I noticed achievement points when I logged back on a week ago. These used for anything?

Not only is the Armory slow, but it frequently breaks and refuses to give you anything for hours.

Still, it's a very nice thing to use to look up other players and things like that.

the 50 pets achievement gives a pet skunk called Stinky!

All are sorted into "groups" like "Explore Outland" with each zone explored having its own achievement.
Often if a "group" is completely done you either get a title like "Seeker" or "Ambassador" etc. ("Chef" for all cooking).
Additionally some reward unique tabards or pets or even mounts (an Albino drake).

They are mainly for show however it's quite nice the way it's done:
1. You get a "bing" like when you leveled and the achievement is fading in
2. It's show for people standing around that player. -> Dingo75 achieved [Lots of Fish] (fishing 100 fish or something)
3. It's announced in guild channel
4. It's announced realm wide if it's server first boss kill, 80 of a class / race or maxing a profession -> [Realm First] Dingo75 achieved [some boss kill]

Due to 4. boss races will be even fiercer than before because everyone can see who was / is server first now even on the opposite side (Ally / Horde).
