new content, and coming up soon are two exciting new high-level dungeons intended for players who have reached the maximum level," he said.
"At this stage adding more content and keeping people entertained is very important to us," he added. It's important to us too, Craig. There's more info on what's coming in our report on Funcom's Leipzig presentation of the game.
Here's hoping all this hard work can do something about the game's dwindling server populations.
We'll be looking at Age of Conan's PVP in detail soon. In the meantime, find more articles - including an invterview with Morrisson, and a recent re-review - on the Age of Conan gamepage.

As for lore, sadly there is very little in the way of lore in RE Howard's works. Yes he invented a highly detailed world for Conan to wander through and not much more in the way of characters other than Conan himself.
Those chaacters which Howard did infuse with passion, were typically evil types who met their grisly end at Conan's hand shortly after being introduced to Hyboria.
The Frost Giant's Daughter which has inspired Ymir's Pass is an extremely short story of Howards adding little in the way of characters to his world, still, beggars can't be choosers.

It took a wee while to gather up six players to take out a boss in Ymir's Pass the other night, but they were dedicated and that's the main thing.

Too right. I'm very pissed off that Funcom sold me a game that didn't do what it was supposed to and I'm 80-odd quid (including subs) down because of that. The problem was it's not that the game didn't live-up to expectations or wasn't to my taste. The reason why I - and many other gamers are pissed off - is that they outright LIED to us about the game's content. Go pick up an AoC box next time you're in a games store and look at that box: it's covered in false information. Not hype or marketing spiel. Outright falsehoods.
In any other industry, if I bought something that wasn't fit for purpose (as AoC wasn't) I'd be entitled to my money back. So where's my refund?
So yeah, a lot of people are pissed off at Funcom and with every right.
But what will now happen is a couple of Funcom employees will now chip-in and point out how wrong those of us complaining are and we can't "judge the game now." I don't need to "judge the game now" to know that Funcom are a pack of shitbags who sold a game under false pretenses but who now claim everything's hunky-dory.
If you haven't had the misfortune to have this bloated piece of shit on your PC, then I'll warn you now: do not make the same mistake a lot of us made and believe that Funcom are capable of delivering a fun, playable game or that AoC in any way represents good value for money.
Save your time, money and effort, as there are free-to-play MMOs that are more polished and professional than this pile of piss.

totally agree.

i bought the game at launch and played for 2 months. The only reason i quit was because post-20 the game wasn't as polished as those first 20 levels. I really liked the game and i really liked the world, but the instant cut after level 20 was just too jarring to ignore. Even so i battled my way to 30 before i called it a day...
ill have to look at the box when i go home

And in an earlier thread on oct 15'th (re-review one ) had this to say :
"1. I've been playing games for over 27 years.
2. I'm a professional game designer and have been for over 15 years.
3. I've been playing MMOs since EQ's earliest days and have played most of the major titles along the way. INCLUDING Age of Conan.
4. I don't play WoW and haven't for close to a year.
5. During my time in WoW, I didn't do any guild raiding or similar.
6. For the record, my "Guild Officer" was female.
7. To say AoC is a good example of the way MMOs should be done is a ridiculous statement. Instancing your non-raid zones was a bad idea in SWG. It still is. And hard zone lines? Yeah, that's really pushing the boundaries.
8. AoC is an unplayable mess, a complete abortion of a game that offers nothing in terms of content, is shallow, is a retrogressive step in MMO development and is a very simple arcade-action game dressed up with a few stats.
9. Tits and blood do not make for mature content unless you're 10 years old.
10. You're clearly unable to even understand my point, so I suggest you go back to grinding Ymir or trying to convince "female" players to take off their tops for you."
You are so busted .... A "proffessional" game designer for 15 years crying his heart out over 80£ spend on a game because the box promised more than he got at launch?
If you were a game designer you of all would know that a MMO will change over time. Usually says so on the box somewhere aswell.
Only people without jobs (read teens attending school) would go to your lengths in forums if not satisfied with a game they bought. Grown ups with jobs and cash to spend would just play until bored and then leave when not entertained. They would never go on a personal vendetta over 80£.
Here is my opinion about you. Age about 17. Own an old computer used mainly to play WOW. Bought AOC with your life savings.
Computer could'nt run the game, game crashed left and right because of the memory leaks (OOM'S fixed ahwile ago by the way),felt cheated out of your hard earned saved up allowence. And still after 6 month's haven't gotten back on top financially, hence the anger....
Just a theory, but i kinda think it's close enough......
Your credabillity just went from low to superlow.
If people want real opinions from people that actually play the game go to the official forums. Some praise and others give harsh critisim there, but atleast it's balanced and you get different opinions. Not like the onesided eurogamer forums. Here close to everyone appear to hate the one game they arn't playing....
Which is why i bother to write this even though i dont' own the game myself and still havent played it.
And no i'm not a funcom employee. I work with golf. The real game not the virtual one
To most of the guys writing about AOC. The game yo bought at launch has changed alot since you quit level 30 ish. Quests added and fixed, performance fixed for the wast majorit, huge number of bugs fixed. Sieging ,raiding and dungeons rewamped and mostly fixed.
New pvp and crafting system added. New big playzone added.
Som maybe it's time to let go of the past and enter the present?

As I've said time and time again, until you've PLAYED AoC you can't comment.
My point's been made. Accept it, ignore it, whatever, as I've got far better things to do with my time than try to explain it to you. Those of us who HAVE played AoC see it for what it is. Why don't you go give it a try? Oh, that's right - unlike MY PC, YOUR PC can't play it...
I'd continue but you've done a better job of showing up how foolish you are than I ever could...

You trash the game right and left after only seeing a little bit of what it has to offer. You quit according to yourself at level 30 something a few months ago. You have no experience of what the game is like right now.
Granted you have played some and i have not.
However i base my posts on the experience of existing players that made it all the way to level 80 and are still playing. What they have to say about the game in the official forums gives a balanced view about the current state of AOC. Those views include their reactions to every patch ,gameplay tweak and content that has been added.
They give the real cons and pros of AOC, the good and bad.
The only on beeing foolish here is you. Writing page up and down about how bad the game is in it's present state based upon your experience up to level 30 something. Why ? Because you the so called "15 years of gamedeveloper experience man" got upset because an MMO didn't have every feature talked about up and running at launch and was cheated out of your 80£.
A man with 15 years of gamedevelopment experience would know this going in.
So your credibility is non exsistent. You are either a crazed fanboy teen of any other( insert ............. MMO), or you work for one of them doing som viral marketing.
As for my own credibillity, i have not played the game so i have absolutely no personal experience with AOC. I only use official news (patchnotes) and refer to the players reactions about them.
Why do i bother? Basically i'm sick and tired of reading posts from guys like you. People that lie and manipulate instead of using arguments.
The day you start using arguments and are willing to have a meaningfull discussion, is the day i stop commenting on on your posts.
Problem for you is that as soon as you do that you will only make yourself look bad since all your gripes up to level 30 have been fixed already by FUNCOM.
