Achievements coming to WOW?

So suggests Lich King alpha leak.

We wouldn't normally post details leaked from the alpha test for Wrath of the Lich King, the new World of Warcraft expansion - everything at this point is subject to change, anyway. However, this one is just too juicy to miss.

Screens posted by deathknight.info reveal that typing /achievements into the console brings up an all-new achievements interface, complete with some placeholder achievements which seem to have points values attached to them.

The system appears similar to the 'deeds' introduced by Lord of the Rings Online last year, and the Tome of Knowledge in the as yet unreleased Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning.

Achievements spotted include levelling characters to 80 on both Alliance and Horde factions, and completing a daily quest each day for five days.

"We haven't made any announcements regarding this type of system for the game, and we don't plan to comment on rumours," a Blizzard spokesperson told Eurogamer.

Before you get excited, note that the feature is not yet integrated with the front-end of the alpha version of the game, and may not make it into the expansion if Blizzard runs out of time, holds it back for a future patch, or simply decides against it.

However, it is an indication that the developer is aware that its closest competition has stolen a march on it with this popular feature, and is investigating ways to retrofit it to WOW. Our money says you'll hear more about this soon, possibly from Blizzard's World Wide Invitational fan convention in Paris later this month.

    No-one agreed to an NDA?

The deeds in LOTRO work really well and I'm not surprised that Blizzard is considering stealing them.

I can feel more of my life being sucked away with every WoW related announcement. I wish they would stop developing it for a while just so I could catch up with everyone else!

Do you get rewards for completing them? Apart from a pretty badge?
  • Pastici #4 4 years ago

How long has Guild Wars had titles? Pretty much the same thing.
  • locus2k1 #5 4 years ago

It is also used in Mythos :D
  • paulf #6 4 years ago

man - aint it addictive enough without introducing this :) still not sure it can tempt me back though

Deeds and titles are my main draw to LotRO, stick those in WoW and I'd come back. I kind of miss Azeroth in a weird, should-really-get-a-life way :p

Dont underestimate the power of pretty badges with numbers next to them. They can make some people crazy. Ive seen some really scary cases of gamerscore addiction.

One of my friends refuses to play anything unless there's some sort of gamerscore associated with it. The nutter.

a pretty badge is a big a reward as any in an mmo

Blizz were going to implement a timed 'reward' (badges of justice, gems, potions etc) system for achieving certain things in The Burning Crusade, but it got dropped along the way because they felt it would force people to rush through the expansion.

So a tweaked version of this, possibly without the timed element, could be a refreshing addition to the game.

I know they are only placeholders, but one of them is to level two characters to 80, which would imply the achievements aren't linked to any one character, but your account as a whole. So Im not sure it will result in in-game benefits.

As if there wasn't enough to e-peen wave about in the game already!

As has been said - if they take a page out of LoTRO's book and link them to exploration, number of quests completed, times a skill has been used etc then great. However, if they link them to number of 25 man raids you've successfully completed, how many epics you have etc then its just going to lead to a lot of (quite possibly justified) whining from those who can't/won't achieve these things.

All the more so if bonuses are given for obtaining any of the achievements (and if they aren't, what is the point?!)

Interesting that they call it achievements though, and not something else. Maybe, just maybe, MS won the bidding war to get WoW onto the 360?
  • stoopidgreg #15 4 years ago

in other news, crack cocain has become even stronger

Considering the fact Blizzard have said numerous times they won't be doing a console conversation of WoW, simply because the engine wouldn't port over onto a console terribly well, I highly doubt that.

Oh yeah, I can see these. I think that these would add a lot to the game - the exploration deeds in LOTRO are excellent - but without an actual reward - the traits you get in LOTRO are awesome - they're a lot less attractive. And knowing Blizzards bias towards raiding guilds I doubt they'll be too accessible/achievable.

Unfortunately, the first thing that came to mind was "LAWL L2P NUBS - Wipe against the same boss for the 1000th time."

They have a whole lot of problems to fix in Lich King, I dearly hope that the inevitable shite load of end level raids are a bit more accessible this time.

Actually, I don't really care anymore, I just remembered that I don't play anymore. as the grinding halt my guild came to while trying to build numbers & equip people for raiding finished me. Karazhan again? *Splotch* Agh, sorry I can't, I accidentally stabbed myself in the eyes.

Ripped off from Mythos. Getting some new ideas of their own for their own expansions wouldn't be a bad idea, instead of the same old, same old tripe they keep releasing.
  • Transcendent #19 4 years ago

Why can't they focus on the fun, instead of on the grind?
  • Bluetribe #20 4 years ago

Why this is considered news worthy boggles me.
