Activision unveils GH: Warriors of Rock

Fantasy! New peripheral! Quickplay+!

The rumours were right; Activision has unveiled Guitar Hero 6 as Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock. The game's due out this autumn.

Headline features are an "all-new, story-driven Quest Mode" narrated by KISS front man Gene Simmons; a redesigned, "rock-inspired" controller; the biggest on-disc selection of rock music so far and a "Quickplay+" mode.

Quest mode has turned to the fantastical, as eight new characters and a Demi-God of Rock go from New York digs to molten lava fields to battle against The Beast and save rock and roll. Ridiculous powers can be unlocked on the way, and a new art style has been employed.

Quickplay+ mode provides 13 quick-fire challenges for every song - even the old, imported ones. These challenges range from band streaks to high scores and to power challenges, where campaign characters use unlocked abilities to reach impossible scores.

Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock features over 90 songs from bands like DragonForce, Megadeth, Black Sabbath, Slipknot, Queen, Muse and Kiss. The first announced songs are listed below.

The new controller reflects the game's new art style and has been made specifically for "shredding".

Neversoft's making the game for PS3 and 360 while Vicarious Visions develops for Wii.

  • AFI - "Dancing Through Sunday"
  • Avenged Sevenfold - "Bat Country"
  • Black Sabbath - "Children Of The Grave"
  • Buzzcocks - "What Do I Get?"
  • Children Of Bodom - "If You Want Peace... Prepare For War"
  • The Cure - "Fascination Street"
  • Def Leppard - "Pour Some Sugar On Me (Live)"
  • Dethklok - "Bloodlines"
  • DragonForce - "Fury of the Storm"
  • Drowning Pool - "Bodies"
  • Foo Fighters - "No Way Back"
  • Foreigner - "Feels Like The First Time"
  • Jane's Addiction - "Been Caught Stealing"
  • KISS - "Love Gun"
  • Megadeth - "Sudden Death"
  • Metallica & Ozzy Osbourne - "Paranoid (Live)"
  • Muse - "Uprising"
  • My Chemical Romance - "I'm Not Okay (I Promise)"
  • Queen - "Bohemian Rhapsody"
  • Rammstein - "Waidmanns Heil"
  • The Rolling Stones - "Stray Cat Blues"
  • Silversun Pickups - "There's No Secrets This Year"
  • Slayer - "Chemical Warfare"
  • ZZ Top - "Sharp Dressed Man (Live)"

Sounds like a spot of shark-jumping has been going on. Although, I wouldn't mind some of those tracks on Rock Band.

Awesome! I didn't already have enough pieces of plastic tat hanging around
  • sonicyoda #7 2 years ago

Great list of bands but what an odd choice of tracks! Surely they could have chosen more well known Rammstein and Sabbath songs?

Also, I greatly disagree with the labelling of Drowning Pool and AFI as Guitar Heroes. For shame Neversoft.

I like the idea of the quest thing but then be on the other side of the fence untill I know more.

If Bobby Kotick was a policeman, he'd be Cuntstable.

That track list so far is a big fat pile of meh!

Apart from Bohemian Rhapsody and Children of the grave.
  • Evolution #15 2 years ago

Oh great, they FINALLY put in a song from The Cure.
  • FaceInTheCrowd #16 2 years ago

    @sonicyoda

Mate 'Children of the Grave' is on of Sabbaths best songs, this track along with Chemical Warfare has got me very intrested in GH again
  • sonicyoda #17 2 years ago

    @FaceInTheCrowd

I didn't say it wasn't one of their best, just not the most obvious choice. Even Chemical Warfare (which I love) is certainly a more obscure Slayer track from their past. I just feel that if Activision are going to keep interest in this series alive, I thought they'd choose more well-known songs.
  • wizlon #18 2 years ago

    Yeah, I'll be buying this!
  • BigJonno #19 2 years ago

The direction that this game is taking is highly ironic, considering Activision's dumping of Brutal Legend. Liking the song list so far, though. Seems like fun stuff.
  • OllyJ #20 2 years ago

So is it "just" guitar then?

