Activision confirms new DJ Hero game

Begins campaign for "undiscovered" talent.

Activision's confirmed "a future instalment" in the DJ Hero series, but stopped short of adding a number two to the name.

"Do you want your song mashed up in the next DJ Hero?" Activision asked musicians attending the huge MIDEM music show in Cannes, France later this month.

Those that do will have their submissions judged at a Listening Session at MIDEM on 27th January - "providing one lucky undiscovered musician the priceless opportunity to have their winning song mixed, mastered and featured in a future instalment of DJ Hero".

Activision didn't add anything more when contacted this afternoon.

French DJ David Guetta outed a new DJ Hero game earlier this month when he told the world he was working on "the number two version".

DJ Hero debuted last October, spinning into living rooms with a turntable peripheral and hefty £100 price tag.

Head over to our DJ Hero review to see what we thought.

Activision making a music game sequel? Colour me surprised...
  • VicViper #2 2 years ago

Goddammit Activision, wait a bit, give it time to settle and put out the DLC you were touting when you were releasing the first installment. You see over there? that digital store with all the tracks and the rock band title? yes that copy that and youll be better off. God help you if you try to sell me another over priced controller, music game fans have limits too.
  • LiveForever #3 2 years ago

It will probably also include a new updated turntable controller.

I'm a music game fan and I thought I had my limits. But then a week ago I caved and bought DJ Hero. I don't think I'm going to lie to myself in future. I'm completely addicted to peripherals.

As for a sequel, it would almost be offensive if they didn't release one where there is a whole new peripheral involved. That way it kind of spreads the cost over more than one game. No one complains that steering wheel controllers cost too much as they can be used in many driving games after all.

This is why I am done buying plastic instrument based games - I'll wager there'll be a newer, more expensive controller too, that has one marginally different feature. Also I argue that DJ's have any 'talent'.

Hey Acti, what about a new Tony hawk Ride?

    Sorry, too soon?
  • Scurrminator #7 2 years ago

but as with GH you only need one guitar, you dont HAVE to buy any updated new guitars, it's up to you.
For the first DJ Hero you NEEDED that turntable!

    @toothhall

oh don't get me wrong I bought DJ hero day it came out, if the new controller had two turn tables and was even closer to a real deck I'd buy that too (kinda like that japanese arcade dj game I seen in a youtube I believe someone posted in the comments of the review). The main gripe I have is that they keep saying they have all this DLC and then never really get up the steam on it it of course the only DLC I would like is Alive 2007... but that is hoping too much

I got DJ Hero for xmas and have really enjoyed it. I for one am glad they will make a sequal, it definately help justify the cost of the intial peripheral outlay.

As with any expensive peripherals (arcade sticks, wheels, lightguns, drums, guitars & dj decks), they can be easily worth the money, provided they are compatible with enough decent games.

The same will be true of both the PS motion controller & natal, when they launch.

Scurrminator, Toothball, VicViper and myiagros: I got a car I wanna sell you guys.
  • Eraysor #11 2 years ago

Good news for me, the original was great and I agree with Toothball in that it spreads the cost of the peripheral.
  • lordofthedunce #12 2 years ago

    @bratmandu

you want to sell them guys?
  • bratmandu #13 2 years ago

    Yea, three bob a pound.
  • VicViper #14 2 years ago

    @Bratmandu

I don't know, whats your future extra content plan like? and will this be a franchise?
Will I be able to by extra/upgraded tools for them whilst they work in the underground sugar mines?
All these robot overseers I bought from the last guy are going to waste.

Ha! Of course there was going to be a sequel announced. It is after all a new year!
DJ Hero, a fantastic game. Doesn't really need a new peripheral now though does it, not for a long time anyway.
Of course, with Acti's policy of having a new game every year I suppose they don't really have that much of a choice if they want it to sell.
lol really hope people wake up and smell the java soonish!

DJ Hero was amazing. It's a real shame that it didn't sell all that much, but I'm glad to see a sequel. :)
  • Scurrminator #17 2 years ago

It's nearly sold 2 million. That's pretty good I'd say for ten weeks on sale!

    Begins campaign for "undiscovered" money.
  • SimonM7 #19 2 years ago

Yeah, DJ Hero was/is great, but the base of it is really really barebones. You can't really do what needs to be done to it purely with DLC, as much as I think people wanna jump to that conclusion with little investigation.

The career progression, multiplayer options and frankly the structure of menus and the stars system needs to be re-done I reckon. The core gameplay is great, but it needs to be packaged better.
  • gaselite #20 2 years ago

    more dubstep please
  • spliffhead #21 2 years ago

If no one has taken the leap yet...

I got the first version on 360 from Amazon.de for £45, that's the price point it should be at ActBlizz.

Again this is why Harmonix is doing so well only 2 core games and 2 spinoffs and two sets of kit one a big imporvement over the other (and at least parts work with it's rival's games) and STILL a ton of DLC.. Activision are known for milking somthing to death, hell I'm surpised we havn't got a 'wow controler', oh wait we do that £70 mouse that actally broke the game first time out.

These music games are still quite fun and are still enjoyable to buy - just not Activision's versions.

awesome, awesome game. Just got 5 stars on Noisia.
  • miiiguel #24 2 years ago

I gave this game for xmas to a friend's couple kid, and it's amazing, and cute to see the insane amount of hours and true face of happiness of the kid. It probably helps the fact my friend is a dj and probably the kid wants to mimick his dad, but nevertheless, kudos for me, I got that present right.
  • bmxbandit #25 2 years ago

Urgh, for actual fans of the genres this game is trying to crack into ... it's an abortion.

Activision, you are the new EA in the worst way possible. Shape up.
  • Murton #26 2 years ago

If I was a betting man I'd say the smart money was always going to be on a quick sequel here. Activision aren't a stupid company, they know that a £100 game with a peripheral that can't be used for anything else was always going to be a hard sell, but release a second game that uses that peripheral and all of a sudden it becomes a little more viable. Also a sequel brings with it the feeling that this will become a support franchise meaning that the peripheral could potentially see as much use as the already popular Guitar Hero guitar among the right group of fans.

Of course like Guitar Hero the proof is going to be in the pudding, or rather the track list. Guitar Hero track lists have gotten weaker and weaker since GH3 (which was awesome) and it's pretty clear that track licenses are being bought by a comittee who think they're pleasing everyone but in reality are just annoying a lot of people who don't want to have to play through yet another soulless and uninspired track that just happened to do well in the singles chart on release. If the sequel can a track list that fans of the first be interested in or excited about then I can see the sales of this franchise following that of the early Guitar Hero games, if they follow the trend however and let it get weak, then this franchise will likely die before it really gets a chance to take off.
