AfterBurner Climax PSN/XBLA confirmed
Revival of arcade revival this spring.
SEGA has finally confirmed that it will release AfterBurner Climax on PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade this spring.
AfterBurner Climax revived SEGA's eighties jet-fighting classic for the arcade in 2006, in much the same way as OutRun 2 had done for the evergreen racer. Unlike that game, however, Climax has not yet made its way into the home.
However, an XBLA and PSN conversion was suggested by both common sense and an Australian Ratings Board classification last year. The game was recently confirmed for release in Japan, and an ESRB rating earlier today promted SEGA's US and European arms into confirming the news.
They made up for the wait by posting a frankly dazzling trailer on YouTube, bless them.

That said, since the RingWide is the less powerful of the two new platforms, and still PC-based, it should be pretty easy to port it to PSN or XBLA. Probably easier than the Model 2 version. I'm betting on it, that it will eventually come.

Nailed it with Bayo and now Afterburner?
It's looking like pure arcade heaven, I sense another Outrun success style story.

Now do Daytona.

No?
I'll have a go at writing it then.
Daytona HD/Sega Racing Classic has nice bright orange bits on its cabinet. I thought they looked good. There was also a stand that sold brightly coloured carpets.
Er, that's it. The most exciting arcade development is something that can already be experienced at home via emulator, if you have a gaudy carpet and an orange chair.
I am excited about After Burner Climax, and will be buying it on day one of release. But the home port pretty much marks the end of an era. If arcades were anything like how they used to be, they would be where we would go to be playing stereoscopic games that fill your field of vision using high contrast screens, and the visuals would be raytraced with a dozen quad-core processors inside each unit. Home equivalents would look like a stuttering, flat, blocky mess by comparison.
Sigh.