    Also MESHUGGAH PLEASE!!!!!
  • Goodfella #21 2 years ago

    @sonicyoda

What more well known songs? I think about the only song that's 'well known' is Paranoid. As a Sabbath fan myself I'd love the entire Sabbath Bloody Sabbath album. Personally I'd just prefer Rock Band: Black Sabbath, or preferably Rock Band: Led Zeppelin.
  • LondonSquare82 #22 2 years ago

You know what I can see coming next? Guitar Hero: Songs from Glee. It would be a match made in product saturation heaven.
  • buggrit #23 2 years ago

    @sonicyoda
Only somebody that can't play the guitar properly would write-off Jade Puget from AFI - shit-hot player.
Drowning Pool I'll give you though, absolute toss.
  • Xnoybis Verified Senior Software Engineer, Holition #24 2 years ago

Black Sabbath - "Children Of The Grave"
    Dethklok - "Bloodlines"

Goddammit, I really didn't want to have to buy this......
  • mechamonkey #25 2 years ago

    Massive meh.

Actually I'd really enjoy a totally OTT guitar hero: Brutal Legend. The soundtrack was absolutely incredible. Actually I really enjoyed all of it \o/

I'd love a Zeppelin or Sabbath game, likely not to happen in Zep's case anyway.

I thought the guitar hero fad was over now?
  • Shrike #27 2 years ago

The new peripheral is a plastic barrel with a touch-sensitive bottom that you have to scrape in time with the dwindling relevance of your franchise.
  • Eraysor #28 2 years ago

Gah, I've either played these songs before or I dislike them. Sudden Death could be good though.

Nope, the news is clearly talking about a redesigned guitar controller.
They say it will "reflect the game's new art style", so I'm betting on an axe-shaped guitar. Just a cosmetic redesign, no hardware improvements.

Of all the Muse songs to pick for a Guitar Hero game, they pick Uprising. A great and catchy song, but with no real or interesting guitar riffs. What about MK Ultra or Unnatural Selecton.
  • Mosphaiti #31 2 years ago

    Shite song list.
  • FortysixterUK #32 2 years ago

Dammit...once again only a handfull of tracks actually appeal......I think they should go with the band themed ones, and put more of their catalogue into each release than they have done recently. GH aerosmith & metallica etc have missed some glorious opportunites. Of course, then it wouldn't be rockband and instead it would be Guitar Hero.....

Anyway, a dedicated Kiss one please Mr developer, with ONLY kiss songs on it. I'll give you the track listing.

Then a Led Zep one, A Sabbath one, and a Deep Purple/Rainbow one, and a Korn one, and a Black Crowes one, and a Bon Jovi one, and a GnR one,and a 60/70s themed one for artists who did iconic music, but not iconic albums ( Hendrix, Cream, most of the UK 60s chart rock etc etc ).
  • TheBlackBandit #33 2 years ago

Brutal Legend. Brutal Legend. And again I say Brutal Legend.
  • alcides #34 2 years ago

Has someone stated the obvious fact they are probably trying to rip off brutal legends yet?
  • JahB #35 2 years ago

god damn you. i don't want to support activision, i don't wanna buy any more plasticky band game nonsense, but...

SLAYER. how can one say no to a game that includes slayer?
  • Skurmedel #36 2 years ago

Some good music in there, although I don't know how you shred to The Rolling Stones.
  • AnsemsApprentice #37 2 years ago

Give me some more Mastodon, Rush, Smashing Pumpkins, Racer X. I'm sick of songs with no variety on GH. And "Uprising" seriously? Citizen Erased would have been much more appealing... I'm still buying it I mean, I love Guitar Hero but come on. There are quite a few really difficult songs on the list, always a good thing. Quest mode sounds genuinely intriguing. It sounds better than Guitar Hero 5 at least.

    Technical Difficulties by Racer X
    Comfortably Numb by Pink Floyd
    Nottingham Lace by Buckethead
Canon in D by That Youtube Guy

    Cmon!
